I really want to love this bar. As an avid supporter of gay women's spaces - and we all know lesbian bars are closing faster than you can say "Ellen DeGeneres" - I want to support this business whole heartedly. I've enjoyed chatting with the owner Shelley the couple times I've had a chance. I've had some fantastic evenings here myself. The remodel they've done recently in the space is fab. But the staff here is sometimes, just... Not what I'd hope for in an LGBT space. The bartender/bouncer with a beard calls people "miss" in a condescending tone (also do you really want to be assuming the gender - much less marital status - of strangers?). They police the bathrooms like nobody's business based on what people look like. And I have gotten the vibe that they're trying to "manage" the population that enters at the door based on appearance. This is supposed to be a welcoming space, and it really feels like it's struggling on that front. I don't think this is just a covid issue because it was like this in the years before as well. I hope the remodel is maybe sign of a forthcoming change: not just to the walls but also to the atmosphere. I support Wildrose, and I want it to become better read more

I came here with a group of girlfriends to dance and have a few drinks without being constantly hit on by creepy dudes. Luckily this was the case until about 1am! Drink prices were reasonable and the music was easy to dance to. I was disappointed in their reactions towards my friend after she lost her wedding ring. She let the bar know and asked if they had found a ring (via Facebook messenger) and they blocked her after being very unhelpful. For that reason, I would not visit this bar again. read more

As a Queer couple from Southern California we were SHOCKED by the lack of inclusivity shown by the staff. The bar staff made snide and offensive comments about my partners hair which is part of their CULTURE. When we asked the security staff for assistance, they refused. It's extremely unfortunate that an establishment founded on inclusion has staff that went out of there way to make patrons feel unwelcome . I hope the management looks into training for the staff. Do better for the community you claim to love and support. read more

Okay men and womyn. My sister and aunt are both lesbians and I am a gay man. We've been coming here for years. So here's how people conduct themselves in a lesbian bar with dos and don'ts: a.) Don't be overly judgmental even if you think you are already open-minded. First of all, people are not perfect, and lesbians are not perfect either, but 98% have been nice here. The bouncers and some of the bartenders can be pretty butch. People who are friends with butches know they can seem gruff and a little too direct to strangers, but they are just being themselves, just not the submissive, cuddly, creatures you think womyn should always be. They are usually nice but won't kiss the asses of people with bad attitudes. If a butch lesbian bouncer was a man, people would just see him as doing his job. b.) Don't think lesbians are manhaters, just don't. (That is a mean stereotype they always hear.) I've come here dozens of times and had only one instance of some butch calling me a "little twerp." She was pretty drunk but not enough to get kicked out. Sometimes people are jerks when they're drunk. If one lesbian is rude to you, then you suddenly think they are all rude because of only ONE person, that would mean you're just being lesbianphobic. c.) Do have patience. There is an Order Here or Service Here sign. Because when men and straights come into the bar, they become sensitive about not being served right away and think they are being discriminated against. So that's why they have a drink line. When I first came here, I mistakingly thought that I was being ignored too, but that was because of my male entitlement. I also needed to learn to read signs. d.) Do realize they have a strict policy about being overly intoxicated. They can lose their license and really, they are strict because they don't want anybody getting hurt on the way home--especially since their main customers are womyn. Me and my sister even got kicked out once because our mom was too drunk. No hard feelings. e.) Do put money into the jukebox. They have a killer jukebox playing The Indigo Girls, Joan Jett, Tracy Chapman, I Kissed A Girl and I liked It etc. f.) Do enjoy a frosty one. They got a great beer selection. They know how to make moderately strong drinks, so don't think they will overpour here because they won't. g.) Do sing. Karaoke night rocks. h.) Do be respectful to the staff. Shelley is a perfect host and has to put up with a lot of drama, things going wrong because it's an old building, and a lot of unnecessary complaints. She is an icon and nobody, and I mean nobody, deserves more respect on the hill than her for keeping the business going FOR DECADES. i.) Do support your sisters. More lesbians need to go out. Seattle used to have Eastlake East, The Easy and the Wildrose. I believe in integration with the straights but I still believe there needs to be more womyn majority spaces. j.) Do be a cool guy. If you are a man coming in alone, they might be a little cautious. It's cool if you don't leer. The womyn come here to get away from that. I would never go to the Wildrose unless I had womyn coming with me. k.) Do tip well. You might get a smile of relief from the staff because Seattle is costly, especially for lesbians. l.) Do keep straight fragility at a minimum. There is no straight hate here. They've hired straight womyn several times. One of them is a famous bartender, Barbie. And if you want to know what real attitude looks like, I've been to a small town lesbian bar where they fought like the old west. So this place is chill. Thanks for reading. We went queer bar hopping tonight and by far Wildrose was the one that passed the vibe check. The bartenders are friendly, the drinks are strong and delicious, personally a fan of the Washington apple (watch out if ur on Zoloft :\). If I could give this place zero stars I would, I came here January 19th. I was on vacation for the weekend coming from California (Los Angeles) my 2 friends and I went to unicorn first, but wanted to go somewhere we can dance. We stumbled across this place, when I entered I went through the wrong way not having a clue where to enter I went under the rope with my ID and money ready to hand over. Right when I was in I got yelled at by an older women yelling at me "who the fuck do you think you are going through there" I was in total shock!! Never in my 30 years have I been spoken to like this, we tried entering the correct way and the women at the door said no you guys aren't allowed that was the owner and she doesn't want you in. It was an honest mistake I wasn't trying to sneak in at all but for the owner to yell at a customer like that shows how she runs her business. No customer service at all and it shows a lot of what kind of human being she is, rude and disgusting! I would not recommend anyone coming here, we ended going to the next bar and had a great time there instead!!! read more

Gotta love all the bad reviews from men and straight(-identified) people, lol. Gee, I wonder why you don't feel welcome in a LESBIAN bar? The entitlement of males and straights knows no bounds, clearly. Anyway, I don't drink, but I stopped in here to get a Shirley Temple to show my support, and on a Tuesday night, every barstool had a woman on it, and many of the tables in the other room had chatting women as well. A few men were present, but they didn't cause any trouble. Two straight couples blundered in at one point and one of the males decided to stare at me, so I stared back until he was uncomfortable. :-) Women of various colours talking, laughing, drinking, and catching up was what I saw. I didn't recognise anything the (female) DJ was playing, but that's probably a good thing, since it gets boring hearing the same old stuff all the time. Nobody was dancing, but it was a Tuesday in the 9 o'clock hour. As a tourist, and a visibly not-straight female I felt very welcome, and would bring friends here. The woman "manning" the door was polite yet assertive, but I guess some people can't handle women being assertive, based on some of the other reviews here. There's a women's and an all-genders bathroom. I visited the women's and it was clean and presentable, though very cramped - if you have a big bag or large coat, it won't fit in the stalls. I think I spotted an ATM, as well. The Shirley Temple was plenty strong. ;-) I had a mild sugar high afterwards. read more

I came in a few weeks ago with three friends (one girl, two guys and we're all straight). We paid the cover (like $3) and I make a beeline for the bathroom. The bathroom is pretty big (from what I can remember), anyways I come out and find my friends at a table. I grab two of them and we hit the dance floor, the DJ is pretty good at playing requests. I was having a blast and dancing pretty damn sloppily in heels. But everyone seemed to be having a good time, we didn't get any glares or anything of the sort. I'm pretty certain there were other guys in there too aside from my friends. Okay so here's why I had an issue, after dancing for like maybe 5-10 minutes we make our way back to the table and right when I sit down the bouncer comes over, "You need to leave, you're really drunk". First of all I wasn't even that drunk because walking around in heels and being drunk are not two things that go hand in hand. I give her my sad face, "Really?" and she's just like "You all need to leave", after we paid a cover and were there for less than 20 minutes. I guess that's cool or not cool to get kicked out of a bar....Interestingly enough as we were walking out of the door I said, "This sucks, but thank you" and I proceeded to hug the bouncer...maybe I did have a little more to drink than I thought. read more

This is the only lesbian bar in Seattle. And I always have an amazing time here. The staff is super friendly and the bartenders are quick. They have a seating area that's pretty good and a dance floor with a dj. The music is good every time. They usually play hip hop when I go, and throw on some old 90s stuff that makes your heart throb. The ladies that come here on the weekends are always beautiful, and guys are welcome too. I recommend everyone to check this place out. Oh and they're right by a hot dog stand for this late night cravings, which is perfect. read more

Trans friend was humiliated here. I went in the other night with friends from out of town. My friend who identifies as she/them was waiting in line for the gender neutral restroom. The line was really long, so she decided to use the restroom marked "female." She hesitated, having had struggled growing up being humiliated because of her gender. I told her that Capitol Hill is very open and accepting, and nobody would bat an eye. Assuming she would be safe, she decided to go into the "female" restroom, which had several more open stalls. The bartender behind the counter shouted at her to GET OUT as soon as she tried to enter. The bartender told her that she "didn't appear to look female," and forced her to leave the restroom. I was honestly so shocked, and truly sad for my friend visiting. It's a freaking bathroom. I'm honestly places like this exist in Capitol Hill. We will never go back to Wild Rose, and we will be sure to tell our friends not to either. My friend walked out of Wild Rose in tears. She said she will be contacting the better business bureau. read more

Had a blast here with my friends two nights in a row. The first night we threw down some killer karaoke and night two was a dance party for the ages. What a fun, all are welcome, no judgements and all love type of vibe! Love the energy of this place. The drinks are strong and well priced. They have a little queue to order drinks so it makes it super easy and you're not fighting people to get to the bar. Great spot! read more

I am writing this review as a queer person who desperately wants more fem queer spaces in the city and it sucks that the time I had at Wildrose (seattles only lesbian bar) was not ideal. The whole time I was there, I felt uneasy and uncomfortable; the staff at the bar seemed morose, the line for the bar and bathroom made me feel trapped (we were there on a Saturday night so it was super busy and hot inside), and most importantly there was an arrest that happened that was really frightening and not handled well by any members of the bar staff from start to finish. For an establishment that claims to be a "safe space for all", the lack of forethought that led a staff member to call the Seattle police on a Black man who was in the dance area, who allegedly grabbed a woman's arm and didn't want to leave the bar was insane and led to a situation that could've ended really really badly for him. The dance area was really crowded, when the altercation started tensions escalated really fast, the music was turned off (putting more pressure and attention on the situation happening between the man and staff), there was no on site security that I could see, and no one present seemed to be trained in non-violent conflict de-escalation. Other bar patrons had to join in the situation because of how intense things got; he was finally forced to leave against his will, and then a police car showed up. While the actions of the police and what happened next cannot be blamed on the staff that called them, the fact that they chose to do so when the "offense" he allegedly committed was so small, instead of calling a non emergency number or handling the situation literally any other way, and also knowing how poorly police in this country handle situations like this, I feel that the staff needs to be held responsible, and people who are thinking about spending time and money here need to be aware of the staff's response and handling of the situation. The police immediately called for backup, a group of people on the sidewalk were yelling and pleading for the group of 5-6 officers to take their hands off the man, who was resisting being put in handcuffs and he fell to the ground and it was unclear what was happening due to all the officers swarming him. Later, a staff member was arguing with another POC bar patron, being really rude for no reason, and tensions were just high all around. No real resolution occurred after the arrest, we were so shaken up we left and don't plan on returning. I want bars and spaces like Wildrose to flourish, as a lesbian, but stuff like this cannot be ignored because staff cultures like this are legitimately dangerous and not acceptable. I hope they invest in some non-armed security or get their staff trained in how to safely and appropriately handle situations like this in the future without having to involve the police and subject their customers to the threat of violence and bodily&mental harm. If you are not a cis white woman do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else. read more

I am glad I am not the only one that feels this place is one star worthy. Matt and I came in at 12:40 (yes, I looked at my watch) on a Thursday evening, and after being carded outside, we were once again carded inside. (Matt even said, we were just carded outside, very politely) After getting carded for the second time, we were then told they were closing and it was last call. We should have just left. We split a beer, then were told within 5 minutes, "we are closing", so I gave her my card to settle up. Then someone behind me said AGAIN, "we are closing" and the server behind the bar was going to tell us again that they were closing until I reminded her that she had my card. I took my card, put on my jacket and Matt and I headed out. What makes my BLOOD BOIL about this place is that I definitely got the feeling that we were the ONLY ones who were rushed out. There were plenty of other people there. I have a feeling as to why we were rushed out: we weren't lesbians. I am one of the most tolerant people in the world and this bothered me so much I almost started to cry. Matt had been in before and had a great time so we decided to give it a chance and grab a beer. Sorry Wildrose, your behavior will NEVER ever make me go in there again. I will tell anyone who asks about you the same. read more

I tend to write only positive reviews on yelp because most people just get on here and hate. But something is going on at the wild rose that I just can't be quiet about. The Wild Rose is predominantly a lesbian bar. Both times I have been in there I have not felt unwelcome as a gay man. however, one of my queer (that's her word) friends took her straight male friend to the rose. Hey it's 2012. Gays and str8s hang out. Anyway the ID checker at the rose had an issue with the straight male an issue about his ID. Apparently the corner or something of the ID was worn down and they wouldn't let him in. This is the only bar he has had this problem with. so I know bars can get in a lot of trouble for letting underage people in so they are careful with IDs so when I heard this story I gave the rose the benefit of the doubt....until tonight. Tonight my queer friend wanted to go with her friends to the rose. We had a good mix of gay bi str8 queer male female. One of my friend's boyfriend is not an American citizen but has a green card. He showed the bartender his green card and she told him he couldn't come in unless she saw his passport. Let's just say that I know for a fact that a green card is a legit form of identification in the USA. Airports which have many more issues with security than a dive lesbian bar accept green cards as valid identification. My friend's boyfriend drove all the way home to get his passport so he could hang out with us. We should have probably just left but if he had left then the terrorists win. I should mention that we just went in for a drink , we kept to ourselves, we weren't loud and we were not causing problems Now I realize as a gay man that gay and lesbians have their own bars and I think for gay culture that is important. But just as not ok for heterosexual establishments to discriminate against gays, the Rose cannot discriminate against heterosexual men. And that is what is happening. It's 2012 Wildrose! Some of us are evolved enough to like each other regardless of our gender, race, or sexual orientation. A gay establishment of all places should understand that! Shame on you! The community on Capitol Hill deserves better than this type if behavior in 2012. I wish gay women in Seattle had other choices for bar socializing than the Wildrose. read more

The Wildrose is not known for its food, the average age of the customers is proably 23, and hell will freeze over before a bartender decides to crack a smile--- but the tacos on Tuesday are surprisingly great. Pick meat or black bean with the usual sides at a buck a piece and knock 'em back with a $2 Sol. And contrary to belief, it doesn't matter if you're male or female, straight or gay, trannie or bi---those bartenders are crabby with everyone. Shellia is just plain amazing and it's always a joy when I get to see her, as well as several of the other staff members. So, here's the deal. The Wildrose is a bar. It is an establishment, and a seedy, dark, crumbling one at that. It is NOT the answer to all your begotten woes of social inability. Walking in the door doesn't mean you are immediately going to be the center of attention and fawned over. Sorry people... if you want people to talk to you, or flirt with you... you should be willing to take that step. It's not the 'Rose's fault. The nature of the lesbian community in Seattle isn't overly welcoming, I have to admit. Typically, we travel in packs. If you try and weasel your way in, you'll probably be cast aside with a nasty glare and an up turned nose. The trick my friends is to get ONE of the pack away from the others, maybe while she is ordering a drink... and then take a stab at starting a conversation. The only way you'll get into an existing pack is to be brought in by one of them. So quit your belly-aching about how mean or rude they are, that's part of the charm. The bar itself is unpretentious... if the patrons seem pretentious to you, this might not be the best place for you to frequent. All that aside.... the 'Rose is great. The drinks are strong and cheap as all hell, the food is really good considering the way the place looks at first glance, and the bar stools are comfortable. They have a good jukebox, there is ALWAYS something going on, whether its a DJ or karaoke or a band. Overall, its a a great place. It's the cornerstone of the lesbian community, like it or not. I would love to give this place a higer rating, but there is a lot of customer service work that needs to be done first. Don't bother entering and unless you are a lesbian of the sort that the bartendress wants to wait on. I ordered drinks and asked the blond bartender some questions while I was waiting for my food order. Sher put herself on the spot as if she was being interogated. I simply asked what the well beer was, so I could save a few dollars. She replied saying that she couldn't "give me the answer I wanted to hear." What a line of crap! Everything I said to her from this point on out was answered with attitude. The appetizers they brought be were something that you could buy at Costco and heat up in a microwave. I am very dissapointed with my visit here, and even wonder if it's worth another visit to try and see if this place is worth a better rating. My team, called "Pussies on the Hill," is 3 for 3 at winning pub trivia at the Wild Rose. Yeah, I know it's a lesbian bar, but it's the best place that has good, fun pub trivia on Monday nights. Keri (or Teri) is the lovely hostess who has genially put up with our drunken antics and heckling. The bartender chastised me once for yelling at him, but I deserved it for being a douche. The food is OK, but the beer special of the day is cheap: only $2.50 for a pint! The bathroom is super narrow. If you have a fat ass, you will have problems maneuvering through it. I visited this bar with high hopes of meeting the lesbian community of Seattle only to be let down with the frightening glares of fellow customers . How dare I set foot in *their* bar. Not what I expected at all. I'm from Texas and our lez bars are pretty lame so I envisioned a bar full of biker dykes which isn't my cup of tea, but I was curious enough to check it out with mi lady. You will definitely see some characters here - a biker dyke or two, a couple of wannabe Rico Suave studs that think they own the dance floor, an old straight woman's third bachelorette party and a creepy old guy trying to get in where he fits in. It was an interesting night to say the least. Mixed crowd, cheap beer, friendly people, DJ Lady Jane playing some oldies but goodies and a decently good time if you're into people watching and dancing. If you're going for the women lower your standards by like 4 notches (on a scale of 1-4) and you shouldn't be disappointed... but then again maybe you will. 5 stars because the DJ was solid and I had a fucking blast people watching and laughing with my girl. We will be back for those two reasons only. read more

I can't believe this place hasn't been slapped with a law suit yet because of their security guard. We went out for a bachelorette party last night and we watched the black security lady snatch water out of a guys hand when he walked out the door, no warning, no "hey you can't bring your drink outside" she just snatched it out of his hand and which caused it to spill all over him. He tried to explain it was water but she wouldn't let him speak and told him if he wanted to hydrate to go to the pool... she was checking a friends ID and told the friend to back up and get her pussy off her leg. She is the first person you meet when entering this place so I can't image her behavior is good for business. It's only a matter of time before she pushes the wrong person and the place gets sued. There are so many other bars in Capital Hill, don't waste your time at this place. read more
