Also had great local ales and ciders on tap and a full bar. A part of the 1824 inn. Service was attentive, with local teens learning the business waiting on you. The Belding House fit both of these criteria and then vastly exceeded our expectations. Breakfast was just wonderful, although there was far too much of it. A white-wine-poached pear, two cream-cheese-blueberry blintzes, maple sausages, fresh fruit, real whipped cream, and best of all some lemon currant scones that stole the show. We interrogated one of the owners at length about how he got them to be so tender (apparently the key is how he whips the butter) and successfully begged them to pack us a few more for the road. These were quite plausibly the equal of Tartine's--reviewed here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/tartine-bakery-san-francisco#hrid:COpiEQydtPe-sRXUsrcygw--I would go back for the scone alone. But that's not all. The rooms are lovely, in a quaint-bed-and-breakfast way, the place has nice patios and foliage, and fronts on a trail through the woods. The owners, Clif and Larry, are both impossibly friendly and fascinating to talk to, and their dog Basel (Basil?) is a sweet thing with a grass allergy. The only two things that were less than perfect were 1, that it was hard to enjoy the aforementioned patios and outdoor spaces in light of the overwhelming number of mosquitos, and 2, that the water from the taps and shower had the faint odor of sulfur. Neither is their fault (I assume the sulfur is the result of well water or somesuch), and in any case, these imperfections were overwhelmed by the scone.

For years I stayed somewhere new every time I visited Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, but what I…read morereally wanted was one place I'd want to return to again and again, somewhere that felt like a second home. A year ago I found it at Grünberg Haus, and I've been coming back again this summer--and it was the best tripe yet by far! Duane is the kind of host you don't forget. He seems to know what you need before you do, and you can feel how much he genuinely cares about everyone who walks through the door. I was traveling solo to meet up with friends and got there before anyone else arrived. Duane met me right in the parking lot, helped me get settled. Little touches like that set the tone for the whole stay. I stayed in the Inn and it was perfect. The bed was incredibly comfortable, everything was spotless, and the decor is full of personality and details you will never get tired of discovering. Mostly, though, it was just relaxing. I spent a lot of time just hanging out doing nothing but listening to the woods around me. As a lifelong New Yorker, it was the exact opposite of my daily life, and exactly what I needed. Breakfast is where Duane really shines. He is the heart and soul of Grünberg Haus and a true culinary genius. Every morning he cooked something different and every single one was a winner: egg, ham, and cheese; pancakes and eggs; breakfast tacos. And that yogurt and berry parfait... I'm still dreaming about it. The inn itself is gorgeous, decked out with great pop culture posters and all kinds of fun finds. My friends and I spent evenings hanging out in the cozy living room with a few drinks, and it was a blast. Duane also recently put in a new wifi system that boosted the internet across the entire property, so staying connected was never an issue, even out in the cabin. In the gathering room of the Inn, he's got an incredible selection of records! And if you want to watch anything, the projector is great. The location can't be beat. You're about five minutes from downtown Waterbury, home to one of my favorite bars anywhere, Blackback Pub, plus Freak Folk Brewing, Prohibition Pig, and Hen of the Wood, where I had an unforgettable dinner. If you want something with far more character than a standard hotel, I can't recommend Grünberg Haus enough. Also, Neko is the BEST!

Prepare to have your day begin with a thoughtfully-curated, multi-course selection of delicious food. Breakfast starts off with a fresh scone (the vanilla Fig ones were our favorite) and then a creative fruit plate of sorts, and, finally, the showstopper (puff pancakes with maple bacon, breakfast cubanos to name a few). Starting your day off with these elaborate breakfasts is truly such a treat. The location: Incredible. Tons of restaurants (we loved Peasant), amazing breweries (Lawsons!), scenic hikes (can snowshoe from the property), skiing and more! There is even a farm with pigs / cows/ tractors 2 minutes from the property that our toddler son went absolutely bananas for. The property: Magical. Hard to describe the serenity that the property espouses. It is truly magic. The main Inn is so cozy with a roaring fire every morning and night, amazing guests to chat with and cookies to enjoy by the fire after a long day of skiing / snow-shoeing / drinking beer - whatever floats your boat. There is also an incredible hot tub and cozy robes to take advantage of. The Innkeepers, Mick and Karen: no words can describe how amazing they are. There is a reason why every other review mentions them -- they are warm, caring and make you feel so incredibly welcome in their place. You feel as though you are staying with your family at the most amazing, cozy place you could possibly imagine. It is clear they care deeply about their guests and go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
