    Eagle entry to Wild Eagle.
    Arlene M.

Wild Eagle is another winner of a coaster. This ride is a suspended roller coaster with 4 seats across. The top is an eagle spreading out her wings. Two people sit beneath one wing and two beneath the other one. The ride "takes off" and you are flying like a bird through loops, inversions, corkscrews, twists. It had me screaming at every turn. During your ascent you get a bird's eye view of the park. This ride is pretty popular in the park. Suggest using your timesaver pass to get on it with little wait. It is definitely my 2nd favorite metal coaster in the park with Big Bear Mountain being my first. There is a lovely entry statue with a bald eagle for picture taking. Nearby is Eagle sanctuary and the bird show where you can see and have you picture taken with an actual eagle. Note internet reception in this section of the park is very bad for some reason. Enjoy the ride!

Get a birds eye view of the park as you soar through the sky on the wings of an eagle on Dollywood's premier coaster, Wild Eagle. This is America's first steel wing coaster, built by Bolliger & Mabillard. It opened to the public on March 24, 2012 and it was the first ride of its kind in the U.S. Wild Eagle rises 210 feet, taking you 21 stories above Dollywood. It reaches speeds of 61 miles per hour and leaves you feeling as if you are actually soaring high above the Smoky Mountains. Instead of the traditional train on the track rollercoaster, Wild Eagle seats riders on either side so there is nothing but air above and below you. The ride is very smooth as you are hurled into a 210 foot drop, a 110 foot vertical loop and a zero gravity roll for an exhilarating two minutes and twenty-two seconds. This was my favorite ride in Dollywood. We were so fortunate that on the day we visited, there was no line and we could just walk on the ride as many times as we wanted. We rode in the middle, the first seat (my favorite) and the last row. We kept getting off and going back on until I got dizzy. The coaster is so much fun. When you get done you can visit the real eagles that Dolly has rescued in the parks eagle sanctuary. This is a thrill ride you don't want to miss.

Entry signage for this graceful "wing" coaster, the 1st of its kind built in the USA! #soarin

WINGS OVER DOLLY The very 1st coaster of its kind built in the United States delivers a brilliantly graceful ride. I'd experienced a couple "wing" coasters prior to my Dollywood visit and was excited to see what custom creation the geniuses over at Bolliger & Mabillard had whipped up for the Tennessee theme park. (( for those unfamiliar with coaster jargon, Wild Eagle basically has you sitting on either -_side_- of the rails themselves, as opposed to sitting directly on top or underneath them. with no track above your head or below your feet, the ride experience is much more freeing, not to mention less jarring. it's a total trip!! )) As our 2nd major ride of the day, we hopped on shortly after the park opened its queue to guests. With less than a 10 minute wait, I insisted that we take the back row for a spin. The SUPER comfy self-tightening vest restraints locked down, and we began the climb up the 210ft chain lift. I was surprised that for such a towering lift hill, the first drop was only 135ft. Still, the trains get up to a modest 61mph prior to entering a large vertical loop. From there, a gentle zero-G roll gave some nice hangtime that was immediately followed by an immelman maneuver (don't ask). The 4th and final inversion was a corkscrew leading to a brief helix, a small airtime hump, and finally the brake run. Once cycle lasts approximately 2 minutes and 22 seconds, though you spend more than half of that time climbing the (considerably) steep 45° lift hill. ::notable ride elements:: *110ft vertical loop *zero-G roll *immelman *corkscrew Wild Eagle really cranks through guests at a whopping 1,000 riders per hour! This means even on days when crowds are heavy, you shouldn't have to wait terribly long to enjoy this amazing roller coaster. The seats are very ergonomic and can even accommodate larger folks. There's a gigantic steel sculpture of a bald eagle in front of the ride that weighs 8,000 pounds and has a 42ft wingspan! It's quite impressive and makes for excellent pictures ......unfortunately, the rest of the coaster is fairly hidden in the trees and makes for difficult photo ops. _____________ FINAL VERDICT: Perhaps I've been spoiled by "X-Flight" at my hometown park (Six Flags Great America) and "GateKeeper" @ the one-and-only Cedar Point. Those coasters yielded a more intense experience than this installation, but Wild Eagle was built before either of 'em. With excellent rider throughput and a series of majestic inversions, Wild Eagle is a very fluid roller coaster that I'd absolutely recommend on your visit to Dollywood. Expert protip: snag rides on the front-left & back-right of the train for awesomely different experiences! Eric S's Dollywood coaster rating = 4th out of 7.

We parked across the street in their free parking area, which had plenty of available spots at that hour. The walk over was less than a mile and very manageable. Although the weather wasn't ideal--light rain and chilly temperatures--it didn't take away from the experience. We started by walking around and taking everything in. There are so many cute shops, unique stores, and plenty of great photo opportunities throughout the area. We did a little shopping, sampled some food, and purchased tickets to ride the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel, which was a highlight. Before heading out, we made one last stop at Ole Smoky Moonshine, which is always a fun experience. Even though the weather didn't fully cooperate, we still had a great time and really enjoyed our visit. The Island has a fun, lively atmosphere and offers something for everyone--we'd definitely go back!

With that being said, we found it a bit of a tourist trap and pricey, but that was to be expected for the area and kind of place this is. There are tons of alcohol tasting places and food places through out here. We did do a stop and tasting at Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine, which was unique enough since I am from the west coast visiting, and fun. I still think if you want more authentic tastings and food, to go to downtown Gatlinburg instead (it's all similar enough though). We also did a wine tasting here and all the wines were so sweet for my palette. I did enjoy the shops and pursuing around this beautiful area. A great spot to get some steps in. Many places also offer free samples of food to (like the candy store) so don't be afraid to go in and try.
