Hands down the people to go to if you are a contact lens wearer. The regular eye exam was great, but it appears they really specialize in contact lenses here--I've never had such a thorough exam and fitting. I've been getting headaches from my contacts for years, and Dr. Deering seemed genuinely dedicated to fixing the problem. I'm now headache-free, and I learned all sorts of things about my eyes in the process! The people here are wonderful, and really go above and beyond. I used Winchester Optical exclusively for more than 23 years and was completely satisfied. Apparently they have changed their policies. When I bought an expensive set of frames and again when I went in to have them repaired I was assured they were guaranteed and it would not cost me anything to repair them. There was no charge when I went to pick up the repaired frames - but a month later they sent a bill for more than $100. Their answer : they are sorry I misunderstood their policy. Did. Not. Like. Them. Years ago - so maybe this ain't the best "first review" to have - they were horrible. I got my first contacts through these people. What a disaster. I almost don't want to talk about it. My eyes are pretty bad. Years ago when "oxygen-permiable" contacts were new - they set me up with some. They sucked. I had to go back continually to get adjustments, new perscriptions. Just horrendous. I'm not THAT blind and they were just clueless. Maybe it's better now. Technology has made this field idiot-proof. And they certainly have their share of idiots there. read more

I recently switched to Winchester Optical after many years of vision care with a well known doctor in Cambridge. I wear daily contacts or glasses, have had deteriorating vision for 10+ years, and astigmatism. I was having issues with my contacts being uncomfortable, and blurred/distorted vision at times, plus chronic dry eyes. The Deerings gave me an extremely thorough eye exam and contact lens fitting, and suggested some tweaks to improve my overall experience with both glasses and contacts. A week later, I have never had such clear and comfortable vision, both with contacts and glasses. The discomfort is gone, my vision is crystal clear, and I am an extremely happy customer! The office is very well run, the frame options are great, and they even set up the contacts to be shipped directly to my house. I can't recommend Winchester Optical enough. I used to work in Boston so my eye Dr resides there. Recently I've been looking to transfer to someone a little closer to home. A friend recommended this place to me and said she had been going for years. I had an excellent experience. It's a father-son team and they are very knowledgeable and thorough. Some of the tests performed have never been done on my eyes before w/ my previous doctor. They discovered I was actually in the wrong size contacts. The cost for the appt was much higher than what I was used to paying (you pay for the eye-exam AND the contact fitting). But all in all I felt it was worth it. Wow! I needed to get an eye exam and new contact lenses so I called Winchester Optical for an appointment. They are down the street from me and a neighbor had said good things so I thought I'd try them. The woman who answered the phone was informative and helpful. She was able to get me an appointment the next day. In the past my eye exams have seemed uneventful. Someone would spend 30 minutes with me, if that, and off i'd go with a new prescription. At Winchester Optical i think i had my first real eye exam. The Dr., who was kind, funny and informative, spent about 45 minutes to an hour with me. He had cutting edge equipment and took time to really find out about the health of my eyes while explaining what he was doing. Next up was the contact fitting. There were more machines and pictures of my eyes to make certain they were giving me the right fit. It took another 45 minutes. I had my 5 year old with me and she even enjoyed the experience. The staff couldn't be friendlier. Instead of just having me order my year supply on the spot they gave me a weeks worth of dailies to try and scheduled me a follow up to check how the fit and Prescription worked before having me place an order. I went back for my follow up yesterday. He spent another 30+ minutes with me to make sure everything was sitting well and helped me place the order. As long as I live in MA I will never go anywhere else. If you are looking for the best eye doctor and contact fit this is your place. ***Reasonably priced as well which is a bonus! read more

I have been struggling with serious vision issues for years and it was growing progressively worse. My last two doctors just kept renewing my old prescription because I was at least functioning with it. Finally, my old doctor told me that she couldn't help me because she didn't have the equipment to handle my vision issues. When I came here Dr. Deering examined my eyes and told me, "This is going to sound like bad news, but it's not." It turns out I had cataracts in both eyes. He reassured me that this was not a problem that could not be solved, calmed me down and helped get me on track to getting surgery. After the surgery in my right eye I came back and was fitted for a lens that gives me genuinely good vision. I will soon have surgery in the left eye and will see if I even need to continue to wear a lens in that eye. They spend a great deal of time with you and make sure the lenses they prescribe are suitable. Because of the cataract surgery I wear a multi vision lens in the right eye, which they worked carefully with me to make sure it really would help and not impair my close up vision. As someone who is now 50 and has been wearing glasses or lenses for 45 years, I cannot say enough good things about this business. They are passionate about what they do and endlessly patient with you. The contacts they chose for me are extremely comfortable and a perfect fit. I cannot recommend them highly enough. read more

Really, really happy customer. I've been going to Winchester Optical for about 20+ years. I've had eye exams, eye glasses, contacts, and really great sunglasses (with readers on the inside of the bottom - for the over 40 set). I wore glasses most of the time for optimal vision, but used the contacts for sports (swimming, skiing, etc). I had PRK eye surgery (similar to Lasic - yet quite different too) this year and recently got a new pair of glasses from Winchester Optical to tweak my vision to where I want it. Before the PRK surgery, I has a fantastic set of glasses that used some newer technology that provided clarity that I never had before, given the level of astigmatism that I had before the surgery. After the PRK surgery, I just got a basic set of lenses fit into my old frames. The staff is fantastic and amazingly customer oriented. I've never been pushed to buy the highest end when I don't need it. Although they do have all the latest cool stuff, like the sunglasses with a magnifier band on the bottom of the inside. Now I can read a book at the beach and no one can notice that the sunglasses are readers too. Helps me in continuing to lie about my age. I saw a couple of 'less than favorable' reviews and have to say that I just don't get it. Before the PRK surgery, I had horrible astigmatism and near-sightedness. I could not recognize my family from 10 feet away without glasses. As an engineer, I'm pretty fussy too. I've had 10+ pairs of glasses, 5+ pairs of contacts, 2 sets of readers, and several pairs of sunglasses from Winchester Optical and I'm delighted with them. read more

I have worn rigid gas permeable lenses for the past twenty years, and have had problem after problem with them. When I came to Winchester Optical for the first time a few years ago, my current pair was ill fitting and causing problems with my eyes and vision. John Deering was able to fix the problems immediately. The discomfort I'd been enduring because I thought I had no other choice went away completely. John was caring, extremely knowledgeable, and incredibly informative. I wish I had known about Winchester Optical years ago. Now I've been fitted for scleral lenses, and I think so far so good. I may be moving to Florida in a couple of years ... I think I would consider making trips up to Massachusetts just for the excellent care I've received with my contacts. My insurance does not cover very much of my visits with them, but the service is excellent and well worth the extra money. I highly recommend them. read more

I returned to Winchester Optical the next year and have been going to them since, which is over 20 years. Dr. Deering and John Deering are professional, smart, and take the time to make sure you have the best and most modern care and products possible. They both listened to my concerns and addressed them in a way which I understood and appreciated. I'd been having a specific problem which they were able to correct and my life has literally changed for the better. The cost of their contact lenses is reasonable and competitive with online prices.
