I don't begin to understand what the appeal of this store is. As long as I can remember, all the girls I know would die to get to this store. We'd even take road trips across the border just to experience all that is Forever XXI. I didn't get it then, and I sure as heck don't get it now. Forever XXI is a mix between H & M and American Apparel. The clothes are designed for young, hip girls, and are supposedly sold at ridiculously cheap prices. I figured I should TRY to understand this store, so I recently went shopping at it and I now officially know that I have reason to not like it. The clothes are so ridiculously cheaply made it's not even funny. I bought a shirt for around $20, which really isn't all that cheap, and speaking of cheap, the belt loop hole fell off the second I took it out of the bag. I then tried it on, and noticed that the stitching is already coming undone!!! What a piece of crap. I didn't bother to take the shirt back because I didn't think it was worth me driving back to Balzac, but I did make a mental note to never shop at Forever XXI again. read more

I'm gonna just straight out admit it: I loved this store vicariously through my friends. For whatever reasons, I had never actually been inside but I had heard excellent things. I hyped it up hardcore, but didn't actually visit until recently. "Yes!!", I had thought "I'm gonna drop so much money here it won't even be funny!". I was really happy that there was now a store relatively close by. Well, post-visit run-down: Not that impressed. The store was huge and filled with cute things, but their selection of XS-L on every single item of clothing, including pants and skirts left me unimpressed. Last time I checked girls came in more than 4 cutout sizes. I did like the selection. I spent a good hour going through about half the store. It is very avant-garde, wear until the season is over and discard clothing. Definitely for young fashionistas. Lots of really short skirts. Knee-length appears to be a conservative myth among the staff. No quality to speak of, but then you get what you pay for. Most everything falls within the 15-40 range, which is pretty damn good! I left empty handed (well, ok, I succumbed to the accessories) and a little disappointed. It is cute, maybe next time when I'm not holding back I'll fare better. Smart set, Ricky's, Le Chateau and Suzy Shear better watch out, enter XXI Forever. I was taken there a couple of weeks ago at the only location near Calgary. At the Cross Iron Mills Mall is a very large outlet , I cant even finish shopping a quarter of this store in 2 hours simply because there are so many great things to choose from I am not sure where this franchise is from but what I do know is that they have hired excellent designers. I was working with upper end fashion designers in Mexico and XXI has I must admit really up to date, hip, urban and oh so fresh but for so much little than what I usual expect. So expect huge dressing room and cash line ups. People there don't seem to mind, they are getting amazing fashionable products for more than 50% less than what they would buy at a specialized boutique. My only criticism is that there is only one store and it is god knows how far outside of Calgary; I believe even in another township which is Balzac. They need to improve on their jewellery design; it is really cheap and tacky plastic. read more

The first time I was in a Forever 21, was in the Edmonton location and I feel in love. Then when I found out both Cross Iron and Chinook were getting a store, I was beyond excited. I liked the layout of the CIM location much better than Chinooks. Much more space to move around and better organized. My only problem is with their staff. I find when store hire much younger staff (15-18 yr olds) you dont get the best customer service, as most of them are just in it for the extra cash or discounts. I also find their store can get very messy due to the fact that they have alot of shoes and accessories just laying on tables. read more

I know that disposable fashion is the huge ethical issue du jour... but I still love Forever 21! I discovered Forever 21 as a teenager from BC on a trip to West Edmonton Mall. Suddenly I found myself in a world of Christina Aguilera-inspired minikilts and four-dollar cleavage-baring tops. Much to the disdain of my parents, I loaded up my suitcase with slutty apparel that saw me through my early clubbing days. Now I am much older and wiser... and much closer to Forever 21! Luckily Forever 21 seems to have adapted with the times, and while there is still lots of cleavage-baring apparel there are also clothes that would be perfectly appropriate in church on Sunday morning. The clothes are still made from cheap materials and construction isn't always the best (check for ripped seams, loose threads, fraying hems, etc. before you get to the register!) but they're SO CHEAP. I recently picked up a cute little cardigan for about $15, as well as two cocktail dresses for less than $30 each. I find the best time to hit "XXI Forever" (as they try to brand themselves) is around dinner on Saturday, when most shoppers have gone home. One caveat: While disposable fashion IS a serious ethical issue and one that you should consider before shopping, there are also other things to consider when browsing at Forever 21. Flip your shopping bag over and you'll find a Bible verse- the owners of the company donate heavily to anti-choice religious charities (oddly, they do this while also engaging in business acts that have led them to be charged with multiple counts of copyright infringement...). read more

I have to admit I was excited about the arrival of Forever XXI in Calgary. The first week it opened I went with my girlfriend to check it out. The store is massive! I didn't know where to start! They seem to have sections through the store, even though it looks more like organized chaos. I browsed through pretty quickly. Trends are the name of the game here, this is where you go to buy something that will most likely be out of style in 3-6 months. That's why it's good it's cheap! Their jean sizes are pretty good, I actually like the fit of the skinny styles because they aren't skin tight and not too low! They have a huge collection of accessories, some of the necklaces and rings can be really nice, others cheap like their price. They can alos have some great shoes, if you can find your size. They do have a small section of guys clothes. I really like the decor of the dressing rooms, very boudoir! I ended up walking out of there with only a few items. Most of the clothing just doesn't seem age appropriate for myself, but they can some some more classy pieces. It definitely is a place to go find some party clothes! You can shop online too! I enjoy shopping at Forever XXI, but I get my fix pretty quickly. Its a fun store to check out, just allow yourself lots of time and don't bring your boyfriend or spouse. Trust me you will have more fun and he will be thankful! read more
