Recently, I was in Canadian Tired and was appalled by the lack of customer service and aggressive behaviour of staff over leaving my bags at the door. So "no thank you" to corporate hardware services, hello local retailers! This was a tiny place packed with all sorts of items. The staff was interested in helping me find a solution to my problem I was seeking to repair. I watched as they had a rapport with other local businesses and took careful time to discuss how to handle a 'rodent problem' with a neighbour. You only build that kind of trust and rapport by treating people kindly and with care. Discussing the various options including poison was an overheard conversation, but it was telling to me. Customer service is the bread and butter of the retail industry and a good measure of the trustfulness that one can have with a business owner who is attentive and caring. I'm definitely coming back with my business to this store, even though the corporate hardware option is closer.

They also have great deals around Boxing Day, as we are usually in Toronto around Christmas. An oldie but a goodie, a great local neighbourhood hardware store.

It has been a long time since I was able to walk into a store, ask some questions, and get an…read moreextremely knowledgeable answer. Here was the problem: I needed a BBQ. Here was what I was thinking: I wanted a Weber. Within a few minutes, they walked me through the different Weber grills, explained the advantages of the different types, and we decided that I didn't need the most expensive one. In fact, I could save a few hundred dollars by buying a much cheaper version. And, so I did. I asked how much it would cost to ship it, and how much it would cost to have it assembled. They told me that they did it all for free. Checking a few competitor prices to see if they just folded those costs into the price of the BBQ I was astonished to discover that, no, they did not! This was a free assembly and delivery. That right there is a two hundred dollar value, at the best of times! So now, a few weeks later, I'm BBQing chickens like a king, looking forward to tasty treats all summer long, and I know exactly where I'll go when I need anything else in the future!

Lots of street parking on Annette and also on nearby Jane Street in a lovely community of stores, restaurants and services. Very reasonable prices and you can use the Home Hardware online search tools as well as going in the shop. If you can't find what you need or it's out of stock they always track it down for me. They have wonderful services as well including key cutting and paint mixing and great advice.

I opted to visit the nearest location to me, and when I arrived a man took me to the area where they carried different types of filters. When I mentioned I needed the specific filter I'd found on their site, he simply said "You can't expect us to carry everything our website lists!" Fair enough, I thought, but how do I get the item then? I wanted to support this little local Canadian company over the big American guys, so I asked how I'd find the item; could we see if they carried it elsewhere? "No" he said, "We don't carry it. I don't know what to tell you." I left the store. I was frustrated certainly. This system seemed terribly flawed, and with each Home Hardware branch being independently owned, there seems no central governing body to ensure this type of glib service doesn't occur. Today I went back to that same store. I didn't want to give up hope on my locally owned Home Hardware store. After all, as far as I knew it was only the one bad seed! :) When I arrived at the store, the gentleman assisting me was initially somewhat helpful. He took me through the types of paint I was looking for and helped me pick out the right one. As he was mixing the colour I selected I told him about my visit 3 days earlier. He seemed totally uninterested. He said nothing at all initially. I told him I wanted to support the store but that the central online system seemed flawed. He replied, "Nothing I say will make a difference" and grabbed my things, walking past me to the front counter. He was brisk; wanted to simply get rid of me I suppose. I asked his name, and he told me "Marty." He then said he was the owner. I nearly fell over. I asked, "Shouldn't you take more of a vested interest in this?" Perhaps I caught him on the wrong day, because he actually began yelling: "What the F do you want me to do lady? What the F are you expecting?" I nearly fell over. As he continued to scream, I stepped backwards toward the exit. I began walking away from the store, a bit shaken. Moments later Marty was chasing me down the street! Amidst neighboring retailers and shoppers, he was screaming "F-U Bitch!" again and again. He continued to chase me until I threatened to call for help, and only then did he return to his store, angry that I didn't purchase the can of paint despite his temper tantrum. (Marty should've waited until after my purchase to lose his marbles.) The really sad addition to this story is that the young gent behind the counter didn't even seem shocked. As the owner screamed, the young man simply processed the small can of paint as if nothing was happening around him. I called head office, but as I suspected, since the locations are privately owned there is no one to govern the behavior or set a standard for how each retailer operates. Marty can do whatever he wants, and I apparently have to accept being yelled at and chased down the block.

Free parking and lots on the weekend, it was busy for such a small space that sells only door hardware. I was hesitant to buy from them off Amazon as the prices were very good compared to other stores online or in store. I wanted to see it in person and touch the metal/rubber to make sure it would stand up to use. Anything that isn't a typical contractor door knob cost a small fortune, so to save any money you'll need to look around. Pocket door hardware is hard to find and can easily run $180-200 (handle/lock and extra for a side pull)for something so simple and usually special ordered taking 2-4 weeks. This store had the basics for what I needed (minus the side pull)and was ready for pick up, so I couldn't understand how the prices were great and quality was decent. Door stoppers, these are annoying to hideous but necessary evil in a house. This place has some sleek designs and colours that make it bearable and for prices just slightly above your typical home box store. Mary was helping us and she is so sweet, helpful and patient. It's a small room like a really big office so she was helpful yet giving us enough privacy to figure numbers and budget. They have a great return policy Incase you over ordered or change your mind, and she even emailed me a copy of the receipt. Would highly recommend this place to anyone needing trendy door hardware.

Man, talk about making something right when it never should have gone wrong in the first place!…read more Ok seriously .. and I do mean it - we came in to select a few sets of hardware for our entrance renovation project. We hadn't brought in photos of them, so the staff basically sold us the first things she guessed might suit us off the shelf. We did try to explain exactly what was needed, but she decided to just assure us everything was fine and that the piece we needed to wait for, was fine to sit outstanding, and she'd get back to us. (Ha.) Not Haha funny. We paid for everything using some 4squ text receipt. um ok I have no choice? Wtv we did a lot of research before coming here and hubbo insisted let's just get the s**t to get started and we'll worry about the bitty piece later. Well life also happens .. I called once or twice, idk when, and soon enough, my phone's dead and I have no access to the text, but obviously I have my statement (maybe not obviously these days?) and we pull it and all the pieces we hadn't used yet back in the boxes best we could, and we set over (admittedly recently, as I say, life happens) and lo and behold, I think that was the most amazing customer experience of my life!!! We walk in and yes, it looks nicer as they've made their own entrance renovations. Mary, the owner, listens very carefully to us as we explain the dilemma. She recognizes the handwriting on the boxes and doesn't even question us for the receipt. Then she gets down to business. AMAZINGLY. Omg this woman KNOWS her stuff. And she actually enjoys figuring out the problem at hand, you can see it. She goes over all kinds of mechanical issues (and hubbo wanted to send me in on my own, testament to his faith in me I guess) and then, she worries about the aesthetics; and gives us options all over again from scratch based on the huge inventory they have. Idk if I ever walked away from an interaction as relieved, elated, and genuinely FLOORED as that day. GO THERE. If you deal with Mary herself, you will. Not. Regret it!

Today, I visited the store to buy something, but when I arrived, the door wasn't locked and there was no one inside. I called out several times, saying "Hello, hello," but nobody responded. Concerned that something might have happened, I went a little further inside and called again, "Hello, is anybody here?" One of your staff members, a tall man, suddenly ran over and shouted at me, asking, "Why did you come in? If the lights are off, it means the store is closed." I apologized, explaining that I didn't know that, but he was very rude and told me to leave, saying, "The store is closed, get out of my store." However, the store was supposed to close at 5 p.m., and it was only 4:03 p.m. at the time. I waited outside for 2-3 minutes and then went back in to ask for the manager. The door still wasn't locked. When I re-entered, the same man opened the door, saw me, and immediately closed it again. I asked for the manager, and he claimed that he was the manager. When I asked for his name, he refused to give it to me. This is highly disrespectful to customers and reflects very poor service. I am considering filing a complaint with Human Rights regarding this issue. No staff member should speak to a customer with that kind of attitude. I look forward to your response and will be following up on this matter.
