Initially, when we first reached out to her, our six-year-old (now seven) was having frequent, intense physical tantrums that left our nervous systems fried and our family feeling disconnected and strained. I actually created a log of his tantrums - prior to working with Rebecah, we were averaging 10 tantrums per month (we're talking physical altercations that required one of us adults to put our bodies over our child to keep him from hurting us). I worked with Wits' End when... I was at my wits' end! I have a grown daughter who I raised with a certain paradigm, and then I found myself parenting twins who are entirely different from my eldest and I was completely underwater, but so reluctant to let go of my long-held parenting perspectives. But after 4 years of virtually zero cooperation from two high-energy kids, I was ready! I read a book that Rebecca wrote about a particular strategy, and implementing it was truly like watching a miracle unfold before my eyes- my kids started doing what I told them to! Later, I had one 1:1 session with Rebecca to try to get a handle on some other parenting challenges. If I were not low-income, I would do more. I have recently re-invested in the early strategy I learned (it's been five years and I had drifted into wishful thinking that I could revert exclusively to the "connection-based parenting" I'd used with my eldest), and once again, relief and so much progress! We found a recommendation for Wits' End Parenting through the Berkeley Parents' Network, and when I read the description of what they do, it was the best description of what we were dealing with that I had found, and I felt hopeful. Our son, who is a glorious and exuberant 5 year old, has BIG emotions that manifest in tantrums we can hardly handle, with throwing of heavy objects, destruction. They always pass, but we are depleted. In addition, we were stuck in a rut where we had to tell him to do -whatever- several times, often ending in anger, and it was frustrating and tiring. There are many things to recommend Rebecca, including her understanding and welcoming manner and nonjudgemental interaction. She has a ton of experience and a plan for whatever you're dealing with. But also, she really gets kids like ours. Here's an example that struck me. Talking to her about consequences was the first time I encountered an expert/advice giver who understood *exactly* why, in our case, giving time-outs was useless and made things worse. (Because for a kid like ours, his only thought is "how do I get out of here?" and he will actively and aggressively try to exit the room/pound on the door trying to do that.) So, did Rebecah's plan work? I will say this. When we implemented it faithfully and regularly, yes. We already feel a little overwhelmed with our lives (two parents working full-time) and weren't able to swing all the plans, all at once. But we have them, and continue to work on it. However, as I said, for the most part, trying it Rebecah's way has been effective where nothing else has been. The thing is, I've read or consulted ALL the books and approaches, but at some point, if your kid is a challenge, you need someone who can hear and understand YOUR situation and give advice/plans targeted specifically for you. That's what you're paying for, and Wits' End delivers. We completed our first series of sessions, and plan to continue to have sessions with Rebecah, less often, but still regularly. read more

We reached out to Rebecah because our 6-year-old suddenly became much more explosive when he became upset and did not get what he thought was fair. Rebecah's counseling was tailored to the specific needs of our son and his responses to our parenting, but she also has a good and clear structure in place to guide parents with children who are having difficulty regulating their emotions. Rebecah seems to have an endless bag of tricks that work WITH children instead of ON them. We toyed with the idea of working with Rebecah for a long time before taking the plunge. We weren't really at our wits end with our 4 year old but we also felt like it could be easier for everyone and we were frustrated with the one-size-fits-all courses that we had taken online. We just wanted to know what would work with OUR kid. The first system we tried to help our eldest be more kind to her younger sibling worked like magic. It not only gave us a clear path for consequences, but it actually seemed to change their relationship and bring out the sweetness between them that I knew was there! Not everything worked as magically as that first system but that alone was worth its weight in gold and we learned principals that can be applied to all our tough moments. Rebecah knows her stuff. Especially for our spirited 10 yo boy. Overall he is a very good kid but has a lot of problems with impulse control and back talk. She gave us a plan that worked really well for him. It gave him a sense of control for him, fostered his independence and most importantly got his behavior right back on track literally by the count of 3 without yelling. We had tried numerous different methods before including 1-2-3 magic but the beauty of Rebecah's positive discipline method is that she focuses on motivating kids rather than threatening them. She always gives them something to work for so that they don't give up. She gave us a solid script for decreasing sibling fighting which puts the problem solving back on the kids to have them work out their own issues. She also helped us realize that for our kids to appreciate more, they need to contribute more to the family so they need to do chores/work at home which really takes the load of us. She also made us realize how we talk to our kids is how they will talk to us (obviously but hard to figure out how to stop when you are losing your mind). You do need to be consistent and work hard to get results but it does set up for a much better home life if you do! read more

My spouse and I have a very spirited and passionate 6 year old, who has a fairly different personality than both of us. We got to the point where we felt we had tried many many things but we were simply flummoxed about how to deal with various behavioral issues that came up and seemed to be getting worse and taking over the whole house. I was indeed at my wits end when I decided to give this a try when my spouse suggested it. It was so worth it. Rebecah offered tailored solutions for how to deal with behavior issues that neither my spouse nor I would have come up with on our own, and her solutions actually worked! After 18 months of COVID restrictions my children had gone feral. They were moody, angry and fighting with us and each other.
