Great food. Stopped in a client. Had the burger. A little too much tartar sauce but otherwise good. Fries were very good as well.

G & R Tavern - Infamous Fried Bologna Sandwich

G & R Tavern

I've been coming here for 40 years... it was good then, it's nostalgic bliss now. I know it sounds…read morecliche, but they have the best fried bologna sandwich. Not everyone's thing but it's definitely MY thing. Staff is friendly and moves quickly if you can find a seat. This place fills up. Truely an American treasure.

Holy Bologna! A Waldo Wonder at G & R Tavern"…read more Let me tell you about the day I took a bite out of fame -- fried bologna fame, that is. Nestled in the tiny town of Waldo, Ohio (yes, it is real, and no, we did not lose him), sits a local legend: G & R Tavern. If you have never heard of it, allow me to enlighten you -- and if you have, then you already know what kind of glorious, greasy magic I am talking about. Now, I came for one reason: the iconic fried bologna sandwich. This is not your sad, thin, floppy lunchroom bologna -- no sir. This is a thick-cut slab of love, griddled to golden perfection, with just enough char to let you know it means business. Slapped onto a soft bun with cheese and pickles, it is a blue-collar burger's funky cousin -- and I was here for it. On the side? Beer-battered onion rings that crunched like a symphony and made me seriously consider writing them a love letter. They were crispy, golden, and dangerously addictive -- I could have eaten a basket the size of Waldo. My wife, being a bologna skeptic (bless her heart), played it safe with a burger and fries. And I gotta say, for a place known for its bologna, the burger held its own. Juicy, well-seasoned, and stacked just right. The fries were hot, crispy, and ready to be stolen off her plate -- which, yes, I did. Now, let us talk about the decor -- because walking into G & R is like stepping into your great-aunt's basement rec room circa 1973. Think of wood paneling, lace curtains, neon beer signs, and maybe a deer head or two wondering how it all came to this. It is cozy, kitschy, and charming in that "we're not trying to impress you, we're just being ourselves" kind of way. And honestly? I loved it. But fair warning to the modern folks: this place is proudly, unapologetically cash only. No credit cards, no Apple Pay, no crypto, no tapping your phone and hoping for the best. It is old-school -- like Bologna. So come prepared with those greenbacks, or you might be washing dishes in the back next to someone's Uncle Larry. In a world of Instagrammable cafes and overpriced avocado toast, G & R Tavern is a refreshingly humble, meat-loving time machine. Come hungry, bring cash, and leave with a belly full of bologna and a heart full of small-town Ohio charm. Until next time... I am Brian, remember to Take the Trip -- your Next Adventure is waiting.

Stellar breakfast on a random Friday am. When they say…read moreWAIT! At the hostess stand they mean it- they will be out to grab you as soon as they clean up other tables- most likely for you. It's open, there is a bar to your right as you enter and lots of seating to your right and front. Can eat at bar. We sat, mimosas and bloodies available. Or for that matter- whatever you can think of. They have scotch eggs swimming in a bowl of gravy... yes gravy... and it was delicious. Definitely a Mexican "flair" with lots of black beans, sauces, etc. I stuck with a Belt sandwich - nice and crispy bread with bacon, egg, lettuce, tomato. Friendly service and lots of value! Glad we found this spot since we are headed to Ohio a few times a year.

We did not have a good experience this time. Our bartender Shanna was less than enthusiastic about serving us. She had an attitude & was yawning Alot! We ordered margaritas, which were good as always. Then we ordered our dinner. i ordered the perch dinner W fries & coleslaw. The perch was good, the fries were way overdone & coleslaw bland. My friend ordered prime rib medium rare. The rib was served Medium to Medium well. Shanna took it away & brought a Médium rare one, which was much better. I almost forgot about the Horrible house salads she served us. She returned them & brought us the Cole slaw & Augratin potatoes. The mistakes were corrected, but totally changed our view of the Dark Horse. I hope improvements will be made!
