This bar is in the parking lot for an airfield and across from what was the Swarovski factory, and the bar definitely has a fair amount of airplanes. They also have a dart board with two tables in between, and a pool table. The ambiance is a little dark, but that may to be to help keep it cool in the summer. Outdoor tables seemed to be available for days when Connecticut wasn't sharing temperatures with Hades. Our waitress was friendly, and the menu (non-bar) was short. Some friends of ours recommended this place as a locals bar where most folks know each other. So we tried it today around 3 pm (Thanksgiving). First impressions weren't impressive. We weren't greeted for a bit, we were seated at the small bar. The bar has a fireplace which was nice but needed some deep cleaning as the glass doors were in deep need of a good windexing. Most patrons seemed to know each other which shows loyalty, so huge plus. Anyone can miss cleaning the fireplace. The female bartender never introduced herself or welcomed us, even though I mentioned it was our first visit. A local told us her name is Paula, and she was just concentrated on keeping things going and tidy. Ok, we appreciate that. We ordered wings and pepper poppers. The wings had little flavor and sadly the poppers (had to ask for ranch dressing) came out of the fryer without the cheese being melted. The bar doesn't have any Tabasco to offer guests, only franks buffalo sauce. With this said, as we were here longer, Paula warmed up to us and was much friendlier. Our overall feeling is this is a place to get to know your local buds and enjoy a cool one. Not the best first impression but we will try it again and update our experience. The restroom was clean and the overall vibe was positive. It's a place you wouldn't know is there as not really visible going down the road. Check it out. I feel it's worth giving it a try. Boneless pork rib sandwich at the Windsock. This is a masterpiece of a sandwich. Not a chopped extruded pork patty, rather it is a short rack of pork ribs that has had the bones removed. This boneless slab is served on the modern equivalent of a Kaiser roll, it has a layer of lovely sweet and spicy vinegar based Cole slaw, and a few crispy fried onion rings on the sandwich as well. Salty, sweet, crunchy, and decidedly very porky. This was a compete dish, no other accoutrements were required! I am hopefull that this offering will reappear on the special menu occasionally. read more

Wow, this little hole in the wall really blew me away! This really brings meaning to never judge a book by its cover, but I knew we were in good hands. Once you got here midday, and you saw the bar packed with all timers and a few of their tables taken. This place sits on the outskirts of an airport, so you do see planes, takeoff, and lands which adds to the experience. The white staff is friendly, accommodating, and super attentive. Their offerings very daily, but they always seem to have roast beef and a special soup of the day. The meals themselves are super affordable, extremely feeling, and amazing. The day we went, we tried the Boston roast beef sandwich, which was served on a fantastic row that was just the perfect amount of thickness to complement the meat. I tried the Porchetta sandwich which was delicious while being flavorful and moist and the perfect amount of spice with a cherry peppers, both the soup which was creamy broccoli, cheese, and the corn beef. Reuben eggrolls, knocked it out of the park! The dessert was probably the one disappointment, but I'm not taking down stars to their rating because the mail itself was really amazing. I look forward to coming back here and trying more of what they have to offer... Clearly the old timers know a good place and clearly I will definitely follow their lead. read more

I've been there many times. The past 3 not so great. Yesterday. Terrible. Ordered a Pastrami Sandwich which came in a paper tray. It smelled like 2 days past. I asked the server to smell it and he said it was fine. I took it home for the raccoons. I opened it today and it smelled worse than yesterday. Not looking to argue, just paid. Not for us. Not friendly at first but warmed up somewhat later on. It seems it's one of those "Got to be a regular" kind of place. The Windsock Inn has reasonably priced food. I ordered a salad with chicken. Taste was just standard. But the wings and chili? The wings were not breaded, but were perfectly crispy and the Thai Chili sauce was just perfect and not too wet. I usually eat my wings with a fork and knife because I want to, , also I don't want to burn my fingers or get too much sauce under my fingernails, especially while playing pool. That chili? DELICIOUS. Just enough heat and it comes in the perfect small sized cup for the diner who likes to order more than one item off of the menu without getting full too fast. My husband and I use to come here like 15 years ago, loved it, my dad would bring me here when I was a kid because he flew planes out of the airport and we'd eat lunch here. So we wanted to go out last night, decided to stay local, and I said what about the Windsock? Well after 15 years was just as much fun. They have a dart board, pool table and karaoke on Sat night. Didn't have any food, but since it's family owned and operated by the same family for over 40 years, I can say from past experience the food is good too. Great prices on drinks and food. A nice crowd, mixture of people of all ages, regulars, new comers and people who haven't come in 15 years! How is it I've never reviewed the Windsock before now? What a mistake! This place is wicked awesome!!!!! First, the prices are decent. The place is as casual as it can get and very comfortable. The people working here could not be more friendly and there is plenty of close parking, a decent jukebox, satellite TVs and tremendous food. Tremendous food? In a small, divey joint like this? Oh yeah! This is the best burger in town, the best dog in town, the best sandwich in town, the best chili in town, the best stuffed cabbage in town, the best corned beef in town... etc. But there's a trick to it. You have to go with whatever they are serving that day. There's no fixed menu. If Jeanie is cooking there is a lot of variety. Some of the others limit their offerings to things they do best. The pizza's are typical frozen bar pies. They are fine, just not something the Windsock makes. See if they have hot dogs and if so, get them with chili and cheese. See if they have cheeseburgers and if so, get them with L/T/Mayo and maybe some onion. See if they have corned beef or pastrami and if so, get a sandwich. This is my favorite place to eat this type of food in Stratford followed closely by the Ale House and Danny's. Don't miss this one! Its a dive but a comfortable dive. Nice flat panel displays, mixed with a floor that is old wood planks and is uneven. It has a pool table in the back, and the original wood stove that they used to cook on as a planter. Drinks are cheap and ice cold. Everyone is cool and fun. Clientele runs from local folk, and laborers in flannel shirts, old timers, then with the private hangers next door you get the pilots that fly 30 million dollar jets that filter in and have a few pops too! The have their own sweatshirts for sale that are good quality and have a cool WWII fighter airplane Corsair (which used to be built around the corner) on the back. read more

I decided to venture out to the Windsock on Saturday night for their weekly Karaoke show hosted by Dave Antonio. While enjoying a delicious cocktail prepared by the lovely owner Jennifer, the delightful aroma of another customer's chicken wings and onion rings caught my attention. When I inquired how his meal was he reported that everything was "delicious!" I looked at the menu and decided to order the fried clam strip sandwich. Happened upon "The Sock" back in 1981, when I worked around the corner at "Charter Arms Gun Factory". Jeanne & Jim Boone had just started running the place a few years earlier, and although we only had a 30-minute lunch hour at the factory, the Boone's would have 4 hot & delicious dinners & "beverages" on the table waiting for us. At the time, they even would cash our paychecks! Hadn't been there again until 2000, and although I was basically a stranger, all the workers and "regulars" made me feel right at home! The food is ALWAYS incredible and SUPER REASONALY PRICED! The "downloadable" jukebox has an eclectic mix of tunes from rock to rap to Big Band, and "Jen-The-Bartended" can do quite an awesome jitterbug! LOL! There's a pool table, electronic golf machine, electronic darts, and a couple more electronic games, plus weekly "Texas Hold 'Em" and "Scrabble". But be forewarned, "Jen" is RUTHLESS when it comes to winning at anything! LOL! Occasionally there are "live bands" or "karaoke" on weekends. Especially LOVE the stunning amount of "Chance Vought" and "Corsair F4U" fighter plane info they have displayed on the walls. My Mother, Stella, along with her Sisters, Jean & Mary, were the FIRST gals hired to be "Rosie-The-Riveters" in February of 1942, and spent World War II assembling SEVEN PLANES PER SHIFT! So to have the sign and T-shirts proclaim: "Windsock Inn & Corsair Lounge" makes me proud to remember what my relatives did to help save the world over 70 years ago.
