The Windsor Hotel is a very family friendly hotel. It's the sort of place you'd go to have dinner with the family. That's pretty much how I ended up going to this place. I walked into the restaurant area which was filled with pensioners and families. The only other main area appears to be a pokies... yay... there's nothing more boring than pokies... Give me a good old fashioned arcade machine any day, a machine that actually requires a bit of skill to use and isn't just mind numbing button pressing. Anyway, that's my opinion. The food was pretty competent. I've had better, but I've had plenty worse. My steak was a bit redder than I would have expected medium/well done steak to be. I wasn't too bothered, it wasn't worth complaining about. The salad bar was average, but the vegetables were dry and the potatoes very brown. I didn't bother trying them, but my partner said they were OK. Overall as I said earlier, it's competent. I wouldn't say no to going again, but I wouldn't go out of my way.

Hmm, terrible food, stir fry is swimming in a soy sauce soup. Frozen fish overcooked. Chicken Kiev raw, had to send back to kitchen to be cooked. Do yourself a favour, go somewhere else.

Mmm chicken schnitzel with garlic cream sauce

I visited on a Friday night as part of a bridal party rehearsal dinner - the wedding was very close by the following day. We booked well in advance for a table of 15 and we really need not have bothered, the rest of the dining room had maybe 3 other occupied tables. Food was as you'd expect after taking a look around the empty dining room. My steak was over cooked and drowned in an overly sweet smoky bbq sauce even though sauce was requested on the side. This gets a 3 because the cover band playing in the front bar were actually pretty awesome and entertaining. Our group was by far the youngest clientele this local had seen in a long time, we had an oldie come up and ask us to pose in a photo with him that's how novel we were. Can't say I'll be back in a hurry.

However, despite having to weave my way through countless people to get the the bar, I still really liked this place, especially the rural setting just ten minutes drive out from Salisbury. The beer garden is especially nice, as is the view over the vineyards out the back.

Behind the permanent fixture of the icecream and donut fixture, up some brick stairs (watch out for loose bricks), above the rubble and wild greenery that is the Brickworks, is the Brickie's Beer Garden. Inside there is a shabby old stage, some wooden tables and benches, and what looks like the dodgiest speakeasy this side of Ho Chi Minh. It sort of just an open air corrugated iron shed - hence the term 'beer garden'. Out the back is an outdoor setting with more tables and chairs under the sun. Vines wrap around the supporting beams inside and out. Behind the stage is a big hand painted sign saying 'BEERGARDEN', with palm trees and an oasis horizon. If you're there on a Sunday afternoon a bunch of elderly rockers are likely to be playing classics from beyond the grave. It's surprisingly enjoyable. Behind the bar is loads of strange ephemera - photos of performers and patrons and ancient Coopers promotional junk. Oh and some fuzzy headed bartenders. The folks here are real nice, if a bit toasted. Some friends decided they should try and play some gigs there, but talking to the staff was mighty confusing. I reckon the Brickie's Beergarden is a real find. A pleasant place with a big ole outdoor setting, deserted on a Sunday, perfect for a few beers after playing soccer at King's Reserve. There is no EFTPOS, so bring cash.

It's hard to pin down the ambiance as the areas of the Hotel differ; all in a good way. The "BAAA" is a great example of rural Australian bars: happy and inviting with live bands often playing. Meanwhile, it's eclectic and relaxed in the penny bar area, and the beer garden has a family friendly vibe. The standout for me on this visit was the dining area. It's relaxed but more restaurant than pub-like; in a good way. The service was very good, the staff friendly and prompt. But the best thing was the food. As long as you are happy to go beyond today's typical Australia pub food, and instead try some gourmet style traditional pub food. I had the slow cooked lamb shoulder with vegetables and light jus, while my partner went for the Mediterranean Chicken salad. Both were excellent, but the lamb was next level. Despite being well satisfied we could not resist the sticky date pudding. And we weee both happy we did not. Great experience all-round. The prices are higher than pub meals, but for that you get gourmet food that you will remember for a long time. Worth the little extra for sure.
