Watch your head, unless you're as short as I am. We were on the CIE Scots Irish tour. We somehow got a table directly next to the band and had a wonderful time, let folks come and sit with us, got Guinness with Blackcurrant (which depending on who you ask is WRONG ... I thought it was fun). We had a BBQ buffet dinner that was good with plenty of food. They let us take home our placemats which are maps of Ireland. Also, there was a gift shop with some lovely items that came home with us, as well.

This pub has been standing since the 17th Century, they know a thing or two about hospitality. Our party of five made ourselves cozy in the sessions corner as the pub keeper offered to light a peat moss fire for our comfort. They sell tee-shirts and tourist patronize this place, on account of it being a very old, beautiful Irish pub, but there were a few locals enjoying a pint when we stopped in. One of the owners is American, and I was surprised to see JFK Memorabilia in the smaller room. They have antique oil lamps, old firearms and assorted things on display for patrons to muse. They proudly serve Bushmills and even their own brand of Crosskeys Whisky, but I got a gin and tonic and enjoyed the Northern Irish craic that was on full supply on this June day.

The tables by the entrance are the best but don't be fooled by the small appearance its like Dr who's tardis as the space through the next set of doors there's a massive room for dining or dancing. You have to park in a car park on the opposite side of the road which is a bit inconvenient but its just added character and the food was nice too. We'd love to go back sometime soon .

As for the food, we have eaten in a lot of places in a number of countries but this was as good as anything we have come acrooss. And the finishing touch was dining beside the huge log fire on a freezing winter night. It was so good that we went back another couple of times during our week's stay. We are going ti Ireland again shortly on holiday and Saltwater Brig will be our number one priority for another visit. We were back in Ireland for another holiday in November. The Saltwater Brig was top of our agenda for a return visit.......and we weren't disappointed. Once again everything about it was superb - the beautiful location beside Strangford Lough, the cosy surroundings and the welcoming staff (especially Olive who is the friendliest waitress you could meet). Then there is the food. The extensive menu is fantastic and we cannot speak highly enough of its quality, and all very reasonably priced. If you enjoy "a taste of Ulster" put The Saltwater Brig on your MUST VISIT list. We guarantee you will love it.

Built in 2003, it was recently bought over (after its previous owners encountered tough times and the bank got involved) by a family who own a few other establishments in the locality. When you first walk into the pub, its like walking into the lobby of a luxurious hotel - well laid-out, spacious, high ceiling reminiscent of old Victorian buildings, and a wooden staircase with cast iron (i think) hand railings leading you up to the restaurant. There's also a small bar, more frequented by locals, into the left as you walk in. It's a busy pub at the weekend, often with a local DJ playing tunes from the 80's on Saturday nights, and live music/two-pieces on a Friday and Sunday that create a good atmosphere. As you can tell from the entertainment, they're very much focused on getting the over-25's crowd in. Unfortunately, you can't get Harp or Carlsberg on draught, due to the owners' contractual ties with Bass. That means they sell Tennents, which wouldn't be as popular. Personally, I wouldn't drink the stuff if it was free - in my opinion it tastes like what I imagine licking a rain-soaked Golden Retriever would. It's not a beer I would drink, and I know a lot of other drinkers who would avoid a pub where Tennents is the main beer on draught. They should do a survey in open-houses (bars which sell whatever beers they want and aren't tied to one particular brewery), and I would bet that Harp outsells Tennents by about 15 to 1, with Carlsberg not too far behind. Tennents is also famed (though I don't believe any empirical evidence exists for this, just anecdotal evidence from a lot of groggy people with thumping headaches) for its hangovers. That being said, you can get Stella Artois and Beck's as alternatives, both of which are pretty good beers, the development and introduction of which I imagine saved many a Tennents seller from going under. These are beers I also avoid, as I believe they could be more appropriately used as a propellant in NASA's vehicles - still, two very good beers. All-in-all, not a bad place to go for a night out if you're in the area, and hopefully the new owners continue to promote it with the energy they have been, but if I was staying in the city-centre I couldn't find any reason to travel up there.

The thing that got me first was the was no ramp leading into the building so we had to pick up the pram to bring our daughter in but there was strangely a lift to the restaurant area :/ I ordered the stir fry and it was honestly the nicest I've ever tasted! My partner ordered the burger and chips and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was so nice we were contemplating dessert but had to remind ourselves we still had shopping to do, otherwise I think we would have. The waitress was so friendly and the food arrived quick enough. I would have gave 5 if it wasn't for the ramp leading in, I was thinking about people in wheel chairs and those who struggled with steps but if I find that there is an alternative access for this I'll retract that part and give 5.
