Working alone from home during the pandemic, I had recently moved to New York, only to find my couch stained by the moving company. Despite the company's high rating, the technician's behavior was concerning. Initially friendly and professional, the technician's accent made it difficult to understand him clearly. I had a line me chair that also needed to be cleaned but he said it couldn't be. His explanation however shocking as he mentioned that linen could not be professionally cleaned, recounting a personal anecdote of sexual fluids from his girlfriend about his own linen couch stain. Feeling uncomfortable, I made excuses to avoid conversation but he insisted to show me the phone with pictures of his couch. He kept staring at me trying to see my reaction but I quickly excused myself and reached out to a coworker to call me immediately providing a sense of support during the encounter. He was buff and I just prayed for him to finish the job and leave already. Reflecting on the incident, I realized the discomfort it caused me and felt compelled to share my experience. It's disheartening to encounter such unprofessional behavior, especially when seeking assistance with a service. I called to see if we were in Powell's service area, and was told that we are. Gary came out to visit our property in mid October. He spent no more than 15 minutes at the house, most of which was spent standing next to his truck. He measured for gutters (a secondary request) and didn't bother to climb up on our roof to see for himself what was going on (we have significant flat roof components that can't be seen from the ground where the leaks are). After not hearing anything back via email or phone for weeks, I called and spoke with Powell's staff on FOUR separate occasions over the course of months after the visit to try to get the estimate that was promised us or any indication of next steps. Each time, the same person answered the phone and acted surprised, that Gary hadn't gotten back and that she would text/email/call him and make a note in his calendar for him to return our calls. Here we are in January, and we have come to terms that Gary has totally ghosted us. No email, no text, no callbacks, no returned voice messages. Just nothing. Who's Gary? He owns the company. One would think that an owner of a local business, particularly one with his name on it would be responsible enough to return a potential customers' (multiple) follow-up calls. It's either a sign that this business is disorganized, disrespectful of clientele's time or both and if they can't do the basics, I am not sure they can be trusted to do a job on a roof. As new-to-the-area homeowners, we have contacted many, many other companies for various work around the property and even in the wake of storm Ida, even though we had to wait a few weeks for an initial appointment due to backlog, every single other company got back to us without issue. And for a direct comparison, I reached out to another local roofing company and the gentleman who showed up to assess our home spent about 2 hours at our home inspecting the roof and siding. He actually climbed up a ladder, took pictures of trouble spots on our roof to show us, provided a detailed summary of what he found and what work he recommends we perform over the next several years, carefully prioritized and reasonably priced. They didn't clean or abate lead. The included photos show the swiffer pads we used AFTER they "cleaned". We had the apartment tested for lead after they left and 12 out of 17 samples were significantly higher than Federal EPA standards allow (aka failed). Photo of test results attached. Before they say "we searched our database and he isn't a client", my building manager hired them. As proof, I'm including the waiver they tried to get us to sign.

The management wasn't easy approving Gotham, and I am putting it lightly. They found an obstacle over an obstacle. But Jasmin and Luis would not give up on me. Finally, we got the approval, and work started. Luis and his team not only demonstrated their exceptional professionalism, but they also earned my trust in a remarkably short time. I felt so secure in their hands that I was comfortable leaving them to work alone. Even when the cabinet company (KraftMaid, via HomeDepot) sent a few damaged cabinet doors and a cabinet base, Luis and his team were there, accommodating every time another door arrived damaged. Aside from that, this is an old building. It is amazing that it is standing because not one wall is straight, nor the floor or the ceiling. You will not see any of that when you look at my kitchen. Luis and his team managed to "camouflage" it. My budget and the final approval would not allow for any major wall changes besides plastering. They also replaced my floor from tile to parquet-looking. There was an issue with leveling with the saddle of the living room floor, but they worked it out amazingly, too. So thank you, Gotham Builders of NY. I enjoy looking and cooking in my new kitchen.
