The selection of chocolates, nuts, candies and ice cream is huge. I tried a two different milk chocolate vanilla buttercreams, a white chocolate buckeye and a normal buckeye. The buttercreams were not my favorite. The two buckeyes were better. Loved this old fashioned soda shop in Circleville! They have a counter with stools lining their ice cream counter on one side of the store. The other is filled with displays of chocolates, candies, and nuts. As you walk in the smells invite you in. The aesthetically pleasing look of the store is a feast for your eyes. Buy candy per piece by the pound or buy premade boxes. I bought several different pieces to get a good sampling. The chocolate is really good. It has a creamy consistency and amazing flavor. This is a wonderful little stop while shopping in downtown Circleville. read more

In the year 1840: - the US still had slavery - William Henry Harrison was elected president - you might have worn a hoop skirt or bonnet - the lightbulb was still 30+ years from being invented - everyone rode around on horses ....and Wittich's was making their delicious candy. It's hard to believe, but the oldest confectionery in America is still going strong in my hometown of Circleville, Ohio. True to tradition, Wittich's still makes all their savory sweets fresh in-house. The advent of electricity and automobiles have only made this cove all the more charming (and efficient). It's been family owned and operated since the very beginning -- no small feat considering next year will be its 170th anniversary! The family did eventually concede to rebuilding the store in the late 1990s, doubling its size and installing a soda fountain salvaged from another local haven that hadn't been as fortunate. Wittich's is a wonderful gem, warmly embraced by a community being overrun with chains. I love this place! I'm not home very often these days, but you can be sure that when I am I always make a point to stop in for some cinnamon mints and buckeyes (chocolate covered peanut butter -- not the poisonous ones!). If I have time, I'll take a seat at the 1930s style soda fountain counter for a root beer float, spinning in circles on the stools like a little kid, or on nicer days I'll sit outside at a picnic table under a sleepy maple. They have their own original recipe for mints that (as far as I know) hasn't changed since the days of yore. Definitely try a Brown or Purple Cow at the soda fountain, or if you can make it in October anything pumpkin is sure to be a winner. If you're feeling really inspired, they also sell candy molds for those who want to try their own hand at confectionery. You can get stuffed animals, coffee mugs, and other miscellaneous containers to fill with goodies for the perfect gift, complete with complimentary gift wrap! I cannot gush enough about Wittich's! I truly love this place, and I hope they have another 100 years (or more!) of continued success. If you're ever heading south of Columbus, it is definitely worth the detour. read more

Oldest Candy shop in America, I've got to go. Being very sick from the overload of food at the Pumpkin Festival I still was willing to make room for Wittich's. Turns out there was no need, I sampled the ice cream and it was no better than grocery store options, really? I think people like the IDEA of this place and the history of it but the candy and ice cream options didn't do anything for me and I left without feeling the need to purchase a thing, plus it was rather pricey. read more

Wittich's has so much to offer, but sill has so much potential! We enjoyed our visit to Wittich's Candy Shop today. From homemade chocolates to an old fashioned soda fountain, it's evident the quality of their products and the friendliness of the staff has kept this business alive for 172 years. I'd never heard of a "phosphate" before, but happily ordered one & was delighted to see the nice lady hand-mix my vanilla flavored version of this soda drink for me. It was delicious. My companions each had hot fudge sundaes and raved about the richness of the chocolate fudge, made from a recipe passed down through the Wittich family over the years. The chocolate candy is terrific. Its creamy & rich texture is backed up by really nice flavor. Nothing artificial here. With all of its success, there is so much opportunity and potential left for this shop. Its layout is a bit cluttered & signage and candy descriptions would be very helpful. I also think they could do more to capitalize on their status as the oldest continually operating candy shop in the country. Once inside, you'd never know this place has such a long history behind it. They should also trade the 70's era hippie music playing in the background for some ragtime tunes that really play up the historical angle. This shop has great products, service & people. I love this candy shop! It has all the old world charm you would expect from one of the nations oldest confectionaries. It features an old-fashioned ice cream soda fountain, with some of the best hot fudge in the world. They offer a wide variety of handmade chocolates in milk chocolate and dark chocolate. They can create chocolate boxes to order with the varieties you like or you can grab a premade box to go if you are in a hurry. They also offer other typical candy shop fare such as sweetened nuts, jelly beans, suckers, etc. They even have an area in the front with candy making supplies to purchase to make your own candy and chocolates at home. My only complaint is that I sometimes feel rushed because of the layout of the store. I wish they had a cash register in the front to check out, because whenever I go in before a holiday and it is busy, I don't feel I have enough time to look around and select what I want. The way it is currently set up you purchase your items from the people who are making the candy boxes, so it feels like you need to know exactly everything you want when you step up to the counter. They are working with in a small space so I guess it is the best set up they can offer at the time. read more

I've lived in Circleville for two years now, always wanted to check out Wittich's. Today after working in the alley next to and behind this shop I was severely thirsty so I went in there for a drink (seeing as their sign said they had sodas), I was met with the most awkward feeling i've ever had in a store no welcomes, no smiles, just awkward stares. I walked up to the counter and the girl behind it looked at me, frowned, then turned around and started cleaning. I turned to the woman behind me she just stared. I was literally waiting a good minute at the counters until the woman behind me said. "Just ask her if you want something!" I replied" I've been working in the alley here and was looking for something to drink." "There is a pop machine outside." She replied hastily. Now I don't know if it was because I was dirty from working with asphalt or what their deal was. I just know I am never returning to this candy shop. If you're ever within 10mi of Circleville, you really need to come to Wittichs. It's the oldest family-owned candy store in the US. If you go in on the right day they will be making some of the candy right there in the shop. People come here literally from all over the world to make their own candy and watch how they make things.
