In a way, Wilkinsons is the store that out-Woolies Woolworths (with devastatingly successful results). The goods are definately cheap, the variety is large, and the quality is usually very good indeed. I frequently pop into Wilkinsons when I'm in town for a browse and end up coming away with a bag ful of items that I didn't realise I needed until I went in there!! One item that has served me well for over a year now is the Wilkinson's Eco-bag. It only cost 45p and is a large, strong black re-useable shopping bag (some sort of glazed/strengthened fabric). It folds up neatly with a popper so it doesn't sproing out all over the inside of your handbag. And y'know, I've packed tons of stuff in it and it just keeps going. Unlike the more expensive ones that cost several quid. This one is a bargain! Great shop for stocking up with cheap & cheerful toiletries and body sprays (if you get through a ton of 'em as I do, being addicted to nice smelly stuff) - and kitched ware is a winner too. I bought a load of baking/oven trays six months ago and they still look as if I only took the wrapped off them yesterday (and they get used practically daily). Wilkinsons does everything it says on the tin!

Very good returns policy - no quibble about exchanges or refunds. Trollies and baskets available, alhtough the trollies are set up to stop working if you try to take them very far from the store!

I also thought that the section with linings and furnishing bits (tassles etc) was really good and very good value for money. I loved the blinds section, and am currently measuring up to get the horizontal leather covered blinds in my lounge. I've never seen blinds like these before, and have been assured by the staff that they dont fade in the sun. Looks to be very good quality throughout the store, and the staff i met were very polite and helpful. Looking forward to getting my blinds in now! They will also make curtains to order

There is a custom made curtains and blinds section, and from what i overheard from other people, this service does not cost much more than just buying the fabric and making the curtains yourself, but obviously takes out a lot of the hassle. It is located outside of newcastle town centre, so is most defnitly a 'drive to' experience, but parking is plentiful, and right next to the store.

I needed a drive belt for my lawn mower and after being fobbed off and messed around by many internet companies, a quick chat to Charlies staff and they had the correct belt ordered and delivered to the store within 4 working days - far quicker and massively cheaper than anyone else could do it for. Unfortunately there are not many Charlies stores about (generally located in Mid Wales and the West of the West Midlands). However, do not fear as they now have an excellent web site found at: http://www.charliesdirect.co.uk/ Their garden equipment section is especially well presented with a variety of equipment from cheaper brands (such as Bosch), to more specialised brands (such as Stihl), all at quite reasonable prices. Despite the type of shop things are well laid out, and the shop is kept pretty tidy. A lot of their products are budget brands - so figure that in, and not everything is cheaper than you would find it elsewhere, but its great to kill an hour or two, and you are sure to come away with something you didn't know you needed.

The prices are very reasonable and I have been very impressed with the quality of all the items I have purchased from there. The staff are always very pleasent and helpfull and the store is well laid out. Checkout is always quick and they are quick to open another till if the queues get too long.

On the top floor which is accessable by escalators or by the lift is kidwear, menswear and underwear. They dont have alot to offer in the way f kidwear however and i find this rather disapointing. You will also find a nice small useful cafe which do a nice range of food and drink. On the bottom floor is womens wear, gifts and the food department. Its a nice store for just nipping into but not great for doing a bit shop as they dont have the whole variety available.

Both units have now been merged into the current location which means that everything is now in the same shop which is much better. The range and quality of clothes is very good and they are usually up to date with the latest fashions. The prices are in the mid range - not Primark cheap or designer expensive. The end of season sales at Next (especially the Christmas one) are well worth looking out for as you can get some real bargains with many items half price but be prepared to get up early!
