In A Nutshell:…read more -First Creek Trail is nice little out & back trail system 8 miles down the road, just outside Red Rock Canyon. -You will may see some wild donkeys grazing if you keep scanning your environment. -The trail is dog friendly. -You will engage in various terrain consisting of both desert, shrubs, trees & water in the creek. -The sound of fresh water flowing is nice, especially when you don't hear it over human voices. Overall, this is an easy hike to start your day off right.

DON'T miss your exit from the scenic loop route to get there.... Because it's a 1 way route (3rr exit). The hike takes around 40min-1hour to finish. For those who don't exercise like me, maybe 1-3 breaks would help but expect jelly legs half way there. Below are some instructions for myself that could be helpful to you. I posted photos from beginning of our drive, to the trail to Amazon end hike view. Fee at Entrance: $15 Vehicle. Takes credit card. No wifi reception at entrance gate for rsvp and during parts of scenic drive. Some patches of wifi. Scenic Loop Route to find your stop is one way 25miles-ish/40minutes-ish. So don't miss your in between destination stop. Can't go back. Exit 1: Calico I Exit 2: Calico II Exit 3: Sandstone Quarry (with Calico Tanks trail is the most popular/View of Vegas) Etc with other stops. There's 2 restrooms with toilet paper and maybe some sanitizer. Trail: Calico Trails to Sandstone Quarry. There will be signs or at se point just a bunch of rocks bundled to make a pole stand...follow those. There will be man made steps to areas that is harder to identify as a trail...so just use your best judgement on what works best for you to move forward/up. Sandstone Quarry's Calico Tanks is not for entry level. But it's possible with - breaks, - if you have the ability to climb/down climb - ability and being light foot would help (I'm clumsy). Coming from no exercise/hiking person....it's like a stair master situation, where your thighs will feel like jello. Canyonish hiking - Terrain changes from shards/pebbles to sandy, to boulders. - Rocks looks smooth and slippery but actually has sand paper grip here. - Easy chill beginning, middle stair master to light climbing boulders. Coming down requires more attention to not slip or mis-step. - The shade is very cool in temperature. Basically little to no shade. Secret little box of letters at the end. There is a pen and maybe some paper space. We had a Costco receipt, so just put our couples name and date of the hike. Enjoy!

Sandstone Quarry is one of the most popular stopping spots by tourists and locals. There is a…read morehistory to the area. There are several multi-ton blocks of sandstone abandoned when the third try at quarrying sandstone declared bankruptcy in 1912 and the quarry closed. The Bureau of Land Management contracted to have several parking areas and the Scenic Drive re-done at the Red Rock Canyon NCA. Sandstone Quarry was one of them. There are extra parking spaces that were added when the lot was enlarged. This is the starting point for 3 hikes or just a casual explore. You can hike the Grand Circle, Calico Tanks, or Turtlehead Peak from the lot. Unless you're doing the Grand Circle in sections, starting here is not a good idea. I have been to this area countless times to document Indian rock art and artifacts, to hike, or to just enjoy the explorations that can be done from here. The sandstone cliffs beckon and there's much to see. There is a pit toilet at the parking area.

Short Walk for a Single Sight…read more This is a short, clearly marked 0.1-mile trail located close to the picnic area and three other trailheads. The Sight: You walk to the end of the path to see the petroglyphs. It is just one small area on a rock; there isn't anything else to see. This walk is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. It's worth the 5-10 minute detour if you are already at the picnic area or finishing a nearby hike, but don't make it your primary destination.

The majority of people visiting almost always request an easy hike. This fun little jaunt is only one quarter of a mile. It leads you to a beautiful wall with petroglyphs and writings dating back 700 - 800 years ago from the Southern Paiute Indians. Everyone seems to really enjoy. It is easily located at the Willow Springs picnic area along with some other longer but great hikes. Be sure to check this hike out when visiting Red Rock Canyon.

I hiked Gateway Canyon today and there have been some changes to the hike as a result of the flash…read moreflooding that we had this summer and fall. It is a more difficult hike than it was. There was one area soon after entering the canyon that was an easy walk on the sandstone to get to the lower level. Now it's a butt slide you must do carefully. There was some sign that some have tried to do a walk around but we didn't check to see if there was another way. There's a second drop off that is problematic. The flooding washed some gravel from the base of the sandstone. We got around this by carefully climbing up some sandstone to bypass the difficult area. One of our group couldn't do that and she slid down the sandstone and landed on her shoulder. Just a bit sore. There are also some new places where boulders have been placed below to make the step down easier. I'm not sure I'd take friends from out of town on this hike unless another heavy rain changes things again for the better like it did once before. If you do this hike, do it carefully!

The 3-mile Kraft Mountain Loop, also called Gateway Canyon Loop, circumnavigates Kraft Mountain, that borders the north side of Calico Basin. The route starts heading northwest across desert flats on a use-trail. Following Gateway Wash, the route passes a few spots of easy rock scrambling and seasonal pools of water. Most of our exploratory was on the east of Turtle Head Peak in Upper Gateway Canyon Trail. This is not on the scenic route. Temperature: Same as Las Vegas Distance: 4-6 mile loop Elevation change: 600 feet Hiking time: 3-4 hours Elevation Trailhead: 3,700 feet Elevation Saddle: 4,300 feet

Make a reservation unless it is the summer…read more Tried to go here in February, but the scenic loop drive was fully booked. Came on a weekend in August instead. No waiting when the weather reaches triple digits. The view is stunning. Just did a short hike because it is hot, hot, hot in the summer. Make sure to bring plenty of water, a hat and apply sunscreen. Definitely worth a stop. Plenty of parking available in the summer. Bonus, no crowds! Note: Use your National Park Pass for admission and stamp your National Park Passport. Take pictures, leave footsteps.

I didn't think this was even possible to summit but we hiked and did scrambling up to Class 4. Amazing. Nice trails off the main highway on the way from Vegas to pahrump that are free to access and do…read morehave a restroom. The trails go for a bit and have beautiful views of the mountains all around. Overall, the trails are pretty flat and are in the easier side, with lots of grave/rocks though. Much of the hike is in direct sun, so be prepared for that if coming mid-day. The rubber ducky trail is off of here where you can see the tree decorated with rubber ducks. It's a bit silly, but is a fun draw for the area.

This is a great trailhead for those that are new to hiking or just love hiking in general. The trails are mostly flat that loops around (5 miles total) and you have amazing Mountain View's all around. It was really windy that day so because of this we didn't hike the whole 5 miles. Though I was wearing the appropriate shoes and had a full bottle of water and walking sticks on me, I still felt like I wasn't really prepared for this trail, since I had my hands full and I did not have a backpack on me. Though I live in Henderson, making the 30+ minute drive out of the city to hike Late Night was definitely worth it! While it was windy overall, the temperature wasn't too hot or too cold to hike.

More Like the Frontier's Edge Trail…read more    Situated in the southwest corner of the Las Vegas valley where the Mountains Edge Community merges with the open desert is a 1.26 mile mult-use paved trail. It is the Mountains Edge Trail. To me, it is the shining star of the Mountains Edge Regional Park which has kept me coming back for more hikes. It was only til recently that this became a separate Yelp listing from the Mountains Edge Regional Park. Prior to my most recent experience here I had checked in at the Mountains Edge Regional Park when I hiked on this trail.   The Mountains Edge Trail is an oval shaped trail with the lengthy segments traveling east and west. It is roughly bounded by Mountains Edge Parkway to the north, Buffalo Drive to the east, Cactus Drive to the south, and Durango Drive to the west. The main trailhead is by the playground near the northeast corner of Mountains Edge Regional Park. This is a relatively flat paved trail. My preference is to hike the trail clockwise. Hiking on it clockwise from the vicinity of the playground, the trail approaches a gentle curve transitioning it from an eastbound to a southbound direction. Approaching the curve there is a view of a church and gardens. The trail connects directly to the meandering trails of the garden. Being that it is an oval shaped trail it soon changes from a southbound to a westbound direction. The lengthy westbound segment of the trail is my favorite. Although there are new homes replacing acres of the desert, there continues to be breathtaking views of the desert reaching towards the mountains and picturesque nature frontier contiguous to Red Rock Canyon. The sinuous trail brings out the best of this frontier's edge vista. These smooth curves transition the trail scenery so that trail users like me are not constantly facing west. Development in the park has also transitioned the trail vistas. What had been open desert in the center of the oval is now a soccer field complex and parking lot. In a sinuous fashion the trail continues to meander westbound where the soccer fields revert to open space (for now). After this long and scenic segment, the trail follows Durango Drive for a brief distance. It soon changes to eastbound where it doubles up as a walking path for Mountains Edge Parkway. Headed back towards the playground there is a grand entrance view of the new soccer fields. Here there is a cool soccer ball sculpture and an abundance of parking. This alleviates the parking shortage that I experienced first-hand during peak times in the park. East of the new soccer fields, Mountains Edge Trail branches away from Mountains Edge Parkway into the main trailhead at the playground.   I am very impressed with the cleanliness and condition of Mountains Edge Trail along with the namesake regional park. Normally It is common to find some graffiti on signing and fixtures along hiking trails. Especially along segments in undeveloped areas. Not here! On a scale from 1 to 5 on "condition and upkeep" I awaard it 5 stars.   I started out the review with the heading "Frontier's Edge."  There is still enough connected undeveloped land south of the Mountains Edge Trail to connect it to the picturesque desert reaching towards Red Rock Canyon that would create a desert panhandle. As an avid hiker I hope that the powers to be create permanent open space bridging the trail to the desert. This panhandle of open desert would also connect it to the nearby James Brown Trail. Essentially the Mountains Edge Trail would connect to the true mountain's edge of the Las Vegas valley creating a hiking destination and better quality of life. Every time I hike on the Mountains Edge Trail the questions are "Will this be the last time that I will see this picturesque desert vista from the Mountains Edge Trail?" "The next time I hike here, will it be a desert oasis surrounded by the next wave of development marching towards the mountains?"    Whether it joins a panhandle of desert connecting to the frontier by Red Rock or surrounded by the next wave of development I recommend Mountains Edge Trail. Now for the ultimate hiking experience in Mountains Edge I recommend hiking the 1.24 Mountains Edge Trail with Shoelace Mountain in the close-by Exploration Park. In conclusion I give Mountains Edge Trail my 4 Star approval.

White Rock Loop is the most…read morerecent trail I've checked out and the difficulty rating is probably fairly accurate if you do the entire loop. Park at the first paved lot and walk to the trailhead, and take the one to the RIGHT (you'll return on the left). The trail is fairly well marked and has decent elevation gain, along with a variety of terrain from sandy and rocky to a more forested part of the trail around La Madre Spring- you can add on this steeper, rocky portion to amp up your calorie burn. The regular trail is a little over 6 miles, but with the walk to/from parking, the springs, and checking out the petroglyphs and agave roasting pit area (by the picnic area), the pedometer clocked closer to 9. The trail is easy enough but the while distance might be a bit much for kids or some dogs. Great views but lots of sun, so take a hat and sunscreen along with your water!

Very easy hike in the Red Rock Canyon national park. Great for families with young kids…read more Met up with a few friends for this hike on a nice weekend day. There is a nice clean outdoor potty at the trailhead to drop some weight before starting. The loop trial is about 4 miles long and take about 2 hours at a normal pace. The trail consists of mainly flat well trotted over sections with very few inclined sections. The view is better in the second half of the loop trial. Parking is usually very easy even on weekends as this is not a trial frequented by tourists.
