needed to stop by the winners on stephen ave at 128 8 avenue sw to grab makeup wipes and browse a little, mostly because shopping in alberta still feels satisfying when there's only one tax. winners is always kind of hit or miss though, it really depends on how much time and patience you have to sift through everything. half the store feels completely random, but sometimes that's exactly why the best finds happen. you go in for one basic thing and suddenly end up discovering something unexpectedly good buried between racks and shelves. this location has a different vibe from suburban winners stores too. because it's right downtown on stephen avenue, it feels busier and slightly more curated, lots of office workers, tourists, and people wandering in while walking through downtown. the fashion and beauty sections felt better than expected, with more trendy pieces and fewer completely random leftovers. i ended up finding a butter yellow short sleeve cashmere cardigan on sale, which honestly felt like the perfect winners find, unexpected, specific, and satisfying enough to justify wandering the entire store. there's something weirdly fun about the treasure hunt atmosphere, even if you leave empty handed half the time. the location itself also makes the errand feel more interesting. stepping back out onto stephen avenue with the brick streets, patios, office towers, and downtown crowds makes even a simple winners trip feel a little more cinematic. definitely one of the better winners locations if you're already downtown. read more

Winners is one of those stores that is a hit and miss. First floor is all men stuff and a few random things like toys etc. Top floor is where the women stuff are. Why put the women clothing on top floor and other random things like pots and pan. You really have to spend a lot of time digging in order to find something you like. Prices are cheap but you just need time. read more

If you are a bargain shopper, this place is for you. They've got big brand names at lower prices than most... But be prepared: you will have to dig around a lot before finding a "winner." I stopped by and did a quick walk through, but I didn't have the patience to dig. At quick glance, they had a very limited selection of clothing or shoes in my size. I didn't find any "winners" during my visit unfortunately; Better luck next time! read more

All through college I loved shopping at Winners.. I spent a lot of time there and I had a bunch of friends working there.. (In Ottawa).. Now, after many years living abroad, I thought it would be nice to pop in to the place and see how things had progressed..Judging by this particular branch, I'd say not much has changed except for the prices having at least doubled,,, I was at another winners branch lately out in the West End and as expensive as it was, at least it was well organized and stocked, even during the craziest part of the Christmas Holiday season, This branch downtown however feels like some kind of chaos.. The place doesn't feel particularly clean and one gets the sense that there are more loss prevention shoppers than actual shoppers., Not only that, but I heard at least two intercom calls for "washroom checks" in a 20 minute period. They do have an excellent selection of spa and bathroom products at very reasonable prices, and its nice to have the mens and women's sections on different floors.. And that is about it read more

I used to like this location a lot more (2008ish?). Now it seems sad and even more dis-organizaed than I thought possible. I've come here a few times looking for work appropriate pieces. Being downtown, you'd think they'd stock some good options. Not so much. It has more of a thrift store feeling now than a discount department store. Are their deals? Sure. But how valuable is your time? If you are a busy person, this Winner's is not for you because it seems like you have to hunt that much harder for the simplest of things. Sizes were all over the place and it seemed like the quality and style of the goods has gone downhill. One thing I did notice however is that there seems to be a nicer, more organized men's section now? So maybe if you are a guy or shopping for one you'll have better luck. I like Winners but I think I'll stick to the locations outside of the downtown core to make better use of my shopping time read more

This Winners is near my office and I scamper there about twice a week on breaks. Men love to shop to you know! There are some great deals to be discovered here. For example, I've purchased brand name jeans at 60% of the suggested retail price. In addition, I've found the exact same dress shirts for work I would find at the Bay next door for cheaper. This is usually why when I find something at the Bay, I go to Winners to see if I can get it there. And, now I am probably sharing something with you a little more personal than you might like, I buy my Calvin Klein underwear here for a fraction of the retail price. And just for the record, CK doesn't define me as a person it's just comfortable! I will say, however, it's far from a sure thing that something will catch my eye at Winners. The majority of the clothes are things I wouldn't ever consider wearing. For example, there were a pair of neon blue and orange swim trunks that hurt my eyes to look at. It was almost as if my vision had been psychologically violated! Some of the dress shirt designs scare the crap out of me. Who wears a pink checkered dress shirt? Seriously? The misses are almost as fun as the hits! The service is good significantly more times than it's not. It's also a great way to unwind for 30 minutes. This store is one of my favourite places to explore, but it's nature is such that you won't find something all the time! If you are looking for sure hits, your better bet is head to the Core and Bay just next door west. But it's going to cost you. read more

Winners is a store that offers name brands and designer clothes and shoes at a 20% - 60% discount. They also offer housewares, toys and toiletries. This location doesn't carry much for kids items, likely because the location isn't really in a handy location for moms and tots. That crowd is more likely to hit the suburb located Winners. (Of which there are plenty!) Not everything is an amazing deal, but there are incredible finds to be found. Like this time I found a pair of Calvin Klein jeans for $39.99. The same pair of jean would have cost more like $100 in a mainstream store. ...and believe me when I say it is so worth it to buy designer jeans - it's like you get a butt makeover when you wear good quality, well-designed jeans... read more

I feel the need to tell all about the HORRIBLE service I received at Winners. Let's start at the beginning: I found the phone "Samsung" that someone lost/left it behind in the shoe department, I took the phone went to the jewelry counter gave it to the lady and she said thank you, as I saw her taking it to the front tills (I'm thinking they will page over the intercom) if anyone lost their phone to come to the front and get it. 10MIN went by and no PAGE, So I went to the front and asked why this wasn't done, she told me they don't do that I asked her If I could talk to the manager, they called up the manager after me telling my story (SHE tells me she's not a manager her name was AMY.M that she was only a supervisor and she will call manager now OMG bunch of liars. Finally the "Real Manager" comes out and I told her the same story bla.bla.bla I found a phone and they didn't page the person to the front, She gives me this speech that anyone can come up and grab the phone, NO that's not true. Before giving the phone to a stranger: ADVICE 1.ASK what kind of phone it was, 2.ASK what kind of photo on screen saving there was? (Which there was one with couple on it) 3.ASK if it had a cover on 4.ASK them to log in to the phone The manager is trying to tell me if I was picking my own phone I wouldn't know the password "SHE is not that bright after all. Its common sense I don't know where you got your "Manager position" but you are not very bright (apologies for saying that), both of them the supervisor and the manager just stood there and laughed at me, I told them if I lost my phone I would appreciate it back. I wouldn't be surprise me if they kept the phone to themselves. read more

Winners downtown has gone through a renovation. The store has a better layout now, but they have lost their plus sized section. Now if you would like to find something plus sized, you have to go to the end of every rack and see if an item is there. I found ONE sweater in the entire store. So disappointing. I'll shop there for other things, but I will go to the other Winners locations for plus sized clothing. read more

This Winners is located in the downtown core, and despite it's big footprint and two floors it feels cramped in comparison to other locations. It is largely geared towards women, what with the first level being dedicated to a massive collection of shoes, purses, women's and young women's clothing. The upstairs has the Men's clothes, women's plus sizes and lingerie, some dresses and household items. As Winners is a discount store, they have a lot of crap. Just because the price tag says it is $20 off does not mean you would actually ever pay that much more for it. It has a solid collection of fashionable clothes hidden among loosey blouses and ill-fitting pants. I am a big fan of their purse and shoe sections, as it is possible to find some really nice designer brands (Betsey Johnson, Dolce and Gabbana) side by side with some really ugly finds. Rich leather hobo bags and studded wallets are also quality finds. The clothes require a lot more patience. If you have the time and the energy to dig for deals, Winners has some great savings on beautiful designer clothes, shoes, accessories, housewares and toiletries. But the mounds of ugly surrounding them get discouraging mighty fast. This location in particular is focused towards young - middle professionals, aiming to hit all of their accompanying needs. read more

A great store for the women, the whole upper floor just devoted to them, other than a small area for home decor and trinkets. Washrooms upstairs, albeit only one at a time. As usual, you really have to find your size, always deals here. read more

I feel the need to tell all my fellow Yelpers about the HORRIBLE service I received at Winners yesterday morning. Let's start at the beginning. I got there right at 9am, supposedly when they open, and I watched as the employees sat around on the counters and chatted in what seemed to be a staff meeting. It was freezing outside and considering it was 9am I was expecting the door to open any minute. I waited and I waited. I watched as one by one, the employees noticed me standing outside, and one by one, they peeked their heads around and just stared. You'd think someone would have come to my rescue, but nope. They just continued sitting around on the counters and occasionally looking back to see if I was still there. I finally got inside at 9:10am (which SUCKS because by this point, I'm late for work) and I told them I had to return an item. The assistant manager said "Malcolm will help you on the other side". So i walked around to the other side and I stood at the cash register waiting as Malcolm tried to figure out how to put his 'Winners' apron on. Finally, Malcolm looks at my item and says "You're returning this? You cut off the tags". I'm like "Yeah, but I bought it 12 hours ago and it doesn't say on the receipt anything about keeping the tags on". He lost it on me. He angrily pointed to this sign that Winners has that states their policy. He's all like "You cut off the tags! You're not supposed to cut off the tags. We don't return items with the tags cut off." Finally he said "Fine, this ONE time, I'll do it, but never again". He was BY FAR one of the rudest people I have ever dealt a minute after opening. Finally he finished punching away at the register, shoved the receipt and cash on the counter and completely ignored me. I grabbed it and left the store immediately. I will never, not EVER, step foot inside this Winners again. Their service is atrocious and I urge all my fellow Yelpers to pick any place to shop but this one. read more

The other day, I walked in the store at Winners Downtown, and after doing my shopping I was ready to pay. As I was waiting in the line, I could see that one of the employees, probably a manager that yelled at another employee. In my opinion, this type of attitude should not be tolerated in the store. It was so embarrassing to see such manager's behaviour. Even if she was the manager, there is no excuse for such scenes in front of the customers. These situations tell a lot about the store and the kind of service they provide. I really enjoy shopping at this store, but I was so disappointed after seeing what happened. I hope it brings to the manager attention, so they change the way they treat their employees. read more
