Admittedly, we weren't quite at our wit's end when we contacted Rebecah. As such, we weren't entirely sure Rebecah was going to be appropriate for us. Was this the right place to start? Were her qualifications and techniques going to be overkill? Should we just wait this behavior out? Our child had a tendency to yell and become frustrated more than other kids and the "anger book" we read wasn't very useful for our situation. I would say we were frustrated and slightly concerned that our child needed tools that we lacked. We're not frequent yellers ourselves and definitely not as intense as our child, so we weren't sure what to do. Well, right from our initial consultation with Rebecah, we knew she was going to be wonderful. She had an almost uncanny ability to understand our situation and really see who we were. And throughout the course of our meetings, it was like she *knew* us. Knew how our child felt and thought. Knew how we parented. Knew what advice would be just right. And furthermore, she seemed to genuinely delight in our yeller of a child and in helping our whole family improve our behaviors. I guess if you're that exceptional at your job, you might actually like working! But I don't know a lot of people in "caring" professions that aren't experiencing burnout. Rebecah is truly one of a kind. It's hard to think of new things to add to all of the wonderful reviews already written about her. I can relate to and agree with all of them. It bears repeating, though, that Rebecah gives you simple, practical tools that lead to swift improvement. There is no judgment, no labeling, no fault or blame. You might not realize it until you start with her, but this approach in and of itself can be a huge relief. We are grateful to have met Rebecah and to have her as a future resource. In the words of our 6-year old: "Rebecah is a very nice person who helped me not have anger and she taught me how to calm down with murfles (made up word) and how a downtime bag works. She told me how to squeeze. She always teaches her lessons using her stuffies. For example, some of her stuffies might be Cheetah and Bunny and they all make very fun lessons. She taught me when to be grumpy, like on the walk back from school. She taught me how to go to my ocean place to calm me down. I like her very much." read more

So, it's hard to describe Rebecah Freeling's approach- is she a child-whisperer? Or parent whisperer? Both? And her philosophy? I'm still discovering that, and the reason is that she stays very, very practical. If you have a specific problem with your spirited child, she'll give you a very specific solution to try. And then you have to ask, what's behind that, and why this solution? And this is when you'll get to the foundational principles that underlie her approach, which include: collaboration with the child to co-create a solution; highlighting positive behaviors, and giving as little attention to negative ones; that every conflict is a teaching moment for the child; helping your child save face; creating conditions where there is consistent positive reinforcement and reward for good behavior, that are quickly removed as soon as there's bad behavior. I say "includes" because we're still learning. What is definitely clear from the get go is that she loves this work as much as she loves children. And her definition of spirited child is a broad one. It's not only the child who sets the class on fire at school; it's also the quiet one with really strong feelings. She talks about this in her free class at Bananas. We were about one third a full session with her when we noticed better results. When you have a rational solution in place, it allows you have more control over the situation when it erupts, instead of just losing your top and getting royally frustrated. She was very patient and non-judgmental and gave us the tools for dealing with our daughter and each other during this difficult stage. She is a genuine kid-whisperer. Not only has she cracked the kid-code, she genuinely loves them and helping families - and it shows. If you need something to change in your relationship with your child or you are having difficulties - whether your kid is spirited or not - let this be the sign that Rebekah is the person you are looking for. I met her when I took a class on parenting spirited children. I took the class because I thought I was going crazy, thought I was the worse parent ever, thought that maybe I didn't even deserve to have a kid. I mean, I honestly dreaded picking up my daughter from daycare every day because I knew the crazy meltdowns, screaming fits and general angry, sullen attitude from my kid meant we were going to have a miserable night. I was crying myself to sleep from the frustration and anxiety of feeling so freaking helpless. I had tried so many things and read so many books that didn't help. I didn't know what to do, I didn't know how to change things or even understand why my daughter was the way she was. Every day was a battlefield instead of relationship. Just getting her dressed in the morning had become an hour long obstacle filled with crying, shouting, pouting and frustration - on BOTH our parts. It was pretty damn awful. First of all, Rebecah gave a great overview of why spirited children are the way they are and helped us all understand where the kid was coming from. That's half the battle right there. She gave concrete, yet kind solutions that gave me the control I needed as a parent but also met my daughters needs for communication, needing to feel in charge of certain things and being a part of the solution process. She completely changed our lives for the better. I was so excited that I sent a video of my kid actually getting dressed by herself without crying or fussing - someone pinch me! Overall, the relationship I have now is much calmer, filled with genuine love, easy moments, friendly banter, wonderful togetherness where both our needs are met. My kid went from constant ugly screaming meltdowns and complete refusal to do anything to being a great kid who loves her responsibilities and feels a part of the decision making process. Everything with my daughter is not perfect, but we are now both so much happier. By a mile. I have confidence in my parenting again. There will always be bumps in the road, this is parenting after all; however, we are in a comparative state of harmony. I've now seen Rebecah privately with my child. Rebecah is calm, centered, non-judgmental, kind, caring, and just completely FULL of solutions and tips and tricks. Just watching her interact with my child had given me so many ideas and tips. I had toyed with the idea of using Rebecah's services for months after having difficulty with my sweet but strong-willed 2-year-old boy. Finally after a weekend in Tahoe with friends ended with me wondering if we would ever be invited to another friends gathering again, we decided to set up an appointment. My little guy is very physical, not very verbal, and would get frustrated easily when we didn't understand or didn't do what he wanted. Over the course of 5 sessions, Rebecah helped us understand what our son has been trying to convey to us and taught us how we could appease his determined personality without being pushover parents. We already miss Rebacah and it's just been a few days since our last session, 8 weeks, once per week. Our beautiful 7-year old son is super energetic, passionate, emotional, and very strong, and my wife and I needed some help to better understand him, better understand ourselves and how we handle him and each other. In the 8 weeks, we learned so much and added tools to our parental toolbox, that we seriously didn't know existed or didn't have access to. I had taken a class with Rebecah through Bananas when my spirited son was 18 mos old. I remembered her saying that things would get worse, a lot worse, before they got better. Fast forward to 3/16/20 when Alameda Co announced a lockdown (i.e. shelter-in-place) due to COVID. While other parents were saying they would enjoy spending family time together, I was silently screaming NOOOOOO! I'm a single mom with a 6 yr old and 4 yr old, trying to work full time and homeschool. Home life went into a downward spiral quickly. Thankfully, I knew just who to call! First of all, it was nice to have some to talk to when I needed to vent during the extended shelter orders. My family time felt like I was trapped inside a primates exhibit at the zoo. I have known Rebecah for several years, and I can say, without reservation, that she is the absolute best when it comes to working with children. She provides guidance and structure in a way that kids (as well as parents) can understand. She's able to create a safe space by communicating on my children's level, without judgment. When my daughter turned 2 things got challenging (major tantrums, sleep disturbances, potty training.. all of the normal stuff). My husband and I realized that we didn't see eye to eye on discipline and we had no plan to work through things. None of us were really happy and every day was a series of battles. On Rebekah's website it says, "Don't lose hope. There's nothing wrong with you or your child. You have a special kid. A child who will respond to specific techniques that work for him and help him thrive." This is exactly what she delivers. My husband and I are so thrilled with the insight and guidance Rebekah provided during our sessions. Although the class was very insightful, we still struggled with how to communicate with our son. Rebecah won me over by, in our intro session, describing exactly how my children undermine my discipline attempts and why ordinary discipline doesn't work on them. She seemed to know them already! She provided alternate method that fit the needs of the high-intensity, emotional, controlling child. She has a great sense of humor and sensitivity to both the parents' exasperation and the humanity of the child; she's understanding, non-judgmental. It was a comfort to speak to her each week and it helped me and my husband keep our focus. She has an organized plan and is focused on working that plan to achieve our stated goals, including evaluating and assessing what's been working and what hasn't. The downside is that 8 weeks goes by so fast. It's a very good start, but a start only. My husband and I were literally at our wits' end with our two boys, the older of whom is spirited and aggressive. There was a lot of physical fighting going on. We had tried some other approaches, but we didn't feel like our concerns were properly addressed with those. Now, we have just completed 6 sessions with Rebecah. She heard us out, and it didn't seem like anything we described was new to her. She offered us solutions in a step-by-step fashion that helped us adjust our own understanding and handling of the situation, and ultimately helped ease the physical conflict in our house. In some cases, my husband and I disagreed about what to do, but she found ways to offer solutions that would work for both of us. I wouldn't say the physical conflict has been eliminated entirely, but it is less than it was before, and I feel less stressed about it because I now know how to handle it. We will continue to work on the issues into the future, since all the strategies she taught us are something that we will continue to use in the long term. In addition to helping us work on the physical conflict between our boys, she also helped us with some "bonus" issues too, like chores, games (that were causing conflict), and adjusting our family's spiritual time during shelter-in-place. read more

I love the name of her business because as a parent and grandparent I relate to being at my wits end especially when my children were young and now helping out with the grandkids! I've been reading her book "Your Rules are Dumb" ..again, love the name, but it's helping me see two things: I was on the right track with my kids even though in the middle of it it didn't seem that way and second she can help parents today navigate the feelings of helplessness and hopelessness when you have a spirited child. My husband and I met Rebecah when she came to speak at our daughter's preschool. At the time, we didn't think we needed much "help" with our daughter and her behaviors. We mostly just wanted to support her school and maybe learn some techniques as a bonus. About a month after we listened to her speak, our daughters tantrums and behavior got to a point where we needed help. She just seems to understand our daughter. She helped us understand her too.
