Looks like no one's reviewed this place in years. Well, not sure what was going on around 2012 when a few negative reviews popped up, but I personally really enjoyed this place. The waiting area (where you're seated if you're still waiting for members of your party to arrive) was nice and comfortable, and the service was great. Really professional and prompt. As a vegetarian, I can't attest to the quality of the meat dishes, but the rest of my family (there were 11 of us there all together) seemed to love theirs. The veggie dish I got was great. I also love that you get noodles or rice with whatever you order! I ate a lot of noodles. Noodles are kind of my thing. It is a bit spendy (my sense of how spendy it is isn't very good, since I'm an American and despite knowing that it's about $1.3 to a pound, I still read "£14" and think "hey, only $14!". Obviously, that's inaccurate). Most of my family live in Glasgow and go here quite often. I'd definitely come back the next time I'm over there! Not too expensive, imo, and really good food. Trudie M chose Ho Wong for her birthday dinner so on Friday we visited this longstanding Glasgow restaurant with an almost mythically good reputation. For years, maybe decades people have told me this is the best place for Chinese food in Glasgow. So I was excited to go for the first time and see if it really lives up to the hype. First impressions were good, very swanky although a bit to dark lighting for me. Jackets were taken from us and we were offered drinks in the waiting area. Quickly we moved to the restaurant and started to order the food. Now the prices are way way excessive in my opinion. Most main courses were around 18 quid. For that price this place was going to have to be amazing. To keep cost down we decided to share a banquet and swapped a fish fish out of it for a salt and chilli chicken one to fit the dietary requirements of the group. The food was ok but a bit to plain for me. This is definitely a British Chinese restaurant catering for western tastes. There is no good authentic dishes on offer here I am afraid. This means that although the food was fine, it seemed boring and very plain compared to the great food you can get elsewhere in the city Standout dishes for me was the crispy shredded duck wraps and......... (I'm trying to think of another standout dish)..... We had an interesting starter which was chicken of some type wrapped in lettuce leaves. Other than that the food on offer was spring rolls, ribs, etc. The clientele also seemed a bit "different" I felt like I was sitting in a Glasgow version Of the Sopranos. Everyone seemed to know everyone and have their favourite table. Reading back I'm going to take a star off. I started at three, but I'm going with two. Reason for the low score is that although the service, decor and food was all ok. It was just an ok three, but when you add in that it is crazy expensive and that there is now amazing other places to eat Chinese in Glasgow I feel that 2 star is the right grade to advise people to head to ka ka lok or Sichuan house instead. read more

Located on York Street in the city centre Ho Wong is a fairly up market restaurants. The vibe was quite a weird one tho...the decor was cool, modern and swanky but I still didn't really enjoy the atmosphere. I can't really pin point why but I just never really felt like I relaxed. The staff were swift and efficient but not really overly friendly or welcoming. I really have nothing good or bad to say about the waiting staff. The food at Ho Wong is pretty expensive in comparison to most other Chinese restaurants. After doing a quick calculation we worked out we would be the best part of £40/£50 per person before drinks, so we settled on the a la carte set meal for 6 at £32 per person which seemed a bit better cost wise. We started with a large plate of Mixed Hors D'Oeuvres - Chilli and Salt Spare Ribs, Prawn Toast, Chicken Satay, Yuk Sung, Salt and Pepper Prawn and Spring Rolls. Everything was good and I enjoyed it although it didn't blow my socks off, special mention has to go to the Prawns and chicken satay tho which were both really lovely. Next we were presented with Aromatic Crispy Duck served with Cucumber, Spring Onions, Hoi Sin Sauce and Pancakes. The duck was gorgeous...beautifully crispy and the fat rendered well so there was no fatty pockets. The portion was massive and more than enough for each of us to have 3/4 pancakes. I have a bit of a thing for aromatic duck so this was probably my favourite dish. For mains we were served a banquet of Fillet of Beef in Chilli and Salt, Sweet and Sour Chicken, King Prawns with Spring Onions and Ginger, Fillet of Beef Cantonese Style and Sliced Chicken with Green Pepper, Salt and Chilli Chicken with Fried Rice & Soft Noodles. It was certainly a large spread of food...I wouldn't say I had any stand out dishes (which in its self probably says everything I need to!) but I did like the juicy big prawns which were pretty tasty and the tender salt and chilli chicken which I went back to a few times for more pieces. Again I wasn't blow away with anything but it was all nice enough at £32 a head, if I had paid nearly £20 for any of these dishes I would have been seriously unimpressed. Dessert was also included in the price but I decided to skip as they all looked like just frozen bough in ice cream dishes - which is exactly what they were. Utterly uninspiring and disappointing, and in the current Glasgow food scene just isn't good enough anymore. Our portion of the bill came to £80 for two people which included the tip...was I happy with the value for money?? Yeah I guess so....maybe?!?! I am always more than happy to pay a reasonable amount for food so it's not the overall cost that bothers me, what I can't get my head around is that the food doesn't even come close to places like Asian Gourmet or KaKaLok and is nearly 3 times more expensive. The whole experience just left me feeling kind of meh! I neither liked or disliked it. I never enjoyed the vibe and although the food was nice enough I have had much better and more authentic Chinese food in quite a few other Glasgow restaurants recently much cheaper. Ho Wong is one the oldest and classiest Chinese restaurants in town. Service is swish, the staff courteous and the place is immaculate. However, I came here to eat and not to stare at the fancy decoration or be entertained by our spiny table. Price wise, its high, but you would expect that for a swanky restaurant. Think around £17-20ish for a main course not without your carby side of rice / noodles that is. Because of the fairly expensive mains we decided to go for the Banquet meal for 6, after all, at £32 a head it seemed like good value for 4 courses with tea & coffee included. Within a few minutes of ordering our starter platter arrived, consisting mainly of all things fried. Fried prawn toast, fried spring rolls, battered fried prawns....you get the jist. Some chicken satay skewers and ribs were also supplied but nothing seemed particularly special or home made. Next up the shredded duck which was the highlight of all the dishes and this was followed by a selection of the houses favourite dishes, served with rice and noodles. My gripe was that everything was all rather bland and what I would describe as 'Honky' Chinese food. Yup, it was all crowd pleasers with nothing particularly authentic or exciting on offer. The puddings which followed consisted of pre-packaged ice cream deserts with 70s-esque names like Fantastica and Coconut Bomb. Mines was frozen solid and seemed like it had been burried in snow since the last ice age. It was tasteless and not what I would have expected a classy place like Ho Wong to be serving up. At the end of the meal I was banging on about how good the filter coffee was. It only struck me later that that didn't quite sound right :/ I feel for the prices being charged, it wasn't really with the money and the speed at which food came out was concerning. We rocketed through 5 courses in about 1-1.5 hours!!! Stopped in for the business lunch with a large group of colleagues for second maternity leaving lunch of the summer. We had our own dining room and the restaurant is spotlessly clean, simple decor and nice and cool, if that kind of thing matters to anyone but me! The business lunch is £11.50 with a wide selection of traditional Chinese dishes. I started with a thick hot n sour soup. It was okay, the chicken, prawns and other assorted bits within were a bit bland and I'm not even sure what the small white cubes were. Scoffed it anyway. The main course was a major step up. Lovely fried rice and the beef gumbo was delicious; the thick beef strips and peppers working their magic in my mouth. As I was out with mainly girls, I also got to vulture off their substantial leftovers so a wee bit of sweet n sour chicken and chicken satay as well as some noodles also went down nicely! I had a Chinese lager, which I can't remember the name of but it was miles better than any of our UK efforts. A definite four stars from me. Ho Wong has been standing on York street for as long as I can remember. After hearing such amazing things about it we decided to go here for my birthday. I had heard that it was the most traditional Chinese restaurant in Glasgow! That it is not. If your whole party has not arrive they will seat you in the waiting area. The place is immaculate and the staff run like a military operation. It was a Friday night and it was mobbed we were shown to out table. The place is very swank and it does have a traditional feel to the place. It's priced quite high for what you expect a Chinese should be priced £16 -£18 for a main dish! You must be thinking it's fine dining. We decided to go with the banquet which was £32 bucks each which actually turned out very reasonable for the amount of food we had. For starters there was everything from ribs to spring rolls to chicken satay. then out came crispy duck pancakes best dish of the meal. then the mains all served with rice and noodles. A nice selection of British Chinese dishes including sweet and sour chicken. The food was not terrible but it wasn't fine dining traditional Chinese. It is more of a very over priced takeaway. We came for a leaving-do and had a private room booked for maybe 15 of us. The service, as you will see from other reviews, was fairly stereotypical with quite brusk servers who shouted and slapped cutlery down while seeming to loathe us all. The food itself was good though. My hot and sour soup was not too spicy and full of flavour. The Sweet and Sour chicken was good as well. I also had some Chicken Satay which while the chicken was cooked nicely the sauce seemed as though it was was over-reduced; it was the darkest satay sauce I've ever encountered and was almost tar like. All in it was good but I'm not sure I'd rush back again. The set lunch for two courses is £11 which isn't bad for the amount of food you get. Ideally the service would be a lot better. You eat fast in Ho Wong. Admittedly we were there on a Christmas lunch, and no restaurant is at its best in that situation. It looks good, and the standard menu has lots of interesting stuff, so I'll go back and try it sometime - but at Christmas, I'm not so sure. From assuming I can't use chopsticks to rushing the courses, it was just a bit disappointing. And 'Szechuan' prawns aren't generally just prawns in sweet chilli... A szechuanese person would laugh at these. So - busy, fast, uninspiring but nothing too much wrong with it. I'll give it another go, see how the 'real' menu goes. read more

This is an all round great place to eat if you're looking for authentic chinese cuisine in the centre of Glasgow. The restaurant is pleasantly decorated and has a very relaxed atmosphere. The menu is full of authentic tasting dishes which are also reasonably priced and the staff are welcoming, courteous and provide an excellent standard of service. read more

The service is excellent, plenty of efficent staff to cater to your every need. The food is the best ever. I have visited several times and never been disappointed. It is expensive but worth it. A great place to come for a special treat or if you are feeling flush, get yourself down there. It is fantastic value at lunchtime, a lot of the menu is available for £14.00 with coffee for 2 courses. The only downside is a lack of exciting sweets, which is usual in a Chinese. Highly recommended by those who haven't been for a while, another big site gives warnings in more recent reviews. Food excellent, some veggie dishes offered flair and taste, others didn't. Service however was brisk, abrupt, rude and quite frankly not deserving of a tip nor the £300+ bill that 8 of us ran up in the 2hrs we managed to stay there, and the last 3/4 of an hour only because we purposefully took our time over a coffee. Plates banged down, sides of noodles & rice dished with no care or attention and a dessert menu thrown on the table. Booked a table for 6 and then added two surprise visitors, The meal was good and food was excellent (as usual) However we were hit with a compulsory service charge of £25 per person (for group of 8) which we were not expecting and did not realise at the time. This increased the final bill by around 50%. Food and drinks bill being £440 + £200 service charge. Total bill reaching £640 On reflection this was excessive. I highly recommend eating at Ho Wong. I go here once or twice a year as part of a family get together and it has never disappointed. The prices are a little higher than other places but the quality of the food and the speed of the service justify it. If you're going with a group of people, definitely get the sharing platter, it's brilliant. All in all, a fantastic evening is had every time I go and I would strongly recommend to others as well. read more

We had such a great time at this restaurant that we ended up going there twice during our five day stay in Glasgow. The hot and sour soup was among the spiciest that I've ever had. This place has great reputation and deserves it I went here on a friday night with a few friends and had a great time and fab food the service was excellent I cant fault anything at all, It also has a private room that can be hired out for meals parties whatever you want i would recommend this place to anyone and everyone great food great night and prices are pretty good aswell for the food and service provided the only thing is its always busy at weekends so you will have to book a table small detail as would do this most places. read more

To me the Ho Wong without a doubt is one of the best restaurants in Glasgow. Staff and food are wonderful. The menu is large with loads of choice and they do the best Chicken Satay outside Asia. Also worth mentioning is their crispy seaweed which is so good. If you fancy a desert then try their Toffee Apple balls which are sublime. It is fairly pricy but certainly not overpriced for quality of food and service that is provided. They also have a reasonably priced lunch menu and choice on this is not bad. This is a most excellent restaurant and a highly respected institution in the Glasgow restaurant scene. The main dining room itself is a low-key, intimate experience made all the better by quick and efficient service. Particular strong points in terms of the menu are the spare ribs in capital sauce and the salt and chilli seafood selection. Personally speaking, this is the best Chinese restaurant in Glasgow. I hate chinese food. I avoid the takeaway places on the grounds that I don't want to die in my mid twenties. So I wasn't best pleased about being dragged along to sample another Chinese restaurant saturated delights.It's an auspicious start as we struggle to find it, since it's tucked away down near the Clyde in the Bussiness centre of Glasgow, actually there's a rumour some developer offering them money to re-locate. Anyway I'm rambling lets' just say: it's safe to say- it's bloody brillant!!! The best chinese restaurant in Glasgow by an absolute mile. I know some people like the Amber Regent in the West End but The Ho Wong is in a different league,it's one of the best restaurant in Glasgow. I'm not going to reccomend what to get because it will all be good, the service is fantastic. It is expensive but it's worth every penny, I would eat in every other night of the month just to be able to go there once a month. I would also recommend booking in advance especially at the weekends but if you want good food and really nice night out I urge you to check this place out. I had read a few reviews and friends told us it was a great place but unfortunately I wouldn't go back. We weren't impressed with the food and have had much much better elsewhere. The venue and service was fine, nothing to complain about but they did want to top up our wine every two seconds which was a pain and resulted in me asking them to leave it until we ask for more. The menu had a lot to pick from but not your usual, if you want the typical curry or chow mein you won't find this but different dishes you wouldn't have tried before. The salt and chilli chicken wigs are tiny, not very crispy and a bit fatty tbh and my main of sweet and sour chicken and prawn was alright, chicken and prawns cooked perfectly. Husbands satay was nice but very thick and strong in flavor, his salt and chilli seafood was nice, the fish was so tender and the batter was extremely light. He ordered some satay sauce as the dish itself had no sauce so was dry. We got noodles and rice to share which was plenty for two. It was just NICE, wouldn't go back unless a friend had a birthday there or something. I'll stick to my top three Chinese restaurants in and around Glasgow :). read more

This restaurant is fantastic - the food is amazing and the decor is very nice. The menu is very varied and their shredded beef in plum sauce is to die for! Service is excellent. It is quite expensive to dine here, but it is worth it. If you are there after 6pm (or on a Sunday) there is free on-street parking just outside. read more
