A bit hard to find, since they've moved from a storefront to an office in a nondescript building. Follow your GPS. It is just to the north of Wendy's, and you can turn in off High or down the little alley that runs directly behind Wendy's. They don't have the nostalgia candies anymore, but they do have plenty of good chocolates. The owner was super friendly, give me a couple samples and asked my tastes to figure out what I might like. I ended up with a pound of turtles and some chocolate covered pretzels. They are very very very good. You can buy them by the pound, although I think you can also get a half pound or whatever. But hey, it's good stuff, and although I will try to make it last, I know it will be gone pretty soon. Walk-ins are only on Wednesdays, so check their website for hours. Most of their business is online, and they have free delivery to a lot of Columbus, so that is probably a good idea for most. I happened to be nearby and made sure I came during their open hours. But hey now, free delivery of excellent chocolate? I will keep that in mind as a gift, or as a gift for myself. read more

This is a cute little candy shoppe. The cutest part about it is that they have shelves of "penny" (not literally) type candy - as in candies that a kid could come in and get with just a dime or a quarter. They also have the old fashioned giant round flat lollipops, a nice sugar free selection, roasted nuts, and a good assortment of chocolates in the back. The staff was very friendly - we got a pleasant greeting when we entered - and we enjoyed our visit. The buckeyes we purchased were very tasty too! read more

Hidden in a tiny, nondescript plaza in Clintonville just a block or two north of N. Broadway, Colonial Candy Shoppe is an unexpected treat in a rather unexpected location. Although it's significantly smaller than its local powerhouse rival Anthony Thomas, Colonial still manages to offer a more than ample selection of sweets at prices that are too good to be true. The walls are lined with a standard assortment of jelly beans, lollipops, and other bulk candies that can be found just about anywhere, but once you focus your attention on the area surrounding the checkout counter, you'll find a selection of truffles and creams that should be the envy of the entire 614 area code. Caramel, peanutbutter, french vanilla, mint- you name it and they've got it, often in both milk and dark chocolate varieties. What really got me excited about the overwhelming selection of goods behind the glass was the price. Available by either the pound or the piece, I managed to mix and match a selection of 6 truffles and creams for- wait for it- $1.78. To the best of my memory, that's even cheaper than the cut-rate candy selection at the Giant Eagle two miles down the road. The truffles are the perfect size and texture- rich, creamy, and not loaded to the point where you're afraid of an onset of diabetes after eating just two. They certainly can't be good for you, but it's a candy store, so who are we kidding? Regardless, Colonial is a hidden gem that's definitely worth looking for if you're in the area. read more

I noticed the sign outside advertising cream eggs for Easter. They have two sizes and in addition to multiple fillings they're available in milk or dark chocolate. The 6oz runs $5.75. Upon entering the storefront I found greeting cards and lots of Easter stuffed toys. They have a variety of brand name candies (not all chocolate) and sugar-free candies. read more

I was delightfully surprised at the variety of delicious treats at this small shop. They have not only the usual (think buckeyes and chocolate covered pretzels), but also classic confections that are no longer made by the larger candy manufacturers. I'd been looking for years for butterscotch caramels, a nostalgic treat I enjoyed since childhood. Well, they have them...and a lot more. Not bad, just not what I was looking for. There were a few too many little gifty trinkets and stuffed animals, kids candy (like over-sized lolly pops, multi-colored dots on paper, and Bubble Tape) , and too few sugar free items. That happened to be what I was seeking. I think if you're in the area, walking by, and happen to need a sugary sweet treat for you grandmother, then this would be perfect. They do also have ice cream and a menu of shakes and other frozen desserts. read more

Colonial Candy Shoppe does a respectable job of things. It is, after all, a candy shop. It's tough to go wrong there. They have a variety of chocolates (coconut cream, truffles, caramels and the like) and nuts at reasonable per pound prices. They also carry some more commercial brands like Scharffen Berger. Bulk M&Ms in several different colors are available as well. Sadly, there are some deficiencies. The chocolates that the shop sells (Heggy's) are made in Canton, Ohio. If you want locally made candy, you have to head to Anthony-Thomas. What's more, the candies are individually wrapped, which makes the experience slightly less authentic. Colonial offers ice cream too, but it's just Velvet brand. Nothing to rave about there. The help is super-friendly there so you'll feel welcomed. All-in-all, this is a fun neighborhood candy shop. read more

My husband is from Northeast Ohio and when he saw they carried Heggy's candies (made in Canton), he was in love. A little taste of home for him though he really wishes they'd carry traditional melt-away mints instead of the pink Technicolor version they sell. I didn't grow up on Heggy's but it's good stuff, especially the turtles. WOW. Those babies are awesome. I'd love to see a little more selection though I can't really say of what, there just seems to be something missing that I can't quite put my finger on. The lady is super nice and we chatted her up about where to go when she picks up her candy load next time. I know they don't carry "locally made" candy but there are PLENTY of other places who carry that kind of stuff. There's no law that says if you open a candy store in town, it all has to be made here. There's enough room and audience in this town for everyone to peddle their sweets. Now I'm going to see if I can find any rogue turtle pieces in the box. read more

Colonial Candy Shoppe is a wonderful place. I went to this shop to purchase buckeyes as a gift for my boyfriend's family. The person who helped me was absolutely kind and showed me great customer service. I also bought other chocolates since they also looked quite tasty. On the drive home since I could not wait (haha), I tried a milk chocolate peppermint. And much to my tastebud's delight, it was very good. My first visit I was greeted by a nice sweet girl on Saturday morning and I got a great ice cream cone. So I decided to come back and get Heggys Chocolate and felt welcomed by a young man who helped me with the heggys chocolate system, then was told 'I'll be right back I'm not permitted to use the register yet, I'll go get my dad.' You may or may not get what you order. I ordered a Java Creme Milkshake for $4.50. The description of the item was a milkshake made with coffee ice cream, topped with homemade whipped cream, with some chocolate-covered espresso beans on top. When the proprietor handed me my shake she informed me that she was out of whipped cream, but had put a few extra esspresso beans on top, then charged me the full $4.50. I was beat (hence the need for a Java shake!) and not up to arguing with someone about their business practices, so I just paid it, took my shake, and left. For one thing, I don't even like the espresso beans, and wasn't going to eat them anyway. And without the homemade whipped cream, there was nothing to really distinguish this shake from the one I get at UDF for $1.99. If she was interested in providing decent customer service she should have asked if the extra coffee beans were an acceptable substitution, or offered to take a buck off the shake, or asked if I even wanted the shake at all, since what she could provide did not match the description of what I ordered. And the shake really was not any better than the $1.99 shakes at UDF. read more

Small shop with the sweetest folks running it. Absolutely insisted if it was our first time in, that we had to sample some chocolate - you don't have to tell me twice. The chocolates are made in Ohio; my husband and I both loved the cherry cream as our favorite.
