Having gone to Pearl Vision for over 30 years, maybe I've just been fortunate in having better than average experiences with optometric and other eye care facilities in the past. Unfortunately I failed to read all the negative reviews posted here which mimicked my same experience, and which would have prompted me to go elsewhere for my annual exam. I anticipated paying out of pocket to some degree, even though my supplemental vision insurance through Aetna typically covers everything including a trial pair of contact lenses. However I was told at check in that my 'fitting fee' would range anywhere from $40 to $190 and that my contact lenses would not 'necessarily' be covered. So after the initial introduction to Dr Wise I explained that in the past I had been a patient at Pearl vision in California and because I'm on a monthly budget and my questions had not been clearly answered by the staff, I was not feeling comfortable about the exam. Dr Wise responded that her staff does not provide a cost estimate until the insurance makes that determination. That she was the 'Doctor' and I should be happy to have the exam and that no one ever asks her about costs. She then told me to go back to Pearl - and California - and refused to proceed with the exam. As others mentioned below I am still in disbelief that anyone engaged in the medical industry could be so uncaring about a patients financial questions within today's rising costs. But more importantly as a senior citizen I felt totally disrespected and discriminated against. Since I had been on vacation in Beaufort at the time, I scheduled the next appointment with a Charleston optometrist who was able to give me an exact outline of what to expect on the date of exam with nothing more than my membership ID: No out of pocket - zero deductible - first sample pair free. Dr. Wise was nice enough but I will not be returning. Attempting to order glasses I told the attendant that I only wanted the glasses my insurance covered without any Add-ons. Upon leaving I was given my glasses (never gotten my glasses they fast anywhere). Turns out I just paid $55 out of pocket for frames worth promo lenses. I was then informed I would have to pay an additional $60 to have my prescription put into my frames! From Oklahoma to North Carolina to South Carolina I have NEVER had to pay an ADDITIONAL cost to have my prescription that I just had an appointment to get, placed in my glasses! Because apparently I just spent my money to be cute and not actually to SEE! I'm so upset I'm literally sitting in my car and crying because who cannot afford this is me! So no, I definitely will NOT be returning! read more

So I went in for an eye exam as a new patient. Eye exam was fine, paid the little co-pay that my insurance required - no problems. When I went back in for my follow-up appointment, I was told that I needed to pay $175 for an additional, specialty eye exam that was not mentioned during my first appointment and not covered by my insurance as my insurance only pay for one eye exam per year. Then the staff were never able to get my contact lens Rx nailed down so I finally - after played phone tag with these people for MONTHS - ordered contacts online. Bottom line, they *seem* nice enough, but they over charged me and I was never able to actually GET ANYTHING out of them.... I will find a different doctor. read more

Usually I'm not one to write a review but I was not happy with wise. The receptionist didn't even acknowledge me when I walked in. The Opthalmetrist was not very kind and insisted that I get my eyes dilated but didn't explain why I should get them done. Finally I needed my prescription updated and my glasses had to be sent away and it took over two weeks and I had to call to be told they were ready. Luckily I could do without them for that long but what if I couldn't? Just not very pleased. read more

Dr wise and her staff were so friendly, approachable, and knowledgable. I had to have a scleral lense fitting for keratoconus which can be a very frustrating and agonizing process. But if you get a fitter who's very patient with you and kind like dr wise then you get lenses that fit well. This is the experience I had and now I can see so well with so much comfort. My life has completely changed and I'm so much happier now that I can see. read more

These guys are exceptional! I called to make an appointment, and they were able to fit me in just a few days later. The woman that scheduled me was incredibly friendly and gave a great first impression of what I could expect here. When I arrived for my appointment, I wasn't disappointed. The experience continued on in the same relaxed and friendly fashion as I interacted with the initial screening tech, then Dr. Wise, and finally, the tech that walked me through the glasses selection process. The initial tech put me at ease, Dr. Wise gave me a great education about my eyes, and the glasses tech gave some great advice about which glasses fit my face as well as my needs. I wish I was better with names, because I would love to praise the individuals more thoroughly. Fast forward to today (only 1 week later) and my glasses are already waiting for me. I am still reeling from the non-professional telephone call I received from Dr. Wise early afternoon after requesting my medical records to be transferred to another Optometrist Group in Beaufort who does honor my vision insurance. She informed me that no other Optometrist Group in Beaufort honored my vision insurance except for Walmart but actually I discovered another reputable group here does honor my insurance and I have been a patient of theirs for a very long time prior to going to Wise Vision Care. It only made sense not to pay out of pocket for services when my vision insurance, that I am paying into, will cover some of the expense. I was told by her not to ever return to that office again. Which I do not intend to. In times before I found her office to be very professional when my husbands vision insurance was used. This time what should have been a short exam visit turned into a lengthy one and I was told the amount I paid did include a contact which I was told later it did not. I called for a price on the contacts and was told they would need to get back to me. I was still confused due to the fact she placed a contact in my eye during the exam process but I was told it was not a "take-home" contact although the girl at the front desk seemed to think I had been given one to take with me. Very confusing during appointment for the exam and totally confusing today after the call I received after requesting my records to be transferred. Maybe they will learn from their mistakes when more customers request for the records to be transferred and again maybe not ? Still in dis-belief. read more

I am still in disbelief on what happened today. On 3/4/2019 I had an eye exam at Wise Vision care 1270 Ribaut road Beaufort SC for the first time in forever because it is getting harder and harder to read and I figured I needed glasses. So that appointment went well I paid a 10.00 co pay and 281.00 after insurance for a pair of glasses that totaled over $1000.00. I thought it was high but never bought glasses before so I figured it was correct. Today I had a follow up appointment and the cashier told me before I leave I needed to pay a $40.00 co pay. I asked her why it was $40.00 when I paid $10.00 for the initial visit and she said it was because today was a medical procedure. I then told her my co pay at the Doctors office was $30.00 and she changed it to because it is a specialty procedure. I figured I would just ask the Doctor simply to get a better understanding. So after my exam I asked her why last time I paid a $10.00 co pay and $281.00 for glasses that cost over $1000.00 and before I could get to the $40.00 co pay question she picked up the phone, obviously very upset to call someone and informed me that don't charge that much for glasses. I told her that's not even the point and she said I brought it up and we would discuss it. At that point someone else walked in the room and I finally had a chance to mention the $40.00 co pay at which point the "Doctor" said to escort me out and not to charge me for today and I could no longer be a patient there. Which was fine by me. As I was walking out I asked the employee if I could get my glasses that I ordered on 3/4/2019 and had paid $281.00 plus $738.00 from the insurance. She informed me it takes 2 weeks to receive them and I reminded her that this was the 15th day. The "doctor" came storming out told here to reimburse all of my money and to get me out of there. I simply had a billing question and she absolutely lost it. If you enjoy an eye exam with a huge helping of drama this is your place. If you are a normal person I would go ANYWHERE else. read more
