Since most mom and pop stores have disappeared, that's true, to a point. But sometimes you need specialized attention that you can't get at the big boxes. My first house was built around 1915. Some of the trim had been damaged at some point and I ready wanted to replace it with original wood. Of course no one carries such old pieces. On a whim I stopped in here and after some searching way in the back, they actually had it, or something reasonably close to it. Impressive. Unfortunately the store itself was a dump. No merchandise, poorly organized, overpriced. So I rarely went here. Recently I wanted to fertilize my lawn. I researched the big box fert programs and they were quite expensive. I found a program ACE uses which is identical to the big box program but considerably less expensive. Walking in I immediately found a well lit, fully revamped store. The shelves were well stocked and their prices weren't bad. Not great. But they had the fert in stock. I even had a great conversation with the cashier. I love that kind of personalized approach. Yeah, it's out of the way. Yeah, they may not have what you are looking for. But this place is a jewel. And with the revamped, refreshed store, you may be surprised to find a new place to shop. Oddball material, competitive pricing, and old school customer service. It's certainly worth the trip.

However, due to some work in living room I needed different paint. I took a chip and went to Hone Depot to match. Came back and touched up and it wasn't close. I looked at the kitchen paint and saw the sticker from Painters Express. So I tried there. Although it was a small chip, the gentleman worked with me for several minutes to try and find a match. We found one that appeared close. I went home and used it and it was an exact match. If you look hard enough, you can see a slight difference but that's expected with new batches of paint and one on a wall from a few years. Fast forward to this Sunday. I needed to do some touchup upstairs. I thought it was the same brown as kitchen so I used that extra paint. It wasn't. It was so noticeable and looked horrible. I went to Painter's Express with a bigger chip (cut a piece from laundry room behind the washer). The kid used it to come up with a few possibilities. He got all 5-6 swatches and compared. We found 1 that looked really close. He mixed it. Then he painted a little on the swatch and tried with a hair dryer. It was exact.
