One day, my brother, his wife and I decided to go on an adventure. We got in our car, put on our…read moreseatbelts and drive down a country road that wound its way through the woods. After a few wrong turns, some foul language and a severe dent in my sister in law's driving confidence, we arrived at our destination. Baljaffray. Baljaffry is perhaps not the most exciting destination for an adventure. The area plonked inbetween Bearsden and, er, some fields and generally considered the middle of nowhere by all reasonable people, does not seem to have much to offer bar housing estates. But a friend of my brother insisted Baljaffray was home to a quality Chinese restaurant that had to be visited called the New Manor Garden. Hidden in the middle of a dingy row of shops which included a Farmfoods, a private taxi firm and a chippy, I fully expected to find a cockroach in my chow mein. But appearances can be deceptive (after all, who would have thought that nice Tiger Woods would have turned up to be such a cad?) so we decided to venture inside. When the front door opened to reveal smiling staff and a bright and airy classically designed restaurant packed with full tables, I immediately discarded my first impression. I ordered a Tiger beer from the attentive waiter (New Manor Garden stock a range of bottled beers including Tsing Tao) then tucked into, hand on heard, the best Singapore Noodles I have tasted in Glasgow. My brother and sister in law, who ordered a range of meat based dishes, went one better and declared theirs it to be the best Chinese meal they have had in Glasgow (and believe me, this couple have had a lot of Chinese meals). My only complaint is the lack of vegetarian dishes on the menu but I would be happy to alternate between the mouth watering Singapore noodles and the almost as delicious vegetable curry which I tried on my second visit. The New Manor Garden also offer take away but you may have to pick up in person on a Friday and Saturday. Worth the trip to the sticks after all.

Anyway I digress this review is about a sit down lunch I had with three of my colleagues. The restaurant owns two units in a long line (literal meaning here) of retail and business fronts. It is a fairly spacious place but some of the tables looked a wee bit tight, like they recently accommodated a big table. Fortunately we weren't sat at any of these. We were given a table sat right beside the open door, however, it was a very warm day (balmy highs of 21) and the breeze was pleasant. We ordered off the lunch time menu which is about £6.00 depending on what you have. All in 4 of us with two waters and two fizzy drinks were £7.00 a head 10% tip included. Prawn crackers were put on the table before drinks were orders but after the menus had been handed to us. My starter was chicken noodle soup which was delicious. I often have this without feeling the need to season it, however, this time I used lots of pepper and soya sauce. It's a nice way to eat it once in a while. My choice of main was chicken curry and boiled rice. I cannot complement the curry in here enough, it is so good I have boiled rice to appreciate the curry more. I think in terms of a Chinese curry it is perfect. Spicy but not overly so, and just a great combination of chicken onions and the occasional pea. The consistency of this dish is also great, I've eaten it many times and can't remember feeling dissatisfied with it. Desert was a banana fritter which was nice if a bit overindulgent for lunch on a work day. However, if you don't have it the cost is the same. All in all friendly atmosphere and a great lunch. It isn't a showy as other Chinese or oriental restaurants, even at dinner time, but for great food it is hard to beat and I know I'll be back in a heartbeat.
