Great food. Stopped in a client. Had the burger. A little too much tartar sauce but otherwise good. Fries were very good as well.

    G & R Tavern - Infamous Fried Bologna Sandwich

Home of the Famous Bologna Sandwich…read more That's the bold claim G & R Tavern has been making in Waldo, Ohio for more than 60 years, and judging by the line waiting outside when we arrived shortly after noon, plenty of people believe it. Located in a village of about 300 residents, G & R Tavern has become one of Ohio's most popular destination restaurants. Visitors come from all over the state to try the sandwich that put this small-town tavern on the map. Founded in 1962 by George Yake and Roy Klingel, G & R Tavern has become a true Ohio institution. In 1985, Rick's family purchased the restaurant and has continued the tradition ever since. During our visit, I had the opportunity to speak with Rick and learn that the next generation is already preparing to carry on the family tradition. In a time when many independent restaurants struggle to survive from one generation to the next, that's something worth celebrating. The atmosphere is exactly what longtime fans have come to love. Wood-paneled walls, a bustling dining room, homemade pies in the dessert case, and an old-school charm that feels increasingly rare today. Even the cash-only policy somehow feels right at home here. As for the famous sandwich, it continues to live up to its reputation. This Ohio classic features a thick-cut slice of fried bologna topped with melted American cheese, sweet pickles, and onion on a soft bun. It's simple, flavorful, and easy to understand why people continue making the trip to Waldo year after year. Perhaps the strongest endorsement came from my wife, who ordered the fried bologna sandwich as well. That's not something she would normally choose, but she thoroughly enjoyed it. The fries were hot and crispy and made a great companion to the meal. Some places become popular for a season. Places like G & R Tavern become part of Ohio's history. Not everyone's thing but it's definitely MY thing. Staff is friendly and moves quickly if you can find a seat. This place fills up. Truely an American treasure.

It's open, there is a bar to your right as you enter and lots of seating to your right and front. Can eat at bar. We sat, mimosas and bloodies available. Or for that matter- whatever you can think of. They have scotch eggs swimming in a bowl of gravy... yes gravy... and it was delicious. Definitely a Mexican "flair" with lots of black beans, sauces, etc. I stuck with a Belt sandwich - nice and crispy bread with bacon, egg, lettuce, tomato. Friendly service and lots of value! Glad we found this spot since we are headed to Ohio a few times a year.

We did not have a good experience this time. Our bartender Shanna was less than enthusiastic about serving us. She had an attitude & was yawning Alot! We ordered margaritas, which were good as always. Then we ordered our dinner. i ordered the perch dinner W fries & coleslaw. The perch was good, the fries were way overdone & coleslaw bland. My friend ordered prime rib medium rare. The rib was served Medium to Medium well. Shanna took it away & brought a Médium rare one, which was much better. I almost forgot about the Horrible house salads she served us. She returned them & brought us the Cole slaw & Augratin potatoes. The mistakes were corrected, but totally changed our view of the Dark Horse. I hope improvements will be made!
