I went into this hair salon not too long ago, and requested a brunette color. I was so excited as I haven't been in the salon in over a year. I didn't know what I was doing, so I went with my gut and trusted the stylist. Big mistake! This was the DARKEST color I have ever had, and a month later it's still almost black. It was my fault I didn't bring in a photo, but still told her I wanted BRUNETTE. The stylist was sweet enough to fix it, and it did look a tad lighter but overall I am very unhappy with this outcome. Not only is this not the color I wanted, but it screwed up my hair completely and it's very dried out. Everyone I know says it is black, even after she touched it up! I am super disappointed as black is a very hard color to fix no matter where I go. :( The stylist herself is super sweet, but I am extremely disappointed with the color. You know the phrase, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"? Well, I did not heed this very important bit of advise and boy did I learn my lesson! One day my co-worker came in with a nice cut and color, and slapped a card on my desk offering $20 off a cut/color service at the salon she went to (should have been my first warning sign). Mind you my co worker has thin blonde hair, and I have a thick, long, mop of dark brown hair. With the tease of $20 off and a salon that was geographically more pleasant to me, where I didn't have to worry about parking downtown and taking out a college student in the process, I fell for it. Mind you, prior to this I was Becky with the Good Hair. This was all thanks to Dia Johnson at Willow. So my lazy, cheap self went to this "other" salon, and I will save you the long story, but it was the worst decision I have ever made! The girl ruined my hair. My hair was long, just a bit past my boobs, and I walked out of there with a glorified mullet that was only a few inches below my shoulders. Don't even get me started on the color. I had only wanted a few highlights to blend in what had grown out in the last 7 months since I had last had my hair done by Dia (I would like to mention it STILL looked good 7 months later, Dia is obviously that talented). When I left, it was bad. Brassy, splotchy, and when they tried to "fix" it, it was over-toned and green! Not to mention they tried to convince me it looked ok! I told myself I was going to live with it, then at work one day, while staring at myself in the flattering glow of florescent lighting, I freaked out and immediately decided to, with my tail between my legs, go back to the last place I had good hair. Willow. I called, desperate for a same day appointment. The salon owner, Nicole, graciously fit me in as her last client of the day for a consultation, so we could make a plan and calm my nerves. (Y'all I'm ashamed what a mess I was! Emotionally that is.) She took a look at my hair, told me a plan, and then said if I didn't have to be anywhere, she would be happy to get started on it today because she knew how upset I was. Needless to say, I LOVE MY HAIR, Nicole has given me life! I know this review is already so long, and I feel like I have so many more wonderful things to say about Nicole (and Dia), and frankly the whole salon. I was eyeing every girl that walked out of there and they all left with fabulous hair. The girls are all so nice and easy to talk to. I've learned my lesson the hard way and I won't be going anywhere else. I went in to this location just now and was curtly greeted by someone who said my colorist would be with me shortly. Mind you, I came in right at 2:30pm for my 2:30pm appointment, but still, somehow, was kept waiting. In advance of this appointment, I sent pictures to Courtney (the colorist) of my current hair color (dark brown) and a picture of what I wanted (copper/red hair). Granted, I understood that I was going from a dark brown to a copper color so it would take some time to complete this process, but I mistakenly presumed that because I sent pictures of my current hair color and the color I wanted well in advance of the appointment that Courtney would prepare/secure whatever was necessary to complete this for me. Finding someone to do your hair when you relocate to a new city is tough. In fact, it is so tough that after living here for nearly 2 years, I still hadn't found a new stylist... That is, until my appointment with Powell yesterday! Powell will have a loyal customer in me until the day I leave Charleston, and if I live within a 5 hour radius, you bet I will still make the trip up just for her. I have golden blonde hair that I had pretty much let go back to my natural hue over the course of the last several years - I was never happy with anything any stylist here in Charleston was able to do to the color or cut of my hair. Finally fed up with how boring I felt my hair to be, I went to Powell for an all over balayage to make me a bit blonder and my hair a bit perkier. Powell is meticulous with her work throughout both the cut and color. She really, really takes pride in every piece of hair that she paints, and you can sure tell the day after. She seriously is like a master artist of hair, it is ridiculous. Powell's prices are also very, very reasonable for a city like Charleston, where every salon charges you NYC prices but delivers you 2-star hair. I set up appointments for a portion of my bridal party/MIL to get their hair done. Called weeks in advance to make sure they would be able to accomodate (have enough stylist, etc.) I had six girls total and obviously were under a time restraint. I was told "absolutely" they would be able to accomodate and that they were "wide open" that particular morning and wouldn't be a problem. I was told there would be AT LEAST 2 stylist available for the up dos and one for make up. They were very helful on the phone & I was grateful they were able to accomodate. Well, fast forward to the day off. None of that was the case. They had 1 stylist for the 6 of my girls AND to top it off, they were taking appointments/walk ins IN BETWEEN the girls getting their hair done! Essentially making my bridal party wait. Total disaster. Horrible customer service. Finally, to top it off, they charged $65 for a BRAID for one of the Junior Bridesmaid. A braid that my 6 year old niece could have done. The quality amongst all of the bridesmaid was disappointing. Extrememly sloppy. They clearly didn't care about what they were doing. I live in Charleston. I actually WENT to this particular salon to get my hair done. I even (sadly) referred people because I saw the potential in my particular sytlist. Here's a tip....ask a local. I was shopping on King St. and asked some adorable 20-somethings at C.Wonder where to get a spray tan. They pulled out their ipad and looked up Willow and gave me the number. I called and they were able to fit me in. This spray tan is nothing fancy. It is essentially a tent in a supply closet, but the service was great, the lady doing the tan was quick and professional, and my tan looked phenomenal. If you need a quick spray tan, this is a great option. The location is just off King St, and it seems like they can take appointments throughout the day (my tan took less than 10 minutes and was done while her client's color was developing). read more

Being a repeat offender of trying to dye my own hair between seasons took me several terrible mistakes to finally realize I should just leave it to the professionals. I found just that with Lindsay at Willow. She was able to accommodate me immediately and worked for over 3 hours to correct the wannabe-Poison Ivy job I'd done to myself. She took the red out, gave me great highlights and now I feel great! The staff were all personable, funny, and very knowledgable. Easy parking and accessibility right off King. I have been going to this salon off and on throughout my three years of college but i will never be going back. In the beginning they were exceptional and had wonderful customer service but each time I went back things got worse. Today i went in for a simple trim. I had lovely wavy/curly hair that went past my shoulders and had a few layering issues but was overall great in my opinion. I asked the stylist for a trim and to fix my upper layers that had grown out. She seemed to understand what I meant, but when she had finally finished my cut she turned the chair around and I struggled to contain my emotions. She had turned my hair into a puffy bowl cut with lank floppy ends coming out the bottom on either side. There was nothing she could do to fix it having cut off too much from the top already. I left the salon with $50 less in my wallet and tears in my eyes. I expected a lot better from a salon that is so highly reviewed and in the downtown of such a fashionable city. read more

I was recommended to go to Willow Salon by two of my close friends. I walked in that day and scheduled an appointment for Friday morning at 10:00, which is the first appointment of the day. I showed up at 10:00am and not only was nobody there for my appointment, the salon was closed. I waited for 20 minutes and still nobody came. I called and discussed the confusion, and was set up with another appointment for Monday at 10:00am. I live out on Daniel Island so I left my house around 9:00 to attend this appointment. I received an informal text from my stylist, Lindsay, around 9:15 asking to cancel/reschedule the appointment. I had to call in two half days to work for this hair appointment and still was unable to get my haircut. This salon is inefficient, has no concern for their customers, and is unprofessional. I suggest choosing one of the MANY other salons in Charleston. read more

If you want to feel important to your stylist--don't go to Nicole. She quadruple-booked me with other girls and when she couldn't handle it she pawned us off on other stylists to finish what she was getting paid for. She was extremely pushy and basically forced me into layers that I repeatedly stated I didn't like and, no surprise here, I hate them. They look like someone took scissors to my hair and did a hack job. I was also unhappy with my color and called to set up a time so she could fix it. She ignored my call and didn't respond until I messaged her again 2 days later. I went in--to the time she suggested--and she told me she was too busy and blamed me for the entire thing. She also said that if I wanted her to fix what she did that I didn't like, I would have to pay her more money because she liked how it turned out and therefore, "[she] did her job right." I have never, in my 12 years of getting my hair colored, met a stylist quite so rude and unapologetic. Save your money. read more

I had my hair done here a little while ago and because of all the mixed reviews I wanted to leave my opinion. I am a younger girl (19) and I went to get a simple haircut. The salon was beautiful and the women were nice, however, my stylist (Katelyn) barley said a word to me. I work in a hair salon, and I would usually go there, but I am in Charleston for college and I desperately needed a haircut. I am so used to personable stylists, so when the only words that she spoke to me were "what would you like done" the entire visit, I was a little surprised. Nevertheless she was sweet, I don't think her quietness was to be rude, but it was just a little awkward...I gave this salon 3 stars as well because my hair was a little off. One side of my hair was visibly longer than the other and I was too uncomfortable to ask for her to fix it. (I ended up getting it fixed at another salon). Overall, I think this salon is beautiful and probably usually great. My friend got her highlights done here and they look amazing!!! Maybe the day I went was just a fluke. I don't know if I'd recommend the stylist I had, but everyone else seemed to be outgoing and great at what they do. read more

I have been going to get my hair (which is a thick, wavy, crazy mess if I let it go too long before a cut/style) done by Dia for years and she does an amazing job every time. I'm not going to pretend I know anything special about hair... because I don't... but she always knows what I want with my jumble of words remotely describing a style. I recently was married in Charleston and naturally I needed Dia to do my hair. I decided the week-of I was completely changing my hair style (she had also done my hair for my bridal portraits) and needed a keratin treatment. She set me up with some silky smooth locks and a trim and I was in love. With a small fee, Dia came to the venue where the bridal party/MOG/MOB were getting ready and she made everyone feel comfortable while we all got our hair done. I even had a flower crown and she helped to pin it in and get everything to where it would stay in place all night, tequila approved. read more

I was very excited to come in and get a refresh on my full set of highlights, as it had been almost 6 months since I last got my hair colored. Dia was very nice and listened to what I had in mind and did her best to create that image for me, but I wasn't happy with the finished result. I called the salon first thing the next day and expressed how I was feeling, and I was told that Dia wasn't in today and they would send my contact info over to her and she would be in touch. Not only was I told that only Dia would be able to consult me on how to proceed, but Dia texted me a brief message that said "wash your hair." When a customer is expressing disappointment about their hair, I would hope the salon would be eager for the client to be seen as soon as possible to come up with a game plan as to how to proceed. Extremely unprofessional and the customer service approach was not what I would have expected. I would have hoped that when a client calls to say they are upset, that the salon would have been eager to see the client as soon as possible. I ended up going to another salon to fix my golden yellow highlights and they were shocked when they saw the application style Dia did to apply these highlights. I would not recommend seeing Dia for highlights. read more

Don't waste your time. I went in for the keratin treatment I purchased through livingsocial.com. I checked in at the desk and was told to wait. 40 minutes after my appt time, the stylist asked my name and told me she didn't realize I was there. The girl at he desk laughed and said "Oh, I forgot to tell her you were here." I waited the three days you have to wait to wash your hair after having the keratin treatment and was terribly disappointed. I have had this process done many times and it eliminates all frizz from my hair. After washing my hair, there was all the frizz that I normally have. I called the salon for five days to speak to the stylist and never received a return phone call. I finally just drove down there to ask why my calls weren't returned. The stylist offered to do my hair again and said she thought she had used too low of a temperature on the iron that sets the keratin treatment in. I asked if she was using too little of the product or not leaving it in long enough. She said 15 minutes was enough time, so I gave up several shifts at work to have my hair done again. Same result after the second treatment. I called the keratin company to ask them about it and they asked how long the stylist had left it in. They said the minimum time was 30 minutes and that obviously enough product had not been used and that without using the correct setting iron, it would just wash out. I waited a week and went to the salon that normally does my keratin. It worked perfect with no problem. Daniel Island Salon does a fantastic job at a only slightly higher price. The stylist, who told me she had done tons of these treatments, obviously didn't tell me the truth. I am most upset about all the time I wasted giving her a second chance. I should have known once my phone calls weren't returned that this salon wasn't very professional. read more

I had a really negative experience, the girl made me far too blonde for my complexion and I had to have my hair corrected at another salon.

I had an appointment, but I waited for 30 minutes. I was also offered no greeting as I entered the salon. I began to fume after 20 minutes and left after 30. I will return to my regular salon that has friendly and talented staff-- very disappointing and a total waste of my time. read more
