We ate here twice during our stay in Mentone, once for supper and then the next day for lunch. We heard it was busy so we made a reservation for the evening meal and was seated promptly. We got there for lunch around 10:30 and got our names on the list so we got seated pretty soon after they started seating at 11. The experience was good both times. We both had the hamburger steak with veggies and mashed potatoes for supper and it was good, fresh flavorful food though it lacked a little salt for my taste. I had the buttermilk pie for dessert and it was delicious. My wife had the hummingbird cake and it was good as well. For lunch I had the brunch sampler with ham and cheese quiche. Everything on my plate was fresh, flavorful and well seasoned. The tomato pie was something I had never had and I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of fresh herbs and tomatoes with the cheese. My wife had a ham and cheese sandwich with chips and it was good but nothing to write home about. The eclectic, artsy (maybe even hippie) vibe is something you'll either enjoy or not. We would recommend!! We made reservations (by phone only-they called us back when we left a message). We were advised that they do not serve alcohol, but you are welcome to bring your own. We were there Friday night 30 minutes before our reservations. The Hostess was very friendly, and it was not a problem. It was obvious that there are regulars by the family like reception the group behind us received. My husband almost always asks the server, "What's your favorite thing on the menu." Unless they say chicken tenders, this is very successful. Our server said that the BBQ bacon smothered chicken and loaded tomato pie over angel hair pasta was her favorites. Of course, that was what we ordered. Our server brought a wine bottle opener and 2 wine glasses for our wine that we brought with us. We were charged $0 for a corking fee. This was appreciated. The homemade blue cheese was amazing!! Both meals were delicious. Other reviews said the sides were cold. I would prefer that the squash and smashed potatoes were warmer. The Wildflower Cafe was recommended to us by many locals during our stay in Mentone. We arrived at the perfect time (11 AM) with only a 15 minute wait. It's a very quirky restaurant with a store throughout that you can browse while waiting for your table. I was really excited to try the Pesto Grilled Cheese, but they were out of pesto. It was still a good meal but I imagine the pesto made it better. The chicken and rice soup was delicious and perfect for a cold day. From the moment we sat at our table, our service was poor. We ordered drinks twice because the waitress forgot she already took our order. She never brought out the coffee. The food was slow but I am very understanding of a potentially short-staffed day and was not upset. It wasn't until the 2 tables next to us (who arrived after us) got their food, checks, and left before we received our food. When we asked for the checks, it took 30+ minutes. The manager was walking around asking everyone about their experience and we expressed concern about our checks. She said it was because our checks were split and this was normal to wait this long. Prime Rib was over priced for the cut of meat and layered in I guess their signature garlic cream sauce. Black and Blue Prime Rib. Found very little Blue Cheese. Sister Schubert rolls with the sauce were good, but it was also in the fettuccine that my friends ordered. OVERLOAD...... Strawberry sauce for crepes was very good. Friends did enjoy the peanut butter pie. So maybe next time I visit, coffee and dessert only. We also ordered a piece of peanut butter pie and chess pie. The peanut butter pie was SO rich and so delicious. It had every aspect of deliciousness that you are looking for when eating a slice of pie. The true winner, is the homemade chess pie. If your a huge fan of chess pie like I am you will understand how wonderful this pie is. I think I could easily eat the entire pie, with no regrets. The restaurant and store itself is absolutely adorable! Heard a lot about wildflower cafe before deciding to ride up there. We drove about an hour and enjoyed the scenery on the way up. The food was fantastic and the restaurant was very accommodating for my 2 small children. I got a burger and my wife got pasta. We both got desert, the peanut butter pie and buttermilk custard. We strongly recommend everything they offer and a fantastic gift shop area. Just a short walk or drive from some beautiful sights. The wait was very bareable (30 minutes) and the live music was a huge plus, even played music for my children. read more

Sometimes I feel restaurants get really overhyped...but this is not one of those times. Wildflower Cafe really does deserve all the press it gets. We visited over my spring break. My family and I have been desperate to try this place; we tried once before around Thanksgiving but they were simply too busy. Get a reservation if you ever plan on coming at a time where they MIGHT be seeing a lot of people. However, on a quiet Wednesday afternoon, we had no problems getting in. The gentleman who showed us to our table was very friendly and polite and told us about some of the quirky art in the front room. The Wildflower Cafe is a quirky place, overall: a kind of dilapidated exterior, lots of wacky sculptures and paintings and pictures...it suits this artsy little mountain town. Our waitress was friendly. She seemed to be working alone, which made her a little bit slower than would be absolutely ideal, but we weren't in a rush, so no worries. We started with the home cooked kettle chips and ranch. $7 bucks seemed a bit high, but after we saw the portion size and ate a couple of the delightfully crunchy, salty chips, we were won over. Really good! I had a sweet tea to drink. Good tea, though if I'm being extra nit picky I'd say there was way too much ice in the glass. Again, not a huge deal. I had the grilled cheese with bacon. It was amaaaaazing! Really solid, not funky/artificial cheddar cheese, crusty bread absolutely saturated with butter or mayonnaise (not sure how they prefer to make grilled cheese but either way it made the bread super smooth and rich tasting), and the bacon was the perfect amount of crispness, nice and smoky. More kettle chips, too, to sop up every remaining drop of ranch. My parents shared the brunch sampler, which comes with a piece of quiche, tomato pie, fresh fruit, and a strawberry crepe. The fruit was surprisingly good for the time of year (early March). Although they liked both the quiche and the tomato pie, they surprised themselves in preferring the quiche. Although Wildflower Cafe is famous for tomato pie, it couldn't compare to the gooey, rich goodness of the ham and cheese quiche. The crepe was also delightful - hot, super thin, and with definitely homemade strawberry spread and cream cheese on the inside. We finished it off with a slice of derby pie for dessert. It was served almost a little too hot, as the syrup oozed all over the plate, but it still had a lovely balance of chocolate and pecan flavor, the whipped cream was fresh and light, and the crust was super buttery. A note about the price - it is a little expensive, but I didn't see any nearby grocery store, so I imagine getting ingredients that are obviously so high quality and fresh up here is no cheap feat. Also, it's obvious great care and thought is put into every single dish. In my book, it's well worth it! I can't wait to return. read more

I saw someone else on here say they had the best burger ever there, and to them I say, please consider going to your local Burger King. $18 dang dollar burger and I coulda slapped some cheese on the dirt outside and ate that and had the same experience. Got a wonderful treat yesterday! My mom in Alabama and I decided to meet in Mentone, AL. It's about halfway between our homes and we have seen each other due to Covid. We had enjoyed our visits to the Wildflower Cafe so much previously, we decided to make it our destination for a visit. When we pulled in, we were very happy to find the restaurant open, and serving inside. They only were allowing a third of their tables to be sat, for the safety of their customers and their staff. From what we could tell, they were taking every precaution. We both already had an idea of what we wanted. Their menu is such that whatever you decide on, the other options haunt you until you can get back, lol. My mom decided on the Tomato pie and a side salad, which came with fresh parmesan slivers. I decided on the creamy tomato basil bisque and pesto provolone grilled cheese sandwich. Both were so delicious!!!! We didn't want to end our visit, so we ordered a piece of their peanut butter pie and coffee. Oh my goodness. Seriously rich and oh so tasty!!! While we relaxed over our desert, the restaurant owner Moon came by and we had a nice chat about our wonderful memories at her place. She said it will be a while before things are back to "normal"....John, the guitar fellow wants to come back when it's safe to visit the tables, singing along with patrons like ourselves and playing his guitar. Me, my sister, and mom are visiting Mentone for the weekend and we were automatically drawn to the the Wildflower Cafe. They have a diverse menu and so many options for beverages. The strawberry lemonade was the best strawberry lemonade I have ever had, and I may be calling in an order for it every day while we're here. My entree was the Sesame Kale Burger. It had a sesame bun, locally sourced kale, avocado, portobello mushroom, and an aioli sauce. It was INCREDIBLE. I would highly recommend it. Great little place for a brunch/lunch getaway. Small menu, but great choices. Tomato salad was fantastic and that was someone's else's plate. I had an awesome ham and cheese on sourdough bread. This was not a regular sandwich. It was larger than the norm and still delicious. Ham was sliced and topped with ooey gooey cheddar cheese. We planned to dine at this restaurant on a Saturday evening around 4, as we were going to be in the area at that time, so we went for the early bird meal. Unfortunately it was all booked up and after waiting for some time, we were told there wouldn't be a table for us. We had our hearts set on trying it, so we just ordered some food to-go. I ordered the Tomato Pie Entree, which was a slice of their house-made tomato pie served over a bed of angel hair pasta tossed in Alfredo sauce. I had the vegetarian option because I was told that the grilled chicken version would take significantly longer. It was ok, certainly tasty, but not everything I expected it to be after reading a good number of great reviews about the menu item. My husband went in for the win and ordered the prime rib, which was AMAZING. A huge serving of prime rib cooked perfectly medium rare was served alongside garlic mashed potatoes and roasted broccoli. The sides were just ok but the prime rib was awesome. It was certainly worth the money; around $35 for the entree. My only qualms were that the staff seemed a bit unorganized from the moment we walked in the door and that overall the food was lacking flavor. How great is this place? They open at 11, but on both days last week when we had lunch at Wildflower the wait time was already 45 minutes by 11 because of all of the eager diners who started arriving and getting on the list at 10:30 or so. The vibe is all fun and funky, but in such a sweet, caring way. Since we were staying in Mentone for the week we got our food to go. The owner/manager (I think I heard her say her name was Moon, but if that's not her name, it should be) is so professional in how she interacts with customers and her staff. The time she took with us to accommodate my wife's dietary limitations was extraordinary, and she did it while at the same time orchestrating what was going on up front and also back in the kitchen. And the food! For my wife, a GF pizza one day with ham (because their pepperoni like most contains garlic), cheese, spinach, and black olives; it was exceptional. I had the vegetable plate with blackeyed peas, garlic smashed potatoes, grilled veggies, and a grilled bbq portobello cap that was one of the best things I have eaten in awhile. The second day we both had the Canyon burger, my wife's on GF bread, both of us with homemade kettle chips. Delicious burger and equally delicious chips.
