Nice little family-run business. I've seen it many times but finally decided to stop in for some quarantine supplies, er, Easter candy. They had plenty of standard items, plus a bunch of things for Easter. Bunnies, crosses, etc., in various shapes, sizes, milk/dark chocolate, etc. I had to get a bunny for Baby K, of course, and she liked it. No sugar free, so nothing for my mom (though dark chocolate would be better for diabetics.) They had just made peanut butter eggs, so one of those for Sweetie. And then I had to keep myself from getting one of everything for me. Ended up with eagles (turtles,) toffee, and bacon brittle. The eagles are excellent: rich chocolate, good caramel and nuts, one is enough but you will want more. The toffee is good, pretty hard so none for Baby K or anyone with bad teeth, wrapped in rich dark chocolate. Haven't tried the brittle yet, but come on, bacon, you know I had to get some. Yeah, yeah, there are peanuts in there, too. I bought too much, and yet am afraid I will run out too quickly. Prices are a little high but you get what you pay for- this is good stuff. Glad to see local businesses making it through this. Glad this place is here. I'll be back. Note: the sign says Eagle Family Candy, not John Eagle, and it's a tiny place so use GPS and be careful. Oh, and speaking of careful, good safety procedures here, with hand sanitizer on the counter and minimal contact. But, it is small, so it would get crowded easily. We've been going here for years as we live just up the street. Nice candies, but the all time favorite is their BUCKEYES! Hand dipped and delicious with high quality chocolate. Got some buckeyes for my wife for Valentine's day and she loved them. Small family-run store and the decor is nothing to write home about, but the candy is excellent! read more

My grandma used to love John Eagle Candies with a passion. So once a year I'd drive up to get her a box of chocolates for Christmas. She would gently shake the box and smile, she knew what was inside. Her eyes would light up brighter than the miniature Christmas tree she'd have sitting on her end table. Grandma would always eat one right away and then tuck the box back so she could enjoy them later. I've thought about going in after she passed in '93 but it just felt awkward. The other day, I finally made the turn into their parking lot and found that it's still the same small candy store as before. The old pictures sitting on the shelves attest to the time honored place this business has in Columbus. As others have noted, it's a small store. It opened in 1946 and so now it's a little old and worn. There's frankly not a lot of chocolates on display. It's the basics but the chocolates they have are good. As another reviewer noted, they have their Eaglettes (turtles) and they are wonderful. They were my grandma's favorite and they are mine too. I'm glad that they are as good as ever. This place has gone completely down hill. They are now at the bottom. This is what I just sent them on Messenger. I just received my delivery of candy that has taken 6 weeks to get. You should be ashamed of yourselves for sending this out. It was supposed to be a box of mixed dark chocolates. First, the chocolate is anything but dark. Second, the pieces I have trie are all the same. Vanilla cream. Third, from what is supposed to be a reputable company, they are the weirdest looking chocolates I have ever seen. They look like a box of buttons. Like something you would find at a movie theater in a small, over-priced carton. And, finally, they look like they were packed by a 5 year old. I have purchased chocolates from you in the past and enjoyed them very much. That is why my daughter-in-law took the time (several trips to your store) to order them and make sure I got them. If you were unable to fulfill the order, you should have said so and returned her money. I will never purchase candy from you again, nor will I recommend you to anyone else. read more

I have always been put off coming here because the place always looked closed or dark when I walked by. But, much to my surprise, it's just hard to see in from the outside. I stepped in only in search of buckeyes. There's only one Buckeye I've come to appreciate since coming to Columbus but I switched grocers. Unfortunately, that left but one brand . . . Anthony's. I don't know WHAT they do to that poor candy, but it tastes over processed and mildly like plastic. So I came here in hopes of finding something good. I did. The buckeyes are hand dipped, you can tell by the tell tale tooth pick hole in the center of the peanut butter. The chocolate tasted fresh, sweet but not sickeningly so. I read some of the other reviews after going and feel really encouraged to try more of their stuff, like there eagle (turtle). The store is small, and has an interesting smell that reminds me of my Aunt's house (musty), but quality of the candy trumps quantity any day. The girl ringing me up still offered a sample, as mentioned in another review, which was nice and over all I was pretty happy. There is some upkeep and remodeling that might help their business though, and maybe something outside to encourage people to pop in. (Color, pictures of candy on the window, something . . . We had a very specific need for milk chocolate cherry cordials (which is actually harder to find than you might think) and they had a lovely little package ready within minutes (with the added bonus of curbside pickup, because we need to keep distanced because of vulnerable family members). Kindness = five stars. Selection = two stars. Taste = two stars. Presentation = one star. Simplicity? Yes. This is the tiniest candy shop I have ever seen. I made a purchase simply because I was the only one there and I sort of felt rude not buying anything. I got a few chocolates, and unfortunately, they were nothing special. I hoped that maybe by keeping overhead low, I would see the difference in the product. Not so much. Hmmmmmmm - I'm a Columbus native and have had John Eagle Candies my whole life. (45 years) This is a simple candy shop offering handmade chocolates, and I prefer their candies to the other hometown candy maker Anthony-Thomas. As for the the 2 mediocre reviews, they obviously don't appreciate candies with nuts, or were blinded by the sun the day they walked into the candy shop. Yes the store is small. Yes the store has a limited variety of chocolates. But there are some truly quality candies coming from this candy kitchen.... Two very unique candies there are the Pecan Nut Balls and the Eaglettes. The pecan balls are vanilla butter creams coated in chocolate and pecans - there is no other candy shop in Columbus that offers this combination. The Eaglettes are what I would normally call a "Turtle", and it just happens to be the best darned "turtle" in the city of Columbus. This shop takes whole pecans that have been roasted in butter and salt, adds caramel, and coats in their milk chocolate. It is a unique taste that you will not find anywhere else. Perhaps if they had sampled these two unique candies, they could have appreciated a home made candy kitchen. I've been to some other candy shops that "stock" their chcocolates from other cities - and their chocolates are stale. For the longest time I've drove by John Eagle Candies and thought their sign was a left over remnant of time long gone, but little did I know, they actually still exist and are still functioning. The hours might be a little tricky, but if you're in the area, then a quick stop wouldn't hurt. The gentleman behind the counter explained their history, and the generations who took up being chocolatiers and how to make most all of their chocolates in house. The shop is super tiny, and it really has no ambiance to speak of. Some people may walk in and wonder if they're still in business at all, but it seems they keep most of the goodies in the back. They might do themselves a favor by either displaying their varieties, or at least have a list of what they offer for first timers. It felt slightly awkward when it came down to ordering, but the man behind the counter hooked us up. Overall-- The chocolates to me were very so-so. There's quite a few other chocolate shops in Columbus which exceed in flavor, but for nostalgic factor, it's a quaint little place. I'm sure Clintonville would not want to see them go, having been around the neighborhood for such a long time, so I'd still gladly stop by and give this Mom and Pop a few bucks for some homemade chocolates. Good candy. Friendly and helpful workers. They were nice to me and my six year old son. Selection is not vast but certainly plenty to choose from. Great place for assorted chocolates. On a Thursday morning we had planned to go to another candy place about a mile south of Eagle Candies that wasn't open till 3:00 PM. Eagle was open at 9:30 AM. They wrapped the box we bought, as it was a Valentine's Day gift. The store is small and the ambiance isn't much to speak of but to me that is a sign of strength. They don't need to spend much time on ambiance because their candy is good enough to keep us coming back. This is my new place for gift candies. read more

Chocolate is one of my passions in life. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to enjoy candy from places like New York City, Chicago, L.A. and even Switzerland, Belgium, and France. Some of these places provided excellent chocolate products. However, in my opinion, Eagle's Candy is as good or better than any of them. For example, their vanilla and chocolate buttercreams are perhaps the best that I have ever tasted. Yes, they have a single small store with limited selection, but I will always take quality over quantity. The business is still around because the chocolates themselves are amazing. I think it's due to everything being made by a married couple using the same machines and recipes they've been using for several generations. Although it is small and not up to people code of how it should look it is a fantastic candy store. Clintonville is known for it's historical appeal and this store is a great part of it. Never judge a book by it's cover. They have the best Buckeyes and turtles. They make everything handmade. My mom's side of the family lived in Columbus, so I've been eating Eagle's candy for about 55 years (on and off *g*). We always had some when we'd visit relatives, and always took some home on the return trip. Every Christmas my aunt and uncle would send a box of butter creams - they melt in your mouth! It's a family business, with true experts hand making all the candy in the back room. To compare it to stale drug store candy is an insult. I was out with a friend and we stumbled into this candy store. The person running the store was awesome! My friend and I didn't have much cash on hand (they weren't taking credit cards that day) and were only able to purchase a few things. The employee let us sample just about one of everything! After browsing the minuscule selection that this tiny Beechwold candy shop has to offer, it's pretty clear that this place does very little walk-in business. The display case that takes up the majority of the store showcases a small variety of candies that are made by hand on site, most of which are some variation of cream-filled chocolates. After being tempted by the chocolate covered cherries that were located at the far right end of said case, I asked the woman if I could purchase a few only to find out that you have to buy at least 1/4 of a pound. The thought of walking around on a hot day with a bag of chocolates in my hand did not seem like a good one, but I digressed and attempted to order a selection of chocolates that would eventually add up to $4 exactly. Not too bad. The problem I encountered was that the goods in the case were not representative of what was actually available for purchase, which meant the majority of the pieces I ended up with were of the dark chocolate variety. Oh well. I ate a couple of the chocolate covered cherries along with the butter creams and I can't say I was very impressed. I've had much better candy for considerably less from a Whitman's sampler box I got at Walgreen's, to be honest. If you're looking for an impressive selection of inexpensive chocolates that will please any candy lover, Colonial Candy Shoppe down in Clintonville is still your best bet. read more

I stopped in the day before yesterday and picked up a number of items. I enjoyed speaking with Bob Eagle's son in law (his daughter was in the back dipping chocolates). My husband enjoyed the coconut balls-like a buckeye but coconut instead of peanut butter. I think the peanut brittle is the best I have tasted. My son felt the chocolate covered pretzels were very yummy. I hope to continue to support this local business. I would love to see them refresh the retail space. That said, maybe they should focus on the manufacture and let someone else format the retail side? read more

When I read the negative reviews for John Eagle Candies, I just have to smile, because most people don't know good candy from bad candy. First off, I will agree the store hasn't changed much in the 50 plus years I've been visiting. However, the quality of the candy continues to be the best in town. John Eagle continues to use the finest in ingredients, including real chocolate, and not compound coatings like AT. The vanilla cream centers are still my favorite, and the usage of fresh nuts is greatly appreciated. Others can spend the big bucks on so-so chocolate, and I will continue to spend my money on the best chocolates. read more

Yes, it's a tiny store. If you need never-ending aisles of candy, there's always that something-or-other-Mart store. I've always found it to be tidy and rather quaint. It's not a chain-store clone. It's an individual. I've made at least one pilgrimage here every Easter for their chocolate-covered Easter eggs. Peanut Butter & Coconut are my faves. The French Cremes are also lovely--melt in your mouth and well-flavored. They have always been courteous and pleasant to me. Also, they are very good about taking an advance order, especially at this time of year for things like a particular flavor of chocolate egg. The BEST turtles on the planet (I think they call them Eaglettes). My fave are the dark chocolate ones, not always in stock, so I make sure to special order a few pounds around Christmas. It's hard to complain about handmade chocolate; for me especially. I have rarely met a chocolate I didn't like. To John Eagle Candies, I give kudos because they've been around a long time. This business has been in the family now for three or four generations since it started in 1935 on 5th Avenue in Columbus. In 1945 they moved to their current location on North High Street in Clintonville. While I was there I had the pleasure of meeting the grand or great-granddaughter, who is a lovely person. Staring at all the candies that are handmade by the family you'll find your chin getting wet as the drool trickles from your mouth. Making the experience all the more heavenly, I was allowed to sample some of the chocolate! I tried a dark chocolate honeycomb which was actually made with molasses and just looked like a honeycomb on the inside. Nevertheless, it was like a scrumptious toffee chocolate (think Heath bar). They're prices aren't too shabby; just realize they're by the pound. I couldn't resist taking home with me an eight ounce bridge mix for $3.95. With Valentine's Day nearing, a girl should have chocolate in her house. read more
