Worst service I've ever received and a complete and utter lack of professionalism here. Tried to give this salon a second chance after they cancelled my appt day of for a previous visit. And, I kid you not, they texted me the morning of my appt, again, to tell me they needed to reschedule my appt. After alerting them that this was the second time in a row this had happened, they gave me a cancellation slot for 4pm, which I accepted. At 3:45pm, I get a text that they need to move my appt to 4:30 because they are running behind. I accept. When I'm finally seen at 5pm, Chris is cranky that he's covering someone else's appt and it's clear he wants to go home. When he realizes that I need a color correction, I believe he almost had a tantrum, knowing it was going to be a process. I was prepared for the correction to take more than one visit and asked him to do what he could. He eventually even refuses to do a test strip on my hair to make sure I can move forward with another stylist the following day. Washes my hair and flat out refuses to do anything. And ensures me that someone will be able to do my hair the following day. The scheduler says they are completely booked for the foreseeable future so I just leave. With wet hair, and zero words to describe this experience other than inexcusable. To be fair, the manager did call me the next day to try to clear up the situation by asking for my side of events. But they'd already lost me as a customer at that point. She told me it would take multiple appointments to get my hair where I wanted. I ended up making an appt at Lava Salon with Emma instead who got me EXACTLY where I wanted to be in one appointment lasting 3 hours. I would not recommend Urban Nirvana for anything other than a trim and if you are ok with being treated poorly. read more

I had a haircut and root touch-up by one stylist. Somehow, instead of depositing root color to cover grays, her color actually lightened a full 1" strip of hair from dark brown to auburn and did not cover any grays. Horrible!! I came back to have a senior stylist correct the color. It worked, but I ended up having these mismatched strips of base color. I'll give them one more shot. read more

Ruined my beautiful blonde hair that i was so proud of. Well. I was super excited to make an appointment at such a high end hair salon. I got to my appointment 15 minutes early at 8:45 am. All I asked for was to keep my natural roots light brown as they were. And to maybe do some highlights like in the photo. The hair stylist agreed and then began to put things in my hair which quickly became DARK BROWN and the ends of my hair became grey I was so shocked. I have spent so long getting my hair to the very light blonde it is and now it's ruined. I was in the salon from 9-5 it was horrible. My hair is so embarrassing and I'll have to wear hats til I see another stylist. I wish I never went. When I booked I just selected "any stylist" thinking they would all know how to do their job equally, but I got a level 1 stylist (the lowest) they tried removing the dye but it came out horrible. Please save your time, hair health and money and don't go here. UPDATE: 1 month after, my hair is still destroyed, multiple hair salons have said they can't help me and my hair has since turned bright orange. Because of this hair stylist it has severely impacted me even wearing my hair down, and I have been talked to about my hair by my work. Please reconsider coming here read more

I can honestly say I have never written a review for Yelp, but felt compelled to after my experience at Urban Nirvana Hair in West Ashley this past weekend. I've lived in Charleston for about 10 years now and I can't tell you how many hair salons I've been too, how many different prices I paid, and how many times I left the salon feeling a little disappointed. I am so glad that I took "one more chance" trying somewhere new because I could not be more happy with my experience! The salon itself is very clean, with their products displayed neatly throughout. Despite how small it may look on the outside, it's actually quite spacious inside. My appointment was with Shea on Saturday morning for, what I had thought was, a haircut and blowout. After shampooing however, I had realized that she was setting up for a blowout only. When I asked if she was doing a haircut as well, she immediately checked the scheduling book to see what the mix-up was. It turns out, this was 100% my fault because I had only scheduled the shampoo and blowout -_- I could not have been more embarrassed! Shea, without missing a beat, said that fitting in a hair cut would not be a problem at all and to not even worry about it. I was so grateful for her understanding and truly appreciated her being able to fit a haircut in for me. Now to the haircut itself - I am really picky about my hair, and I really feel bad for anyone cutting it, but Shea was so sweet and patient. She was able to convey exactly what I had described to her. For whatever reason, I feel like this is so hard to find in a hair dresser in Charleston! Our conversation was pleasant, but not overbearing, and she had suggested some products only after I had further asked about them. She did a wonderful job and checked in with the cut every once in awhile to make sure she was doing everything I was looking for. Overall, I could not recommend this salon anymore if I wanted to. Not only were they able to get me a same day appointment, but they hooked me up with a great stylist! Harlie was amazing and super helpful, I trusted her completely. I hadn't cut my hair in 2.5 years (I know) and finally decided to cut a big chunk off to donate. In the past when I've made a big cut stylists were often wary to go too short, afraid that I wouldn't like it, but Harlie was so confident in how a short cut would look and her ability to pull it off that she just went for it! In the end I got about 12" taken off all around and then she styled it for me; my hair went from waist length to shoulder length and I love it! I couldn't be happier and highly recommend seeing Harlie if you need anything in the future. Their prices were reasonable as well. For now Harlie is considered a base level stylist so it cost me $39, which is a great price for the time she put in. read more

In fact go look (drool) at her Instagram ModernhairbyShea she is hands down the BEST ever. Not only is she on another level with color, she can do fantastic things with a pair of scissors. I have never sat in a chair and said "Just do you, I trust you fully" until I had her hands on my hair. You can tell she loves what she does by how intense her face gets when she is doing your hair!!! Decided to make the leap to a "lob" after 16 years of really long hair and couldn't be happier to be in Liza's talented hands. Liza was engaged and effervescent, even at this last appointment of the day. She definitely made a great first impression on me. The cut is beautiful and bouncy. Went in to go from warm blonde to brown. I did not want to bleach my hair again to preserve health. After going in I sat waiting for 1 hour. Finally when in the chair and showing pictures she insisted we bleach again..... I was trying to go BROWN. She did a shadow root in brown that is barely visible and then toner to make my hair GRAY! Looks awful. Cried the whole was home. Called to try to find some resolution before closing time and they did not answer. Washed hair at home to try to get gray toner out and it felt like straw. Do not go here for color. You do not get what you want and pay way to much for terrible service. Went back for correction and Ryan was sweet and tried to help. This is only my second yelp review - but after incredibly disappointing results and spending over ten hours here; I felt in necessary to save others their time and money. I came to get my hair cut and colored here. The cut was great; however, the color was so off that it overshadowed all benefits of the cut. I paid for the baliage treatment and full dye -- and went home after 3.5 hours to hair much much darker than proposed. I went in two days later for a treatment to lighten the color which the stylist and manager agreed was much darker than intended. The treatment to lighten changed the undertone to red brassy color. Despite hoping for a week that the color would go away; the red persisted and grew more noticeable at the temples. Thus, I returned for a third time. The stylist put in regular highlights that as you can see were so quickly done one could not believe they were done in a studio. So despite paying for the baliage highlights in the hopes of the Palermo hair color; I left with hastily done highlights done with foil at the hands of a stylist who initially mixed a dye too dark and caused this to spiral from here. Upon sending the final picture of the the proposed "fixed" highlights to the manager, I have not heard back. read more

I've been getting my hair cut by Chandler since April. It's safe to say the only thing stopping me from coming back weekly would be the fact that I'd run out of hair to cut!! Such a nice man who knows what he's doing and consciously takes his time to make every detail count. I don't wear makeup for my appointments, and I feel BETTER than a million bucks when I walk out the salon! Chandler makes you feel like a friend he's just catching up with. I have had my hair done by the same stylist downtown for the 20 years I've lived in Charleston but last year she passed away suddenly, so I thought I'd try somewhere new and Urban Nirvana is right by where I regularly have a tedious wait to pick up my daughter from school. On a random walk-in last year I got a cut by Liza that got noticed by my (now-ex) wife, and believe me that was something. The salon is comfortable, and Liza spends just the right amount of time getting my cut right but getting me out of the chair in a short amount of time. These days, I have a new girlfriend and I see Liza every other week to keep my cut fresh, always on a weekday before I get in that horrific school traffic line. read more

Called 3 times over the span of 2 months and left messages for the manager to call me back...nothing. Well, here is my 2 cents via Yelp. I had an appointment and was running late. I called. me-"I am so sorry, I live an hour and a half away, and I am running behind. Can I still come or possibly come to a later appointment?" the receptionist, Ashley," No, we don't have anything." me-"I am only 10 minutes away and already drove an hour and 20 minutes." To say Ashley was rude is an understatement. I showed up 10 minutes later to return this awful product they convinced me I had to have. When I walked in the ENTIRE staff glared at me as if interrupted their favorite episode of Gossip Girl. I lived in L.A. for 6 years, and never felt this amount of unfounded pretentious nonsense. The receptionist was the worst part. She was unbelievably nasty. From one business owner to another...you should coach this employee about the importance of repeat business. I hate to write bad reviews and I was really excited to try out a new salon to get my hair cut/ styled. I have really curly hair and only want people experienced with curly hair to touch it. When I called to schedule an appointment I asked if they had anyone that was really good at curly hair and they scheduled me with one of their stylists. She was very polite but had absolutely no idea what to do with my hair! She spent all of a couple minutes looking at it before just cutting it all to one length and sending me out the door with wet hair treated with a deep conditioner. She seemed rushed to get back to her other client who was having her hair colored and suggested that 'because I'm not doing anything tonight' I should just leave a conditioner on my hair overnight rather than her spending the time to blow it out and style it nicely. I guess going home to my husband and child isn't reason enough to have nice looking hair for a few days :( I left feeling like I was rushed out the door and feeling really bummed about not even getting to see my hair styled after a really expensive hair cut ($65!!) I will not be visiting this salon ever again and don't suggest it to anyone with curly hair! read more

So it started with an emergency hair intervention phone call for an appointment. The salon was able to set an appointment for me that day with a junior stylist by the name of Lauris. I have a regular stylist there that is wonderful by the name of Amanda but she was booked. And it was an EMERGENCY. Let me just say that Lauris was amazing!
