    Voodoo Chicken
    Ashley F.

This was difficult to review because I appreciate quality but also like value. The food and coffee was great; however when you pay $50 for brunch for 2 people you want to leave satisfied. I'm not a big guy and I thought the portions were a bit small. I ordered the voodoo chicken and my partner had the French toast. The chicken was nice and spicy and well balanced. The French toast was very Yum and not too sweet; however... It was French toast and $16 is a lot for egg and bread. The coffee was great. The decor was nice and quaint, but some seats were in the sun. The service was very good. I would come back again, but unfortunately it won't be a regular occurrence.

CW from top left: In a Shoal sardines, Sylvester pork belly, Old Boy sausages, and Belgian waffles

Bonus points for the fun relaxed setting, attentive service, and creative menu! Still only 3/5 stars from me. We all ordered nice and tasty looking things from the Brunch menu, yet only 1 our of 4 in our group was happy with the meal... Old Boy (Lamb and rosemary sausages, soft creamy polenta, poached egg and gravy). Sausages were ok, but not lick-your-lips great. Polenta was a tiny bit creamy but really quite regular. Verdict: Not as exciting as the menu suggested. Sylvester (Braised pork belly, fennel succotash, salted pear and a fried egg). Pork belly was soft, but not juicy from the fat in the meat. Verdict: A bit disappointing The Liege (Belgian waffles with ricotta, passionfruit and honey). Passionfruit ricotta was very creative and tasted nice, but the waffles were quite dry. Small serving too. Verdict: Disappointing. In a Shoal (Pan fried sardines, herb Napoli sauce, potato rosti, poached eggs). The consumer of this meal kept munching away quietly and was happy. Verdict: Good. Overall opinion: Nice place, but the food was a bit of a disappointment after reading a lot of great reviews.

Suffice to say, if you've not yet ventured to this cafe on Arthur Street, I'd do so pronto. King Arthur is the new family member from the same folks that brought us Merriweather Cafe. Their ethos and value around high quality seasonal food remains and so do the friendly faces behind the counter. Similarly, just as the creation of the menu might has been considered and carefully constructed, the way in which the meals are crafted from the kitchen are given equal care and attention. I've been both for lunch and breakfast now and each time it has been a calming escape with a side of soul food. The gnocchi with lemon and tarragon in their opening days was, in true Goldilocks style, just enough. The serving size that good amount with gnocchi to savor but not be in a land of regret about the quantity you've devoured. And if you're so inclined, treat yourself to a post-lunch treat from their range of baked goods. I'd recommend the raspberry frangipane tart if it's available. Breakfast of lamb ragu on sourdough was hearty and a great winter alternative to porridge or eggs and bacon. Pro Tip: This isn't a large cafe so there may be a little wait during peak times.

From others' photos, the food looked decent, so I chose this one place. I had high hopes, after seeing their breakfast options and fairy floss dessert, but alas, I was underwhelmed. The location and place itself is decently decorated and in the middle of Spring Hill, but it wasn't particularly eye-opening. The girls there were friendly, but a bit disorganized service-wise (throughout my entire meal). I ordered a coffee to start, and as expected, was just alright. For sustenance, I had the corn fritters with smoked salmon on the side, but I almost didn't finish the corn fritters! They were lukewarm, chewy, and tiny! There were two - and smaller than the size of my palm, with a bit of smoked salmon, a poached egg, and rocket with tomato relish (that just tasted like tomato sauce). The presentation and the service were alright, and their lunch options looked good by the way other customers were chowing down... but they really need to work on their breakfast if they're going to keep serving it all day!
