I was in town over the weekend with some girlfriends and we noticed they were playing the new Top Gun: Maverick. Yes, the #1 hit movie in the entire world right now was playing in little ol' Winthrop, WA on its opening weekend! Being in our middle ages we were more than happy to grab our tix online for the 8pm showing for the nostalgia factor alone, not really knowing what to expect from the movie OR the tiny theater. Well, lemme tell you, this theater is what all movie theaters should strive to be. It was small (maybe 100 seats? I'm not great at counting...), with not just theater-style seats but plush Barcalounger-type recliners which woulda been a great place to catch a nap except, it was TOP GUN and who could sleep through that? Next, they don't drop the screen until the movie starts. So while we were waiting we were treated to GORGEOUS views of the valley and snow-capped mountain peaks. It. Was. Magical. I'd be sad if I forgot to mention they have a full bar with great local beers on tap, plus snacks and (of course) the requisite movie theater candy and popcorn. I'd be more than happy to just pop in their cute little space for a cocktail even if I wasn't seeing a movie. Oh, and the sound system was great too. Highway to the danger zone, baybeeeee!

Anyway the Shafer Museum is a historically preserved town established by one of the area's pioneer families. There were buildings which showcased the lives of the families back then. Our grandsons enjoyed the scavenger hunt a lot- the prize was a gum-ball from an old fashioned gum ball machine which was pretty cool in itself. Take your time explore the different buildings-we took about little over a hour and a half. This is a must stop place when visiting Winthrop. No admission fee but please donate generously because the maintenance and administration is done by volunteers

We sat on their lovely outdoor patio and enjoyed a bottle of grenache rose - which was 20% off for national grenache day. Score! It was a really nice, light rose, and the perfect accompaniment to the beautiful cheese and meat board the winery provided for the event. As the sun set, and our names (sadly) weren't called for prizes, we were happy we'd made the trek from downtown (don't worry, it's only about a 5 minute walk) to end the evening in style. Winthrop Rink has their Great Outdoor Classic hockey tournament and require a $50 deposit just to…read moreapply and have your team considered. Yet they won't refund your deposit if you're not accepted. For the 12U tournament specifically, they had 20 teams apply and only 12 teams accepted. So the Winthrop Rink is keeping $400 for basically nothing. As a good business, they should refund the $50 deposit if teams aren't accepted. Them refusing to refund the deposit is a very sketchy business practice. Hockey is expensive enough the way it is. I'm recommending to all the other Seattle area hockey associations to skip the Great Outdoor Classic. Or at least buyer beware that there is a possibility of you losing money if they choose not to accept your team. (Seattle Junior Hockey Association, Tacoma Rockets, Sno-King Amateur Hockey Association, Seattle Kraken, Everett Silvertips Hockey Club, Kent Valley Hockey Association, West Sound Warriors)

I came here with my family…read morelast summer for a trail ride and we had such a great time that we all came back again this summer to do it again. The trail rides are led by Debbie, who is wonderful with horses and people. She take a lot of time to make sure everyone is comfortable on their horse and that the stirrups are just right. The trail ride goes through some beautiful country with breathtaking views, and Debbie knows a lot about the local plants and history which is really interesting.

We got the deviled eggs ($7 for 1.5 eggs) and the falafel Meza Bowls ($26) - they were delicious items that were nice and light - but massively overpriced for what they were. Maybe it's because we're in the mountains and it's hard to source ingredients. The staff are so sweet and the interior has a surprisingly very nice, candlelit ambience. There's lots of seating available, and you order at the cashier and take a number. The person at the cashier warned us the food would take an hour to prepare - it was WAY faster, so I'm happy she prepared us to be pleasantly surprised.
