The food here is exceptional. In my opinion I would never try to compare this to Cracker Barrel, other than the eclectic collection of rustic antiques maybe and the small gift shop from local craftsman. I was able to enjoy the breakfast brunch sampler which included ham and cheese quiche, a tomato pie, and a strawberry crêpe with fresh fruit. I appreciated the selection of quality teas, locally made dessert options also a plus. Not sure why yelpers have been so up appreciate this locally owned business. So I do hope that you guys will read through some these reviews with an open mind. We waited, probably about 20 minutes to be seated, which isn't too bad, especially without reservations and as another yelper mentioned wait times. The prices were very reasonable compared to some of the mass chain restaurants you find or even other spots outside of Mentone. The only critique I have would be for our server savanah. She kind of rushed us a little bit with bringing us a check before we were quite finished. I chalk it up to her being young and maybe not as experienced, but she was very friendly. read more

This is a quirky little eatery with a limited menu and things to purchase inside. There are quite a few watercolor paintings and a few other knickknacks including homemade goats milk soap. My girlfriend got the tomato pie and a mixed green salad with blue cheese dressing. I got the grilled ham and cheese sandwich with bacon, served on sourdough bread, and a side of kettle chips. I also got a mixed green salad with blue cheese dressing. We got an appetizer of Heavenly Parmesan Dipping sauce which comes with nine yeast rolls for dipping. The appetizer of yeast rolls with the Parmesan dipping sauce was very good. The rolls were freshly baked, soft and the Parmesan dipping sauce was a cheesy delight. The mixed green salads were good. The greens appear to be locally sourced, were fresh and the blue cheese dressing was very good. My girlfriend really liked her tomato pie. She said it tasted good. I enjoyed the toasted ham and cheese sandwich with bacon. The bread was toasted really well and the bacon was very crispy. It comes topped with a honey mustard sauce which compliments the sandwich well. The kettle chips were good. Service was very good here and our server was very attentive. We also got pie to go. I got the peanut butter pie which came with a side of chocolate sauce. It was very good and tasty. It's very rich and glad I got it to go for later eating. My girlfriend got the buttermilk pie and said it was excellent. If you're visiting Mentone, I highly recommend you visit Wildflower Cafe. They were a little busy when we arrived. Lunch menu is 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on Friday and Saturday and no reservations are required. Dinner menu is 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays and they highly recommend reservations. Quaint. Home cooking. Sweet servers. We sat in the sun room; it was a little chilly but definitely not as cold as outside. I had the spinach parmesan quiche and kiddo had butter pasta with grilled chicken. My quiche was good and I typically am not a quiche kind of person! Took the new 911 for a spin up to Mentone to have lunch. Decided to try the Wildflower Cafe. Plan on waiting for a table at lunch when its nice weather outside as there was a crowd and we wound up waiting for 1 hr to be seated. No biggie as we are used to that sort of place in CA. The food was really good, the canyon burger was DELICIOUS!! Hats off to the grill god cooking that burger. My gal had the grilled cheese pesto sandwich with chicken; she said it was tasty and "alright". I tasted it and it seemed really good to me. She's a foodie and has good taste. Is it me, or is it a certain type of person that lives in an area like Mentone and serves food. They all seem to be granola types. Just an observation after having been to many major national park areas and out-door types environments. Anyway, go for the food. Not a huge menu but still very good. I missed out on the tomato pie but heard rave reviews on it after I got back home. Guess we need to make another trip to try just that. You have to go try it, you really do. We have been here many times over the years. The first few visits were excellent. The last two were more than disappointing. Today, the wait was long both waiting for a table and waiting for the food. The food arrived cold and the ingredients did not taste fresh. The shrimp and grits were not good. They should have been called Hint of Shrimp and creamed grits. The shrimp was difficult to detect, the grits had no substance and no flavor. It's absolutely gorgeous in Mentone. This place is so quaint. I love the various rooms and all the decor. The mountain shrimp grits were the best thing we had. Utterly delicious- it was like a southern take on shrimp risotto. And even though it was an appetizer, the portion was so huge you could easily have it as your meal. My wife and I ate here for Valentine's Day with reservations because we rented a house nearby for the weekend. Reservations are recommended because there are very few dining options in the area, so they have a bit of a monopoly from what I could tell. My wife enjoyed the kitschiness of this place. While I certainly enjoy kitschiness when done right, I found this place to be a hot mess selling itself as kitschy. Or as they say on one of their signs, a "hippy Cracker Barrel." While that sounds clever, the experience of this place came across, to me, as messy, dirty, and unkept. We ordered rolls with a cheese sauce as an appetizer. It did not make a good first impression. I'm fairly certain the rolls we received were of the frozen variety. The flavor and texture were abysmal. The cheese sauce was just an odd accompaniment. It would be great with nachos, but rolls? I ordered a filet with mashed potatoes and rice pilaf (because the vegetables offered did not appeal to me) which came with a side salad. The salad was lukewarm and consisted mostly of mesclun and spinach, which may sound ok, but with the temperature being off, everything was limp and created a weird mouthfeel. My wife's meal came with soup, which she said enjoyed. Overall, our respective entrees were good. They cooked my steak properly, so that's a plus, but overall there was nothing special about how it was prepared or served. (See pics) They also cooked the salmon well (see pics) and my wife said enjoyed that too. For dessert, my wife had a pecan pie, which she shared with me. It was tasty but too sweet for my liking, but that's not a commentary on the pie itself. My wife enjoyed it. Lastly, our server was a very pleasant woman, who provided great service throughout our meal. In conclusion, I think the choice to dine here is ultimately a matter of personal preference and what dining options you have. I wouldn't eat here again - the atmosphere was just weird/off-putting and the quality/flavor of the food was just meh. I've simply had better food at chain restaurants. We were camping at DeSoto state park campground and decided to go for lunch. This was an awesome find. The decor was so interesting and it also has a gift shop with many local items. This restaurant is very popular so for dinner reservations are highly recommended but lunch is walk in. Our server Claire was very friendly and helpful. We ordered the tomato pie as an appetizer it was very tasty. My hubby ordered the shrimp and grits with sausage. He said it was the best he has had anywhere. I had the chicken salad sandwich in sourdough bread with kettle chips. The chicken salad is made in house and it was amazing. He wandered throughout the restaurant in its various small rooms and would at times stand in one spot near tables or people standing and waiting to be seated while he played 3-5 songs. Thankfully he did not linger by our table side. We were not there to hear him but to eat. Tomato pie, sounded amazing but flavor not a favorite. A bit too sour/tart. Portobello soup needed some salt to increase its flavor. It was ok. Grilled salmon was good. Crustless quiche ham and cheese is what one would expect. Not much flavor though. Peanut butter pie: crust was best part about it. Carrot Cake: was a typical carrot cake. Small mixed green salad with shaved Parmesan and cherry tomatoes was the highlight. It was cold and just the right amount. Clean simple food and good. Server was very efficient. Wait was about 15 minutes. Price: high. With tip we paid $92. Would not go back. We came from Chattanooga and it took about an hour. We rushed for lunch because we knew they were closed at 2 PM., forgetting their time is an hour behind ours. The Restaurant is a ramshackle, funky café with Art all through it. We seated on bus seats at our table with little lamps. My husband had the mushroom burger and said it was delicious. I had a sampler plate with tomato pie, quiche, and a strawberry crêpe. My food was delicious. We both ordered a dessert, peanut butter pie and derby pie. We both tasted each other's, and they were homemade and delicious. The food was worth a trip. We enjoyed a little artist shop down from it on the same side of the street. I have always wanted to try the Wildflower as it's frequently mentioned on "best of Alabama" lists. It's a precious place, love the atmosphere, and they have some cute things for sale. We passed by on our way back to our cabin in Menlo after hiking Cloudland Canyon. We got there at about 3, and they do stop taking tables from 3-4pm (though they aren't exactly closed as they still have tables). No worries, they said we could come back at 4 and so we did. I got the loaded tomato pie and my husband ordered the black & bleu hamburger steak. Both came with salads - the strawberry balsamic was one of the best dressings I've ever had, and husband thought the ranch was great. We both enjoyed our food - portions were large and filling. I'm not sure I understood the idea of eating the tomato pie over the pasta - I ate them separately instead and enjoyed it better that way. The pie was very fresh and rustic, it was much lighter than other tomato pies I've had elsewhere (could have had just a little less crust though). The chicken in the angel hair pasta was deliciously cooked, loved the cream sauce too. I was skeptical about the vegetables but my non-vegetable eating husband ate every bit of his! We loved the spice on them. He did enjoy the hamburger steak, thought it could use a little bit more seasoning. Mashed potatoes were good. We ordered peanut butter pie for dessert which was delicious (very peanut buttery), it was a nice big piece that we split. They had great sweet tea too! We had a wonderful server who was serving the whole room we were in, he stayed busy! We enjoyed our experience and would definitely go back, but preferably for lunch. I've passed Wildflower Cafe several times when I make my Georgia visits and this time decided to stop by to check it out. The place is so cute and very eclectic. The service was great. Grace my server, was very friendly and sweet. She even recommended the spinach quiche. I tried the brunch sampler which consisted of their tomato pie which I never heard of, a slice of their crustless spinach quiche, crepe with strawberry puree and fruit. It was all delicious and so worth it. If you ever drive through or visit Mentone, make sure you stop and visit Wildflower Cafe. For years I've heard all about this place. The famed "tomato pie" and the charming mountain hideaway that was a "must see" for travelers. I stopped in and found what was the "Deliverance" of culinary adventures.... Bottom line: you can go in the woods to eat - but you may get screwed. Overpriced. Mediocre. Cold Food. Here are my expanded thoughts: From the outside the Wildflower Cafe is as charming as I imagined. Nestled just off the road in beautiful area that looks like a fairy house. The atmosphere was warm and tables are scattered about the inside of a converted cabin. There is plenty of room and it's well lit. The tables are covered in plexiglass and they allow customers to put business cards at will under them. It's tacky, messy, and completely cheapens the vibe. The restaurant also serves as a gift shop and the locally made art is packed on the walls throughout for purchase. It's not particularly good art and very over priced -- but then art is subjective and maybe just not my taste. Moving on. The text on the menu is tiny and almost illegible. And the prices were more than I expected - but not overpriced for what I would normally pay for fine dining experience. I was surprised that the server heavily recommended the $30 chopped steak - so I bit on the recommendation. My friend got the $57 fillet. This is where it went south: First it's BYOB. Not the end of the world and I should have maybe checked. But it was disappointing not having wine as an option. The beverages were served in "to go" plastic cups. At first it wasn't a big surprise - just a little different. Excited to try the "Tomato Pie" - we ordered one for an appetizer. It sucked. A pre made pie shell the size of a Swanson's Pot Pie with four slices of Roma tomatoes and covered with so much cheese you couldn't taste anything else. It was bland - and just not the quality we expected. And strangely it was served on a paper plate. Remember that. Next came the salads. In a paper cup. A tiny CUP. The ramekin of dressing was almost as big. And the salad itself was just a pinch of spring mix from a bag - just lettuce, couple of parm shavings, and that's it. The paper cup is so awkward that it would tip over when trying to eat it with metal dinnerware. But the, "Am I on a hidden camera?," moment comes when the highly overpriced entrees with cold sides are delivered on PAPER PLATES!!! Look - I'm not too good for a paper plate - but if I am ordering a $57 hunk of prime beef - would a warm ceramic plate be too much. Of course it was medium rare, the blood soaked into the plate, and the serrated knife just made a mess of it all. The hamburger steak was embarrassing. Nothing special. Just a burger patty covered in a blue cheese white sauce. Presented as well as you can on a paper plate I guess. It was served atop spinach leaves that just wilted and gave everything a weird taste. The blue cheese sauce was disgusting. The sides were cold. Not by a little - but room temp at best. I finally asked about the paper and plastic ware and was told they had a plumbing issue that prevented them from using a dishwasher. They also indicated it had been a persistent problem for a while and they have been using paper products since. I thought it couldn't get any more strange - but a quick bathroom stop on the way out proved otherwise (see pics). I'll avoid this stop in the future. read more

I finally was able to go the Wildflower Cafe. Listed as one of the 100 places to eat before you die. We came here for lunch and pretty much got here when it opened. I'm glad we did because although we didn't have to wait to order, it was a good wait for our food. This gave us time to browse the gift shop, use the bathroom, and find a table outside. They are still not seating anyone inside. It was a beautiful day so we didn't mind sitting outside. For lunch I ordered the chicken salad club salad. It was a huge sandwich. I got it on Wheatberry bread, which I liked a lot. You could also have gotten it on sourdough. It came with kettle chips which are nice and crunchy. The only thing missing was a pickle. I like a pickle with my chips. Overall, it was very good. I would eat here again. read more

BE AWARE! came on a Saturday night and the restaurant never opened. No sign saying they wouldn't be open and they did not post a note on Facebook indicating that they would be closed. A long line of people at 4PM on a Saturday had to leave. Given that there are VERY few places in the town, the next nearest restaurant said they were booked (despite a number of empty tables). I won't return because I don't want to take the risk that they will be closed since there are few other options in town. read more
