This review is for The Source located in Phase III beside the Running Room. I was helping my…read morefriend pick out a new cellphone and plan that would meet her needs. We went to a few kiosks and were not impressed with the service so far. There were 2 sales associates at the front of the door trying to entice people with free cellphones. We walked in and I asked the associate what phone and plan would be best for someone looking for unlimited Canada wide calling, limited text and data. He showed us the plans available through Virgin Mobile. It was great they offered unlimited calling weekdays from 5PM-7AM and weekends, and unlimited international texting. The cheapest plan was $34 with no data. They were offering a free iPhone 4 or Samsung Galaxy S3 for a 2 year contract, and $50 in store credit. We decided to check out a few other stores but went back the Source because we received such great service, no pressure, and it was one of the best deals. We looked for the same sales associate, Ameya, and he saw us and came to help. My friend and I went to look for what she could get with $50 and she decided on another charger and Bluetooth speaker. Ameya set up the phone, and let my friend choose between 5 phone numbers. He connected the phone to the in store wifi to show her how to connected to the Bluetooth and use the speaker. He gave her his card and said she could see him or call if she had any questions about how to use her Samsung. I was impressed with the patience and time he took with us. He was also very knowledgeable to answer the questions I asked. These days cellphone providers don't seem to provide much service but we were lucky to find one employee that really cares about service and customers. I would go back and see him when my contract is up.

The Source is a good place to find plugs and accessories when you're on the run. I remember when…read morethis place used to be Radio Shack, but not much has changed. They have a decent selection of tvs, mp3 players, laptops, phones, clocks and other small electronic items, however they're beaten in pretty much every category when compared to the big box electronic stores like Best Buy or Future Shop. As I mentioned, their selection is ok if you need something in an emergency, but otherwise I would not bother going into their locations...there is much better selection in the bigger electronic stores. I find their store very small and cramped, especially when the mall gets busy. The Source claims to have more personable service, however every time I'm here, I barely find any staff here, but if I do, then they're usually too busy with a customer.

The only upside to the experience is that one of the managers at a different Best Buy had pity on the run-around given by this location and fulfilled my warranty replacement need. Bottom line: as they put it "we're only salesmen -- we don't know how to do anything."

*There are multiple Best Buy Mobile locations at West Ed. This is for the one on the lower floor…read morenear the water park and food court.* I'm not sure if any mobile phone store can be rated above two stars. Sales reps who only sort of know what they're talking about (though even that is a stretch), trying to sell expensive warranties and other accessories that are marked up by 1000% and no, that is not a typo. One thousand percent. Ever since the Canadian government limited cell phone contracts to 2 years, the big 3 (Rogers, Telus and Bell) have been running tight ships with little in negotiations even for a loyal 10+ year customer like myself. My wife was on an existing 3 year contract when the 2 year max was regulated. As a result, she was able to get an upgrade earlier than the end date so that was welcome news. We were at West Ed and happened to walk by the Best Buy Mobile kiosk near the main food court. She was interested in the Samsung Galaxy S4 and what do you know, it says $0 when the provider had it for $99. Of course when we inquired we were notified that it was only $0 for new activations. Surprise, surprise. A classic case of bait and switch. Well, we were there anyway so let's find out what it will cost to upgrade. Basically... they quoted the phone price. I asked if there was a hardware upgrade fee of $25 like the provider. They said no. I was pleasantly surprised but still wary that it would come up. I was thinking, wow, great to go through these guys as we don't have to pay this scam! Later on the fee did come up and they had no idea why. Seriously? It's only a bogus fee that all the providers charge their customers (again, of course new activations wouldn't be paying for it). Thinking that the provider can't do much for us, we proceed with the sale. We sat through the sales rep's warranty presentation, which was $12.99 a month for the duration of the 2 year contract totaling $311.76. OMG what a rip!! I don't like to be rude and cut them off, plus it gives the sales person a chance to practice their pitch so we continue to pretend to listen, but of course we say no. The rep said OK and proceeded with the sale. Then another employee, maybe her boss, came and gave another spiel. *ROLL EYES* By this time I've lost interest in what he's saying and I don't even pretend to listen anymore. I guess my wife is nicer than me as I can see she's still nodding. I'm looking off in the distance. He continues to talk blah blah blah blah blah. Our answer is remains the same. At the end of the day this maybe wasn't the best idea to go through a middle man for cell phones. I have always gone through my provider but at the same time I feel like this is a way to stick it to them. If they're not going to throw me any bones then I'll go through the middle man which they likely have to pay out a commission to them. The middle man will pretend to be your friend and make you feel like it's beneficial to go through them. At the end of the day you're damned if you do and damned if you don't in this lose-lose situation.
