Lava has always been on my radar...this salon opened in Avondale YEARS ago. I happened to be in town for the week and decided to book a haircut to try it out! The salon booked me with level 4 stylist, Amie. She is very personable and we chatted the whole time. All of the employees that work for the salon seem to enjoy the work environment and culture, which always makes the experience pleasant for customers. I was the only customer in the salon for the majority of my cut--wouldn't have minded if it had been slammed. Amie gave me the best "wash before cut"! TBH can relax myself just thinking about the head massage. All of the hair products used on me were up to standards. The hair cut itself gets a 10/10...just the right length and amount of layers. Alex was amazing! I have had some really bad experiences in the past. Such as last year I was trying to be a redhead and they lady made it a cool ash blonde with a purple undertone? I had a consultation with Alex, mentioned my concerns, had pictures and the formula my previous hairstylist had. (I moved so I needed a new place for color and cut). Obviously every salon is different and so are their color products so there is still a gamble that it could go wrong. Alex really knows color, she brought out a swatch book and copied down the formula. The red came out exactly how I wanted it. My experience at Lava was horrible. My hair is damaged beyond repair. The photo where my hair is blonde is to show the difference in damage and thickness. The blonde was also done at lava and I was happy with that, but my experience went down hill from there. My next two appointments, the color wasn't what I asked for. There was never any acknowledgement by the stylist of the damage to my hair (or shirt). I didn't want to leave a bad review because they did try to color correct my hair to what I asked for (free of charge) at the other location, but they can't put the hair back that's missing from a third of my head... I did reach out to the owner via email a week ago to share my experience, but I still haven't received a response. By posting this review, i just hope to save others from having the same horrendous outcome. read more

I was visiting from out of town and made sure I stopped by to my have friend from college Amie cut, color and style my hair! Amie did an amazing job mixing a custom color for my hair and getting my cut just right! I am so happy to have experienced the fun atmosphere that Lava Salon has! The staff all had a smile on their faces! They have cool tools that set them on the cutting edge of hair salons! I'm new to the area so this was my first time at a new salon in over a decade! I went by online reviews and proximity to my home when making this decision--and I am sure glad that I did! Casey cut my hair and she knocked it out of the ball park! Her friendly and funny demeanor made her a pleasure to be around (ask her how she got her boyfriend to put the toilet seat down lol), and she gave me exactly what I showed her in pictures! I did have to wear a mask (sadly I'm one of those people with a history of severe vaccine reactions so my physician has me waiting), but that was not a hinderance. I have super long, black, virgin, asian hair and I am very picky about who cuts it. Moving here and having to find another hair stylist was stressful! Luckily I trusted my gut and other reviews and booked a cut with Casey here at Lava Salon. Not only is Casey super sweet, engaging, and straightforward, she made me feel very comfortable and didn't cut off more than I wanted. I did get a good bit off but it was very much needed. Adorable salon, vintage trendy atmosphere. Staff is welcoming as well as the salon puppy who is super sweet. They have gone all out with decor, when getting washed you can watch a ceiling mounted tv with a slide show of the staff. Looks like they have great parties and enjoy eachother as a team. I love this salon so much. The atmosphere is fun, the products they sell are great, and Alex Tamburro is AMAZING. Not only do I love talking to her, she has literally given me my two favorite haircuts of my entire life- and she has only cut my hair twice. One was based on Winona Ryder's hair in Reality Bites and she nailed it, and then for the next cut I did a boyish grown out pixie for the first time ever, and I cried. No hair touching my neck felt so freeing and I now understand what gender euphoria from a hair cut feels like. Never have I cried after getting a haircut (except once when I was 12 and my mom took me to great clips- that was not a happy cry though). It was everything I wanted but had been too scared to try for years. She knows how to work with your specific hair texture/type, bone structure, and style. Geoff made me feel welcome and immediately comfortable as we chatted about my style, my Pet Care business, and the best color options for my skin tone. I had a great hair cut from Spencer. She was nice and artistic person. She made sure we were on the same page and guided me through the process. She gave me tips on how to style it and selected products for me from the product line they sell/advocate. It's supposed to be good for you, good for earth kinda stuff, but I haven't tried or read about it yet. The place is cool and hip. Someone put lots of creativity into designing it. Atmosphere is laid back. Good fit to Avondale :) I cut my long hair short (incl. shampoo and styling) and paid $50+tax&tip + hair products that were recommended to me. I don't know if it's the salon's deal, but Spencer told me if I referred three friends to her, my haircut would be free. I walked in for a consultation expecting to come back for an appointment. They told me to wait a second and a stylist met me at the front desk. I have grown out a lot of gray and wanted to know her opinion on Bleaching versus highlights etc. And what would go with my skin tone I was also expecting this to be expensive because I knew this would be a color correction if we decided to bleach. She quoted me $110 per hour and said to plan on five hours and that was just for a bleach bath. I still wasn't opposed To the price but I did ask her her thoughts on what color would complement my skin tone cover the gray and if my highlighted color around my face would look good because I've gotten compliments that it matches my eyes. She proceeded to tell me in front of everyone that checked out at the register that the highlights that I had framing my face for the color that nobody ever wanted. Those were her exact words " nobody wants that color". I have to say not only did I think it was a poor choice of words but also embarrassing that we were still at the front desk while she was giving me a consultation and said those things in front of other clients leaving. I feel like I want to say her name was Amy but not 100% sure. I had no intention of booking the appointment I just politely said I would call back and the receptionist followed me out the front door. She was very nice a young pretty blonde girl and she asked about just scheduling a haircut. However they do you require that you pay the full amount of the haircut upfront and you also do not have an option of not getting a treatment. When I asked what the treatment was they could not tell me she said it would be whatever the stylist recommended. So I'm guessing if my hair was dry it would be something for moisture etc. I also am not opposed to paying half upfront so that a stylist is not sitting there when people don't show up. I did not expect to pay the full price upfront especially when I really could not get an appointment date that was anywhere in the near future. I will say that the receptionist was extremely friendly very nice and her hair looked great. She may have been a stylist I'm not sure. The stylist that gave me the consult had brown wavy hair. Unfortunately because of the rudeness of the stylist and poor choice of words and embarrassment I will not be going back ever. This is extremely sad due to the fact that I thought the prices were a bit high and I was willing to pay that but I'm not going to pay that kind of price to get insulted. I have attached a picture of the color of my hair with the money piece highlight. I have been a loyal client of this shop since the beginning of 2019. I have seen Grace, who came highly recommended, each time. My experiences at this shop over the year were hit or miss. Grace would do a good job one visit, then not so great on a subsequent trip. I saw her five times. Everytime I saw her, she couldn't even remember if she used clippers or scissors. Every visit was like my first visit and I had to explain how I liked my hair cut every time. On my last visit, I became somewhat irritated that Grace still didn't seem to know the basics about my hair. She then proceeded to give me the worst haircut I believe I've ever gotten. For a straightforward haircut, it's hard to believe how bad it looks right now. After finishing I was told at the front that Grace got some sort of promotion and now my haircut, which didn't change in any way from precious visits, was 20% more now. Because she's a level 2 stylist now. The work, however, remained the same. I made a payment to this shop and left. The shop called me later telling me my card was invalid. I had used my card several times since my visit. The shop attendant asked if I wanted to speak to the owner. I said I really didn't care. She then told me she would get the owner. 2 hours later, nobody reached out. I once again called the shop to clear up the payment after calling my bank. After making the payment a second time, I was told to provide my email and a receipt would be sent. None was. For the third time over two days, I had to track down the shop to give me my receipt. I responded indicating I was extremely disappointed with the service and was considering writing a bad review. That's when things got interesting. An hour later, the owner of the shop called me. At first he seemed to want to apologize. I tried to explain the various ways the shop lost my business and the owner, irritated that the apology wasn't going to win me back, then proceeded to issue threats directly at me if I went through writing a bad review! He accused me of trying to sell drugs in his shop! Unbelievable! I don't like being threatened by pushy owners and I am a man of my word. The owner of this shop is very rude and petty and wanted to continue to call me long after I told the shop I was done with them, in an effort only to harass me. He couldn't just apologize and let it be. If that had happened, I probably wouldn't be writing this review. I literally signed in to Yelp for the first time ever just to share my experience with Lava. For any men looking to get your haircut at Lava, here are some other points to consider. 1. There is a value assigned to work. This shop does a lot of fancy dying and cutting procedures and your basic men's haircut is going to be more expensive for no real reason. Also be prepared to have your haircut price get raised intermittently. 2. The parking at Avendale is a disaster. You can park right next to Hwy 17 and try to get out if your car or take your chances in the tiny gravel alley behind the shopping plaza. The shop will cancel your appointment on you at the 5 minute past mark even if you can't find parking. 3. On a completely separate occasion, I was heading into this shop for an appointment and they called me en route to tell me my appointment needed to be pushed back an entire hour because they mismanaged their appointment times. I had to go back home, then return. When I arrived, I had to wait an additional 20 minutes beyond the original hour delay. This shop wants to get by because of its decor and it feels very trendy. But ask yourself if the haircut is worth the price because the art inside is nice. The owner is also petty. Don't do business with petty people. read more

Went to see Ryan for the first time. I have curly/wavy hair and the one stylist who could cut it moved away. She gave me one of the best cuts I've ever had! She spent a long time with me reviewing the cut and teaching me how to use various products to get the look I wanted. She is truly an artist. The price was a little more than I expected but still in a very reasonable range given her talent and the amount of time she spent with me. I moved back to Charleston early last year and fully expected to be as frustrated by my search for a stylist as I had been years ago. Not so this time. I was a little wary of going to Lava because other similar salons in Charleston have always struck me as overpriced and snooty. I went here to get a haircut and showed the lady cutting my hair a picture of what I wanted my hair to look like and a picture of what it used to look like and she then cuts it 2 inches to short and does not even thin out one side of my head to where I had to have it thinned out the next day. She also had both sides uneven and I had to get that fixed too. The woman cutting it had us come in early too because she had to leave early and it was vey obvious she rushed it. Just moved (back) to Charleston and was looking forward to checking this place out. The haircut was OK. I have a crew cut: clippers on the sides and trim on the top which took 30 minutes max. I knew there was a chance that just because I'm female I would be paying a higher priced cut based on this, but I thought maybe they would see the silliness in this since my haircut is for all intents and purposes masculine. They charged me $55 and I asked them "even though I have a crew cut, you're going to charge me a ladies haircut?" they said yes. I didn't argue. Which brings me to my suggestion to Lava Salon: Change the way you charge for haircuts. In my opinion, charging people a different price based on their gender is a trip back in time. I'm queer and I don't particularly identify myself as a "lady." If you charge a standard price on the type of haircut it will be more inclusive. I do hope you'll consider what I've said. I gave this salon and one particular stylist 3 visits to match the target color and cut I showed without success. I have a "3 shots, you're out" policy with stylists, which I'm rethinking since this experience, btw. The last visit was the worst, unfortunately, and I had to go to another salon and stylist to fix both. My hair looked terrible after my last visit to Lava and I will not return. $300+ later, mind you. This salon was the most expensive I've ever been to. Also, I'm not sure what the purpose of requiring a new client consultation is if the stylist isn't going to give you what you ask for - or even come close - after 3 visits? Not only is the atmosphere fun, quirky, and interesting, the stylists clearly know their stuff. Usually when I go in for a hair cut, anywhere, the experience is nothing to write home about. But at Lava, the decor alone is something that makes the experience fun. More importantly, my stylist talked me through exactly what she was doing and the products she was using. As someone with extremely curly hair, having a stylist who knows their stuff is CRUCIAL. And I can safely say Spencer understood how to cut my curls to avoid what all curly haired girls fear: triangle syndrome. Furthermore, she did a color to offset some two-tone issues I had from some some underlying dye from a long time ago. Again, she knew how to ensure my hair would safely come out even and one color. Plus, due to her knowledge of appropriate product, my curls stayed non-frizzy and in perfect shape while still feeling soft and silky- even through a nap! No small feat. I felt safe in her hands, and enjoyed the many screens, wall art and quirky decorations at Lava. It was an all around great experience and I left with better hair. I think anyone would walk out of Lava not only satisfied with the hair styling, but glad they chose such a fun, unique salon.
