We were given a tour of the stables along with the history of the stables. From there we were introduced to the horses we were going to ride. We were invited into the horse stalls as the horses were groomed so the horses could get familiar with us. Once the horses were ready and saddled, we went outside where we were properly shown how to mount and dismount the horse. Off to the trail. The ride was a very relaxing hour horse ride through some trails, guided by Kristy, one of the owners. She gave us a history of the area as we rode, talked out the horses and all the while made sure everyone was good. The horses were very familiar with the area and very comfortable around people. All in all it was a very fun, relaxing hour. Upon returning, we were helped in dismounting. Once off, we had a brief chat with our tour guide, Kristy. She invited us to use the pool or saltwater hot tub they have on site. Perhaps on our next trip. My wife and I would absolutely recommend this experience to anyone looking to go horseback riding. We were extremely comfortable and the horses were exceptionally well looked after. All in all, a great trip.

One lives outside Sydney, NS, and the other lives in Moncton, NB. This year Elaine had the great idea of spending the weekend at the Broadleaf Guest Ranch, which is about 30 minutes south of Moncton. I flew to Halifax on Thursday my sister and and I drove to Moncton on Friday and I flew home yesterday. Broadleaf Guest Ranch is an 1100 acre, family owned and operated adventure business located in Albert County, New Brunswick, in the heart of the Bay of Fundy! We have been providing memorable experiences for over 50 years and 3 generations. The tranquil atmosphere enables our clients to submerse themselves in Broadleaf's soothing surroundings. Combine our country setting with our delicious home-cooked Ranch cuisine and toss in some great outdoor adventures, spa treatments, and country-style lodging, to give you an award winning recipe for an exceptional, stress free, all-inclusive holiday package. There are three cabins in a row on the hill ... we were in cabin #2 (Comanche). It was a self-contained cabin with a living room, kitchen, two bedrooms (with a double bed and single bunkbeds in each room) and a bathroom. Our our view was looking out at the marsh ... horses could be seen roaming around it. I woke up in the mornings hearing cows and roosters ... quite a difference from the sirens and streetcars I hear in Toronto. We had the ladies' pampering package ... five meals (supper on Friday, breakfast/lunch/supper on Saturday and brunch today) and spa services. We had supper at the restaurant on Friday evening ... it was a busy spot! Since our spa services started earlier, we had our breakfast delivered to our cabin Saturday morning. Three of us had a cold breakfast and my sister had the hot breakfast. Tina and Tiffany, the estheticians, arrived for our spa services just before 9am (they were with us for three hours). We each had a 20 minute back massage, a manicure and a pedicure. We were too relaxed to go for lunch so had it delivered ... I had a turkey sandwich, salad and hot apple crumble. Yum! We went horseback riding Saturday afternoon, which is right across the street the cabins ... $30 for an hour. We were too comfortable to go for supper Saturday night so had it delivered. I had the roast turkey dinner again as did my sister. My friends had nachos. Brunch yesterday was a buffet. There was lots to choose from ... tea biscuits, bacon, ham, sausages, quiche, scrambled eggs, home fries, mashed potatoes, stuffing, fiddleheads, potato salad, chow, mustard pickles, desserts and lots lots more! It was part of our package ... it's only $14 if you aren't in the package. It was a a popular spot! What a great place! I would definitely recommend it for a weekend getaway. It was only $275/person. We are talking about going back again next year! The only strange thing I found about the cabin is that there was no phone. Granted the office can be seen from the cottages but what if there was an emergency and you didn't have a cell phone? Or you wanted your meals delivered but didn't have a cell phone? A huge shout-out to Kathy Weir! She took such good care of us! She would pop up to the cabin to make sure we had everything we needed, delivered our meals, etc. She even washed our dishes which felt strange since we were sitting right there but she kept stressing that we were there to be pampered.

When I was working on South Park Street, I would walk past this landmark in the morning. The horses would be in the pen "horsing" about, often playing with orange pylons or just jumping around and chasing one another. In the evenings, on my home, I would see students learning the ropes, as an instructor stood center with a megaphone, yelling commands as the horses trotted about. Last summer on Canada day, there was a huge competition and all of Bell Road was closed down. Horses took precedent, walking about the street freely as their owners and riders braided their manes and brushed their flanks. It was a lovely sunny day sight; horses munching on the grass at the Natural History Museum while others competed in the ring. My only concern are the fumes from the traffic so close to the stable. I wonder if the horses are affected by the exhaust and whether the loud rumbling morning and evening commuters scare them at all. If you're able to stop and watch the horses some day while heading past I'm sure you'll be mesmerized and amused. Their such amazing creatures and many of them seem to be quite playful. The Bengal Lancers is a neat spectacle right in the midst of this bustling little city.

Every morning I get a real kick out of watching the horses trot around, play with one another and chew the fence (I find this especially amusing). The horses look very powerful and beautiful. It's really great to see them in the middle of the city. I guess this is one of those weird locations that gives Halifax its unique flare. The Junior Bengal Lancers offer lessons and do a lot of great work within the community that we should all be very proud of. Next time you're walking down Bell Road stop and watch the horses go about their business. It's surprisingly enjoyable...just don't be late for work!
