The Belding House fit both of these criteria and then vastly exceeded our expectations. Breakfast was just wonderful, although there was far too much of it. A white-wine-poached pear, two cream-cheese-blueberry blintzes, maple sausages, fresh fruit, real whipped cream, and best of all some lemon currant scones that stole the show. We interrogated one of the owners at length about how he got them to be so tender (apparently the key is how he whips the butter) and successfully begged them to pack us a few more for the road. But that's not all. The rooms are lovely, in a quaint-bed-and-breakfast way, the place has nice patios and foliage, and fronts on a trail through the woods. The owners, Clif and Larry, are both impossibly friendly and fascinating to talk to, and their dog Basel (Basil?) is a sweet thing with a grass allergy. The only two things that were less than perfect were 1, that it was hard to enjoy the aforementioned patios and outdoor spaces in light of the overwhelming number of mosquitos, and 2, that the water from the taps and shower had the faint odor of sulfur. Neither is their fault (I assume the sulfur is the result of well water or somesuch), and in any case, these imperfections were overwhelmed by the scone.

From an abundance of tea options to daily fresh cookies to some wonderful recommendations, we were comfortable from the start of our stay to the end. The tea and coffee stations were superb...I'm a diehard coffee drinker but the tea station (selections and dainty china teacups) hooked me. The yummy homemade cookies, ice water, snacks and sodas were such lovely touches! The books, history, information, touristy flyers etc WOW! Curl up by a fireplace or fire pit, sink into a chair, kick off your shoes (oops, right they were already off and left at the door!) revised that early escape plan .....I did not want to leave! Breakfast was beyond amazing and delicious (omelet-eye rolling fresh gooey cheese, and fresh fruit.) The other guests were mostly returning guest or friend of someone who had stayed here. Friendliest people ever! Felt very at home with this entire way too short stay. The total kicker for me was when I returned home....took 425 leaf peeping and Vermont photos and the only ones I truly loved and felt were spectacular were taken in the back yard of the Mad River Tavern!!! Everyone is super nice and fun to talk to, both owner and guests alike. Breakfast is with everyone or you can take it back and eat in your room if you want more privacy. We loved the historic town of Waitsfield. Sugarbush is only 15 minutes away. Another day we had a lovely drive to the Van Trapp resort where we cross country skied. My husband paid $60 for the romance package which as I said was beautiful, however the rose petals were fake, not worth the $60! I got the scrambled eggs with bacon and orange juice. The eggs were cooked just the way I liked them and the hostess was more than accommodating even if I was late and had come back from an early morning nap, I mean yoga lesson. I would happily come here again for a little R&R if given the chance.

The grounds are a small working farm - although we visited in early spring, so not much to see there. The inn has the quirky charm of a house that has probably seen many lives. The lounge areas have creaky wooden floors and other original features. The decor is a mix of farmhouse antiques balanced with more recent comfortable pieces. We had the "Love" room which had a giant bathroom with a jacuzzi bath/shower and a comfortable bed with and antique iron bed frame. The room was clean. The breakfast was made to order (eggs, omelettes, pancakes, yogurt or grain bowl) and enjoyed in a spacious dining room that also had self-service tea and cookies most of the day. The hosts are very accommodating. There is a network of trails accessible from the parking lot. Overall a great Vermont experience and a good value.
