If you have any level of dental anxiety, please read. I went to Dr. Duggan for a root canal after being referred to his practice. I drove from Fredericksburg--a four-hour round trip--leaving my 7-month-old and taking an entire day off. Because he came recommended, I trusted I would be in good hands. I was understandably nervous. I've had root canals before and experienced significant pain afterward, so I communicated that anxiety openly. From the moment Dr. Duggan entered the room, his demeanor was dismissive and arrogant, but I tried to brush it off. As he began administering the numbing injections, my anxiety increased. Before the third injection, I asked to pause for a moment to collect myself. I even tried to lighten the moment by mentioning that I had labored naturally and wasn't sure why I felt so anxious. At that point, he had spent no more than five minutes with me total. His response was shocking. He became visibly frustrated and said, "You're wasting my time. You need to let me do my job or get out of this chair. I know what I'm doing--you don't." I was stunned. No patient--especially one who is anxious and vulnerable--should ever be spoken to this way by a medical professional. I sat up in the chair, in tears. He then made an incredibly condescending and inappropriate comment, saying, "How did you ever labor naturally?" and walked out of the room. I went to the waiting room and broke down. When my husband confronted him, Dr. Duggan denied everything. We left immediately. This was not simply poor bedside manner. It was unprofessional, demeaning, and completely unacceptable--particularly toward a young mother who simply asked for a moment of compassion. For a procedure costing $2,700, I strongly recommend taking your business elsewhere. Choose a provider who respects patients, listens, and treats people with basic human decency. read more

Dr. Duggan is the real deal. I had to get an apicoectomy done after a pretty bad tooth infection decided to make an appearance from a failed root canal. The original endodontist I saw couldn't get me in for surgery for another month, so I went to Dr. Duggan's office on a Thursday and he performed the apico that Monday. He took my concerns seriously and was incredibly professional, all while having a genuine bedside manner. The procedure went smoothly, everything is healing nicely, and I just got back from getting my stitches out. And, yes, it's true. He does give you his cell number just in case you have any questions or concerns before and after the procedure. A true class act and a literal life saver. You can tell he really enjoys what he does. I was nervous as heck for my first root canal. From the moment I called his office to book the appointment, all the way through the entire process, it could not have gone any better. Please just be aware that Dr. Duggan is not in any networks, so if you are lucky enough to have dental insurance, you may want to look further. He is very good at his job, but his office does not make that clear, although he said it was in the multiple documents I signed. It caught me off guard and his response to me was flippant. One of the lingering effects of covid has been big issues with my teeth. I have been going to dr. Duggan for many years now. Previously, dentists have done my root canals and I have had atypical reactions with them. I didn't even know there was a specialist who does root canals. But after several instances getting very sick from root canals performed by dentists, I would never have a dentist do one again. I was referred to Dr Duggan and I'm so glad I was. I've had a few root canals performed by him. He typically does them in one visit while dentists always did them in two. I've sadly had to see Dr. Duggan multiple times throughout the years. I have severe anxiety when it comes to dentists and have cried in his office more than once. There is normally nothing good about having a root canal failure. It's painful, expensive and inconvenient. However, if you must, you should use Dr Duggan. He's very thorough and very upfront and honest about your options. He personally calls after each procedure and I felt completely comfortable with both him and his assistant Dustin. I will add, rather shamefacedly, that he's also incredibly hot. If you have to get tooth work done, why not have a hot man in your mouth? Really, that should be a life slogan. read more

I was referred to Dr. Duggan by my dentist because I required a pretty complicated root canal. I was nervous and arrived at his offices in a lot of pain with an equal amount of anxiety. Getting signed in and the paperwork done was effortless and the staff there was amazing in making sure I was comfortable. Dr. Duggan understood that I have very sensitive teeth (I know everyone says that, but really it is especially true for me.) He took his time and gave me multiple shots of anesthesia to make sure I was completely numb. Throughout the procedure he continued to ask how I was doing and kept me informed throughout the procedure. It truly did not hurt one bit!!! After the procedure he reviewed what he had done, even showed me digital pictures of the procedure to explain in detail what he had to do and then made sure to also explain after procedure care. It was the BEST experience I have ever had with a root canal (I have had a few.) I walked away being VERY impressed with the entire experience. Then a few days later I was even more impressed, as Dr. Duggan called me personally (not one of his staff, but himself) to ask how I was doing and check up on me. This is the kind of care that just is not the norm these days and something I am not used to. Then a few days later he called again! Also, I am not sure what the other reviewer was talking about concerning feeling that they were not informed about the payment and insurance information before the procedure, as it was reviewed with me TWICE before anything was done. The second review was by Dr. Duggan himself, and it was not rushed, he made sure point everything out in detail and explain everything. Dr. Duggan was recommended by my dentist, Dr. Slaughter (who has been recognized as the best dentist in Austin) years ago. I went in to see Dr. Duggan, but didn't need any root canal work at the time. I appreciated Dr. Duggan's conservative style. He was only going to treat me if he was 100 per cent certain I needed the work. After a couple/few years, the same (flagged) area became abscessed. To say the least, I was in excruciating pain. Dr. Slaughter prescribed antibiotics immediately and a pain reducing regimen as well. I was able to get in to see Dr. Duggan a couple of days later. There are many things I appreciated about Dr. Duggan and his long tenured staff. They were friendly, professional, and excellent at what they do. Dr. Duggan was absolutely masterful in his ability to quickly and compassionately move through every aspect of what ended up being a relatively uneventful root canal procedure. I went in completely nervous for 2 root canals today. Dr. Duggan and his team were able to calm me down and talk me through the process. I even had someone with me in the room the whole time which made me more comfortable. My procedure seemed quick, and I believe I was in and out of sleeping. I felt that Dr. Duggan took good care of me through the process by being quick and efficient with his tools. 7 hours later, I'm still numb but I never once felt pain or anything uncomfortable (besides the initial numbing shot - but I've learned that THOSE are your friend!). Do not under any circumstances use Duggan Endontics without first reading the "fine print". He DOES not take anyones dental insurance, nor do they tell you that until AFTER you have the work done. This is deceptive, and ethically wrong. My wife had work done, and upon finding out that they did not take any insurance, we complained that we should have been advised beforehand! A "compromise" was reached and Duggans office agreed to let us pay over time. They then turned us over to a collection agency without notifying us first. I second Tracy's review as the same thing happened to me. This Dr is not a dentist, he's a saleman. If you go in for a root canal, he WILL persuade you one is not enough, it's always better to do 2 or even 3 at the same time. Costs too high? can't afford it? no problem, he will give you a 'easy pay no interest' credit card application to help out. Oh the insurance? sure, he takes everything.. until AFTER you go out. I had to see Dr. Duggan for a consult and was referred by my dentist. The only pain was the entrance/exit of their parking garage. That's nothing to take away from. Dr. Duggan and staff was beyond friendly and helpful. He even gave me his cell number in case of emergencies. It is true that they're not in network with any insurance. Dr. Duggan and his team are truly some of the best in their field and they make getting a root canal as painless and easy as possible. I've had to go to Dr. Duggan for two root canals in the past few years. One after flying home from a work trip in excruciating pain due to an inflamed tooth. I got off the plane, drove straight to my dentist, who then referred me to Dr. Duggan, and they were able to get me in that same day for a consultation. They confirmed the need for a root canal and I was scheduled to come in for the treatment the next day. I have pretty bad dental anxiety so I took their anxiety meds in advance and it worked like a charm. I was in and out in an hour and recovery was easier than most dental work. I had been in so much pain that I was THRILLED to have had the root canal and be back to my normal self. Two years later, I had to return for my second root canal. Thankfully this one was under far less stressful circumstances. I had a tooth that had been bothering me for some time. I went to my normal dentist and had a crown done and a month later I was still feeling some annoying sensitivity. I knew I needed a root canal but was hopeful the pain would go away. When it didn't, I scheduled a consult and they got me in quickly. They placed me at the end of the day so they could squeeze in the treatment on the same day if I needed it. Turns out I did and they were able to get started quickly. Something about my canals not healing well or bleeding too much led them to halt treatment mid-way through and I had to go back a few weeks later to finish. It was fine though and the second appointment was quick. I felt a bit of pain but he gave me a heads up that I might feel something which I appreciated greatly. I was done in an hour and back to work. He even called me after each visit to make sure I was doing OK. Nice touch. Overall, I can't recommend Dr. Duggan and his team enough. I can't say enough how smooth and impressive my experience with Dr. Duggan and his team was. The ease, thoroughness and professionalism truly stood out and his follow up was beyond impressive. The day I got my braces off still ranks as the single best tooth-related experience I have ever had, but today, many many moons later, my experience at the office of Dr. Duggan ranks an enthusiastic second. Dr. Duggan and his assistant Dustin work together like proverbial clockwork. I believe all they do is root canals, and when you do only one thing, and you do it a lot, you tend to get really good at it. Both men, as well as Janetkay the office manager, are warm, patient, professional, welcoming, efficient, and really nice. Before any work is done, they take the time to make sure you understand their payment policy and your financial options. The office itself is very peaceful and calming. It's quiet--there's no icky office Muzak playing in the background--and from the patient's chair, the floor-to-ceiling windows offer a gorgeous view of Shoal Creek and trees trees and more trees. A painless root canal coupled with an aesthetic experience sounds a little weird, but that's what I experienced here. As other reviewers have noted, Dr. Duggan has the perfect bedside manner, confident and caring. I wish he could be my general dentist. My dentist sent me to Dr Duggan for a root canal on a tooth that had been bothering me for several months and then suddenly became more consistently painful. This was not my first root canal, but it was my first visit to an endodontist for one. From the moment I set foot in the office, I was put at ease by Janetkay and then by clinical assistant Dustin, and finally by Dr Duggan himself. My "demon tooth" required a two-visit root canal (totally no fun) but Dr Duggan made sure both times that I had no pain during the procedure(s). Dr. Duggan is wonderful. Having to go to an endodontist is scary, but Dr. Duggan has, hands down, the best bedside manner of any doctor I've ever been to. He has done root canals for both my wife and me and has saved multiple teeth. I trust him completely. Note that he is not a preferred provider for any insurance network, so he isn't cheap, but you are getting what you pay for. To the people posting 1-star reviews, their website clearly states their financial/insurance policy. And if you ask, they can submit pre-treatement estimate to your insurance company so you can understand exactly what will/won't be covered. read more
