In the meantime, our family of three (two working parents and a toddler) has now been without a working washer for three weeks and has spent approximately $500 sending out laundry just to manage basic household needs. Neither Lowe's nor Maytag has offered reimbursement, a temporary solution, or meaningful customer care. Stopped by while I was on my way to Hartshorne, and the guy helped me find exactly what I needed immediately. Even though there were some other customers in there bustling around, he was helping us all really efficiently. When it came time to pay, my single hex wrench didn't meet the minimum to pay with card, and I didn't have any cash on me. Before I could even say anything, the guy told me to just take it and get them back later. This wa shocking to me as this was the first time I'd ever been there and didn't even know the guy. It's not like we became best friends in the 2 mins I was there either; I was just some random guy. This is super cheesy, but I always think of that interaction as the epitome of small town hospitality. Also, they have a lot of single tools and stuff that places like Home Depot only sell in sets, so it's usually better to check here first.

Since most mom and pop stores have disappeared, that's true, to a point. But sometimes you need specialized attention that you can't get at the big boxes. My first house was built around 1915. Some of the trim had been damaged at some point and I ready wanted to replace it with original wood. Of course no one carries such old pieces. On a whim I stopped in here and after some searching way in the back, they actually had it, or something reasonably close to it. Impressive. Unfortunately the store itself was a dump. No merchandise, poorly organized, overpriced. So I rarely went here. Recently I wanted to fertilize my lawn. I researched the big box fert programs and they were quite expensive. I found a program ACE uses which is identical to the big box program but considerably less expensive. Walking in I immediately found a well lit, fully revamped store. The shelves were well stocked and their prices weren't bad. Not great. But they had the fert in stock. I even had a great conversation with the cashier. I love that kind of personalized approach. Yeah, it's out of the way. Yeah, they may not have what you are looking for. But this place is a jewel. And with the revamped, refreshed store, you may be surprised to find a new place to shop. Oddball material, competitive pricing, and old school customer service. It's certainly worth the trip.
