I brush my teeth. I floss my teeth. Regularly. Avidly. Vigorously. But I also have these genes, see, and genes have a way of foiling even the most diligent of tooth regimens. Thus, I found myself at Dr. Heggen's office at the recommendation of my regular dentist, needing a root canal. Root canals are broken into two separate appointments, for some reason. I have no idea why they do this - I would be ALL for only having half my mouth and tongue feeling like a giant pincushion just once, thank you. But since Dr. Heggen knows a whole lot more about root canals than I do, I agreed to the two-appointment plan. Anyway, if both of my appointments had gone as smoothly as the second one did, this would probably be a three or four star review. Throughout the procedure, Dr. Heggen was very nice and kept checking on me to make sure I was doing OK. Things seemed to go smoothly enough, and I didn't experience any major pain or anything (although I did get surprised by a lovely bill for $100, after I had already paid around $350 at my first visit and been specifically assured when I asked whether I would owe any more that my insurance would cover the rest). Also, when I accidentally left my prescription for antibiotics on the counter at the office, Dr. Heggen called it in to my pharmacy for me after hours. But the first visit...oh. my. god. Because of my long and illustrious dental history, I'm generally pretty kopacetic about dental work. I actually *like* getting my teeth cleaned. And my first visit with Dr. Heggen was the first time a dentist had ever made me cry. The whole process was totally jarring, extremely scary, somewhat painful, and I was basically shaking the entire time from the moment he started in on my teeth. Just not a good experience. At all. I recently underwent five hours of dental work in one day to treat a failed root canal. I was moved to find my experience with Dr. Heggen and his assistant to go beyond my wildest dreams. I found them to be extremely demonstrative in their concern and caring for my well being. When I arrived from another office where my procedures had been initiated my blood pressure was too high from the rush across town eating my lunch in the car! They waited until I had relaxed and showed extra concern until all was well. As someone with an ultra sensitive central nervous system, I really appreciated that they made sure going in that I was comfortable and armed with a safety hand motion if I needed a break or something hurt. A hand on my shoulder and regular checks on my comfort level made the grueling day more bearable. I highly recommend them to anyone, especially all of my fellow sensitive souls! read more

Dr. Heggen and his staff are the BEST - very compassionate and caring bunch! I had root canal 10 years ago and Dr. Heggen made me feel at ease and it wasn't painful as I imagined. I went back 10 years later because of a horrible tooth ache and Dr. Geggen suspected that the root might be cracked. I was horrified at the notion of tooth extraction. Dr. Heggen assured me that it was his job to save every tooth that is possible and then explained patiently the scenario that I would need tooth extraction and subsequent procedure and caring that goes with it. I was very well informed and felt ready for whatever the outcome was. Dr. Heggen put me on antibiotics to help with the swelling and examined me four times in two weeks to confirm and reconfirm his diagnosis that it was indeed a cracked root. That wasn't good enough for me and I begged his office to schedule a fifth appointment just to be absolutely sure. Donna and Terri were incredible. They squeezed me in every one of those five appointments without more than 5 mins of wait each time. His staff was wonderfully friendly and assured me every time that everything was going to be ok. And Dr. Heggen was a saint to put up with my rambling every time! Everything did turn out just fine. Donna and Terri set up the referral for me to get my tooth extracted and now I am pain free. After a referral from Dr Ragsdale, I've been left with an unchecked and untreated abscess. Now I have to pay for a retreatment that I can't afford. I've been under his care and in pain for a long time. I just don't how it was missed. If you do decide to see him, I hope your results are better than mine. I must say his staff is very caring and always go the extra mile for patients. I would give them five stars if I could. They are amazing. read more

Over a year ago I was sent to Dr. Heggen by the dentist I was going to (Dr. Ragsdale) because I was experiencing pain in my mouth. For some reason, Dr. Ragsdale wouldn't check to see if I actually had a problem going on with a tooth, and said to go see Dr. Heggen. So I did. What an experience, I spent three hours in one of his chairs either waiting, or having x-rays done and other things done to determine if I had a tooth that was in need of a root canal. Well, after my teeth tested fine, he said,"I think the tooth that is causing you pain is the one with a crown. Ready to get started?". Uh. No. I was not ready to get started. Why get started if the tooth tested "okay"??? Then he said, "If it's not that one, then it's the one next to it and we will do that one next time." uh. What?? No thank you. I'm not interested in having one root canal that I don't need, let alone two. I sat there completely perplexed as what to do. I decided it was best to say, "I am not prepared to have a root canal at this time, let's make an appointment.". So, I paid him and left. Later, I called Dr. Ragsdale's office and asked for a referral to another Endodontist, whom later determined that I did not need a root canal in either tooth and that My pain was due to TMJD. !!! read more

I've had a few root canals. The most recent of which was by Dr. Heggen, which went way better than the others. Pros: super nice office staff; the doc and his assistants are friendly and explain things thoroughly; he makes sure you're completely numb before the procedure; the dental dam and sunglasses keep tooth dust out of your eyes and airway. A bunch of other comfort measures are taken. The doc is efficient yet precise. He's knowledgeable and experienced. Cons: it's a root canal. it's gonna suck no matter what. But it sucks a lot less here than the other places. I fully recommend this place for all your endodontic needs. to the staff: keep up the great work and take care. read more

The entire staff from front office to back office is an absolute ideal model of genuine patient care & service. I have never had a better experience. The other reviews where people have posted their discontent of paying for re-treatment are not seeing the value of being able to restore & save your natural tooth by an expert (Dr. Hagen & his assistant Kathy) that others in the same profession would not be capable of or automatically deem an extraction which would, in the long run, create more expense by orthodontic work or Veneer after the extraction. I too have major dental issues and came across this site while searching for Dr. Heggen's number for my third root canal with him. I cry on a regular basis at the Dentist. But I really like Dr. Heggen a lot and have never cried with him. He does come out with guns ablaze but it's done with a good bedside manor. His nurse pats you while he does the shots which totally takes you mind off the shot. Then he really numbs you up, no chance of a jarring jolt while drilling (which I experience often). Then he gets you all prepped with vaseline on your lips, a dental dam, and the block and goes to town. Quick and crazy, you don't know what hit you, I wouldn't say gentle but he's caring if that makes sense. The fees seem a little crazy high is the only reason I'm not giving five stars. read more

Beware of this office. Heggen may be a great dentist, but the office is in sad, bad shape. The two ladies at the front have been there forever and gloss over questions with a singular 'yes' to everything. Just now again I asked if they take MetLife and she said yes, and then on further queries she said 'we take Delta, they are like MetLife'. By this time I know they didn't because I contacted Met. Had I known I had no coverage I would have gone to another office. I ended up paying retail for services. Granted caveat emptor, but I was trusting in the begining that first day scheduling my appointment. Scheduling was a mess with wait times on both vists around 3 + hours. I think the second visit, which front desk called to reschedule to earlier in the day, wasn't written down. I waited for 90 minutes then went in to see the Dr at the orginal scheduled time. They were about to work on me when it was discovered, by asking me my name, 'how's it going' that they had the wrong paper work/xrays for me and the Dr. Close call ! The operating area is noisy and busy with people rushing around, joking, droping things. It didn't reflect calm and thoughtful, focused work. Not saying he can't work in that environment, just that was my impression. Doc and nurse were chatting away above me, too, about 'things'. Oh, and it's a body shop - you sit along with 4 or 5 others waiting for the doc to jump onto you for your 15-20 minutes. In the end, Dr cracked my tooth and I ended up leaving his office for emergency extraction. Maybe my experience was just that of bad luck. I would think twice about this place and I dont' recommened it. People at this office, maybe calloused, tired. Take a look around and revitalize btw - I really like my regular dentist. read more

It's never fun to get a root canal but if you must, make your apt with Dr.Heggen. You don't have to worry about pain. If you're in it, he has drugs to make it go away. He will keep you pain free during the whole procedure. His techs even pat you on the shoulder as the big long syringes are filling your dental space with numbing liquid. He's not cheap and he's out of network for several dental insurance companies but his staff will file all the paperwork for you and in this world, you get what you pay for and with Dr. Heggen, it's worth it. read more

If you have been referred to Dr. Heggen you should feel confident that you will be treated well. I just received my first ever root canal from Dr. Heggen. For me it was a two-visit process, and both visits went quite smoothly. My experience with Dr. Heggen turned the dread specter of a root canal into an inconvenient tooth-based speed bump, far from the horrible mouth torture we all learn to fear growing up. He was very considerate, answered all my questions with patience, and took great care to minimize pain. The first visit was entirely painless, the second had only the most mild discomfort. His assistant was wonderful, she contributed a great deal to the friendly, warm atmosphere that helps one relax when they are about to have a mouth full of drills and needles. It's worth noting that my initial visit was taken on very short notice. I was sent to his office after visiting my general dentist and they were able to take care of me the same day. read more

Dr. Heggen and his staff are amazing! I had to have advanced surgery for an infection in the gum/roots of a previously tested root canal tooth (originally done by another doctor...). The process required many steps, appointments, and was scary as heck for me. Every step was done with care, from setting appointments, treatment while in the dental chair, and even dealing with insurance, etc... Dr. Heggen himself actually called me to discuss the procedure further when I started wondering if it was all necessary. I've never had a doctor do that for me before! The surgery went very well (most certainly needed to be done). No complications, healed quickly, and I an 100% again. Dr. Heggen is the only endodontist I would trust to work on my mouth. read more

The only reason he gets a one star is because the office staff is nice and caring. Otherwise do NOT go to be treated by him. He did a root canal on me. I was still experiencing pain. After going back a couple of times, he said Oh the tooth can not be saved. I would have appreciated that info before spending so much money. I did have to have thw tooth pulled. read more
