My husband treated me to the best Valentine's Day meal i could have asked for at Whuttle's BBQ in the Lancaster Drive Walmart Supercenter in Salem. I'm Southern and I've eaten a lot...a LOT... of BBQ, from home cooked at my family meals and events, at roadside stands, food trucks, mom-and-pop joints, and nice sit-down restaurants. As part of my work as a corporate trainer, driving all over the South and Midwest was my daily commute, but BBQ was my daily off-work mission. I've eaten a LOT of BBQ! Whuttle's BBQ is not Southern quality, it is HIGH Southern quality. I wasn't very hungry when we went out tonight so I just ordered the BBQ chicken sandwich. My husband ordered the same plus the mac-n-cheese and we both had Whuttle's own fruit punch. I took a bite of the husband's mac-n-cheese to sample it...before he threatened me with the loss of a hand if I ate any more...and it was, to make it simple, the best mac-n-cheese I've ever had, and I've eaten a good bit of that around the country, also. The chicken was moist and tender with a perfect smoky aroma and flavor. Their BBQ sauce was just right and the sandwich had just the right amount - a flavor boost for the perfect chicken but not overpowering nor was the sandwich swimming in it. Just right. The bun was fresh and soft and was ideal. That fruit punch was so good I could have drank a gallon. It made the sandwich a perfect match. I realize I keep using the word 'perfect' in this review. That's not an accident. On top of the wonderful food and drink and speedy service was the Down Home friendliness of the folks there. We learned that the inspiration comes from their Arkansas roots and among great Southern BBQ, the BBQ I've had in Arkansas stood out from the rest, and honestly Whuttle's would make even great Arkansas BBQ seem average by comparison. It was Valentine's Day and my husband and I had been craving BBQ from a while. Our luck with BBQ has been sub par at best. The last thing we needed to hear was that Whuttle's like their competitors were out of BBQ. Luckily for us Whuttle's far exceeded our expectations. Words can't even begin to describe how wonderful Whuttle's is. The dining area isn't overly decorated except for these two murals that are beautiful and adds charm to the restaurant. Upon arrival the staff was very friendly. We were asked if this had been our first time. Since it was the wonderful woman took the time to explain the menu. Honestly everything sounded delicious. My husband and I both had the BBQ chicken sandwich, Whuttle's fruit punch and a side of their Mac and Cheese. In no time we received our fruit punch which was brought to us with a warm smile, and then the food a few minutes later. Starting with the sandwich and after the first bite I was astonished. The sauce was flavorful and perfectly coated the chicken which was juicy and tender, but not overly so that the bun was soggy. Before I knew it my sandwich was gone. The Mac and cheese was also perfect in taste. It definitely wasn't your standard box Mac and cheese. It was seasoned and had no artificial flavor taste that box Mac and cheese has so I'm grateful that boxed man and cheese is not in their kitchen. My husband suspects it's seasoned with thyme which definitely gives it such a delicious flavor. All this amazing food was washed down with their Whuttle's fruit punch which I have no words to describe how delicious it is, and best of all the had a little bit of ice so you get more drink than ice. Best of all when we finished our meal a nice woman whom I can assume is the owner asked us how the food was. My husband is from Georgia so he and the owner had a lovely conversation. We both mentioned the food was immaculate. Considering my husband was raised In the south he has high expectations for BBQ. Overall Whuttle's BBQ is the quintessential BBQ restaurant. I truly hate writing bad reviews, but the Yelp rating on this place seems like it's from another planet. I was really looking forward to some good BBQ and I really wanted to like this place, but it didn't taste fresh at all. Pulled pork was large chunks with no flavor and nothing like good BBQ I've had before. Brisket was solid cubes of firm meat with little flavor. Reheated? The Mac and cheese was ok, but couldn't rescue the rest of the meal. The lemon cake seems to have a cream cheese frosting that somehow melted off to the side yet somehow curdled and looks unappetizing. Is it just old? Not sure. Unfortunately, the meal was not at all a good value for $25. I'd look elsewhere. read more

I was craving some bbq. I've been wanting to try whuttles for a long time. Located inside the Walmart. South entrance. Walk up counter. Order your food and pick up at counter. I went with the brisket sandwich 12$ and I added two sides one was potato salad and the other was bbq baked beans. 4$ each. I always like testing out the sides of any new bbq place I go to. Along with sauces if they have them. So let's get right to it. For 12$ just for the sandwich I think that's a little steep. At least for what you get. The brisket seemed old and dry. Like they reheated it. Wasn't tender pull apart juicy like I like it. Also pretty thinly cut rather than the pencil thickness I prefer. Didn't come with a lot of sauce either. So I had to ask for some just to safe the sandwich. Also it came out fairly cold along with the beans. The two sides were pretty good I suppose. But they should offer a side with a sandwich for the quality or quantity you get. The sides were not big either for 4$ a piece. So for 20 $ for my meal along with my 4 $ fruit punch. Which was ok. I'm gonna say I was not happy with it. I really wanted to give this place good reviews. But for my taste it did not pass. I'll definitely try it one more time atleast. I also ordered some rib tips to go for my mom as she loves rib tips. I had just tried one. The piece I had was Smokey and saucy but dry unfortunately. Not tender. I have been hearing about this BBQ spot inside Walmart (not a good sign) for a couple of years now. Have wanted to try them. Who doesn't want "Smoked Spaghetti?" Seems everytime I am in the area they are closed. The last couple of times they were open but I did not try. There is a big lack of BBQ Smell. ZERO! I was just really excited to have found a BBQ place kind of nearby, and I wrongly assumed it would be good :( I have been here twice now and I wish to apologize if I convinced anyone else to spend their money here. The product is highly overpriced, I am convinced that they do not give you the weight that you are paying for, they are extremely selfish with the sauce, the meat is not very flavorful and the meat they do give you is COVERED in fat. Also, no extras are ever included, no green onions, no bread, just a tiny half-full ramekin of sauce that is good for about 3 bites. I will not come back here. It's just not worth the expense, nor the stress of going inside this ghetto Walmart. read more

The Owner and the Staff are very helpful and friendly. There is plenty of indoor seating. Everything we have tried so far has been excellent. The brisket is flavorful. The smoked salmon is juicy and wonderful. Their macaroni and cheese is excellent, homemade like my mom used to make back in the days before it started coming in a box. I have been here several times and tried most items on the menu. The food is delicious! My favorites are the brisket, pulled pork, chicken, ribs and smoked spaghetti. I like the meat plates with the Mac and cheese under the meat. They also have gumbo and various weekly specials. Everything is cooked fresh and seasoned perfectly! Respect to Whuttles for trying to make a go on the east side of Salem. We needed it. I purchased a 2 meat meal for $22. It included ribs and chicken with beans and mac on the side. I'm not BBQ expert, but everything was tasty. Lean (low fat) meats, zippy sauce. The sides were decent too. My only gripe would be the box felt a little light for the price. I was hoping to split the meal comfortably between two people, but had to stretch it over rice. I can't knock that too much, though, as expensive as things are right now. I work at the Lancaster Dr Walmart, and eat at Whuttle's as often as I can, their food has never disappointed me, it's always absolutely amazing, one of my personal favorites is the brisket macaroni bowl, however while the delicious food certainly is plenty to sell this place, the service is equally as amazing, Whuttle's is family owned and operated and the folks that own it are some of the most amazing folks I've ever met, they make every trip to Whuttle's personal and truly worth every visit, in my opinion they're the best place in town and it truly is a pleasure to be able to work so close giving me so many opertunities to enjoy their food.
