Two members of our family were Dr. Nguyen's patients for 2 years and then two were with Dr. Enoch Kim in Laguna Hills for 2 years. Measuring from every aspect, Dr. Kim is a far superior doctor and deserves a 5. In comparison, Dr Nguyen gets at most 2. We wanted to be fair and so we waited 4 years and compared various doctors before writing this review.
Dr. Nguyen is one of the most expensive orthodontists in the area, while the quality is just average. We interviewed 5 orthodontists in the area for my treatment. 4 doctors quoted around mid $3000, and Dr. Nguyen quoted $5000 with the kind of take it or leave it attitude. We went for him hoping that a higher price tag means better service. We couldn't be more wrong.
It turned out that he inflated the treatment time. He said that my treatment would take 2 years, no more no less. Later, I noticed that his internal system set my treatment plan at 18 months. Sure enough in month 18, he stopped treatment. In comparison, other doctors I interviewed all estimated my treatment time to be 18 months. When I brought this to his attention, his staff stated that those doctors were trying to trick me. At the end of 18 months, they would ask me to extend and pay more. Well, now I realize that the other doctors were honest, and he was the one who tricked me.
Dr. Nguyen has too many patients that he can't give each one proper attention. Yet his priority remains at expanding to multiple offices, reaching out to many social groups, and bringing in even more new patients.
Toward the end of my treatment, I began to develop a jaw click. When I asked Dr. Nguyen, he said that I had this problem before my treatment, and it was "my problem". Yes that's the exact word - it was "my problem" not "his problem". I know my jaw. I never had a click problem until the later part of the treatment. After knowing my jaw click, Dr. Nguyen had no intention to correct it, and even asked me what I wanted to do, which I think was quite shameless. He kept dragging the situation, until I gave up. Later, I asked Dr. Kim about my jaw click. Even though I was not his patient, he explained it to me so I was able to understand, and he provided a couple of simple suggestions, which helped. I now am considering to pay Dr. Kim and go through the pain again to correct the jaw click that Dr. Nguyen created.
My son had a bad experience, too. Once he kept complaining about pain in the gum. One night right after an office check up he started to spit blood. It turned out that food was stuck between the gums which caused infection, and Dr. Nguyen had to perform a urgent mini surgery and stop the ortho treatment for a while. When we asked why the obvious infection was not found during the check up, he did not give us a real answer.
Dr. Nguyen has selective memory. In the initial consultation, he said that a complementary tooth whitening and kit would be provided at the end of the treatment. When I asked him and his staff about it at the end of my treatment, they said I was mistaken. They wanted me to read my contract. At that time, I already had my tooth whitening done by my dentist and all I asked for was an extra kit. I remember that Dr. Nguyen made a scene in the office and got emotional. Then he said he would give me the kit if my other child became his patient. At this point, it was clear that Dr. Nguyen's practice was all about money, rather than taking care of patients.
The wait at Dr. Nguyen's office is very long. You spend a lot of time in the receptionist area. After you are called in, you again wait a long time on the dental chair. Then the assistant will come to work on you. Then you wait again for Dr. Nguyen to come take a look. A very simple routine visit can easily take much more than an hour. In comparison, many times there was no wait at all at Dr. Kim's office, who has many patients too but kept the flow going so smoothly. Even if you live in Dana Point and it takes longer to drive to Dr. Kim, your entire office visit trip may not take more time because of the short wait.
Dr. Nguyen is inaccessible. He is always very busy doing something and has no time to talk to you. He and his staff makes you feel that you are not supposed to ask questions, and many times they don't give you straight answers and do it in a way that you won't bother them with more questions. If you are his patient, make sure you remember all your situations and remind him. Never assume he will remember your problems, and what he has said. In contrast, Dr. Kim always takes the initiates to give you updates, often providing answers to your questions before you ask. He welcomes your questions and is always patient with you until you have all the answers.
My sons like Dr. Enoch Kim. They call him the smiley doctor who is always energetic, warm and pleasant. He seems like someone who has a big heart. Dr. Nguyen is the opposite.
