Headed back for some more delicious whole bean coffee and to my surprise there have been even more great changes at Whiting Coffee. They now have a coffee bar with a wide selection of drinks. They have also been rearranging the store and adding additional products. They have a large selection of loose tea, balsamic vinegars and oils from local retailer, Figments, and numerous cookies and sweets. They also have a few body care products and carry seasonal products, including those special holiday treats from Europe. The staff are super nice and friendly, knowledgeable and able to make suggestions, and generally just nice folks with whom to have a chat. Not recommended for people who really enjoy coffee without anything in it. We bought this coffee for over 20 years and are so disappointed they are only doing light roast now. This coffee roaster used to have the best dark roasted coffee 'full city roast'. Whiting's has been an occasional stop for me for years. If I lived closer I would drop by more often. I know when I get beans here I will not be disappointed. My favorite id the Ethiopian and while I'm no coffee expert I find it delicious. They offer a smattering of other products. Coffee supplies, chocolate, jams and jellies as well as some coffee cups. I'm not a big tea guy but they offer a variety of teas to choose from. The staff is a bit distant and almost seemed surprised to see a customer. I've been getting my coffee at Whiting's for almost 30 years. Norm Whiting and his family have perfected the art of aging and roasting coffee beans when they are just right. Roasted beans start to lose their flavor as soon as they cool, which is why they only roast enough for a day or two. That means when you get your coffee at Whiting's--beans or ground--you're getting them at their very best. No better coffee in Albuquerque. And if you want truly exquisite coffee, buy beans and a grinder and grind your own every morning. I'm not much of a tea drinker but the tea I've bought there in the past has been awesome as well. Grinders, kettles and cups; cookies, crackers and biscuity type snacks with jams and spreads to put upon them; a great quality over quantity assortment of goods. Of course, the real goods are their impressive assortment of coffees - all listed up on a huge chalkboard up behind the counter. Domestic and international, single source and blends - I imagine they've got you covered whatever your bean preference and the staff there is friendly and will help you make your decision. A former co-worker of mine in Boston told me that her entire family, spread out across the country, gets their coffee mailed to them from Whitings and I don't think you can get a better endorsement than that. If you're looking for something other than your local Flying Star (etc.) coffee to bring home, look no further - you'll likely find no better. read more

Whiting coffee is the best in town for fresh roasted coffee beans hands down!! A coworker friend of mine who is a hardcore coffee drinker like me turned me on to this place a few years ago. I have been a loyal customer ever since. Norm is an expert roaster and he offers top notch single origin coffees from around the world at a fair price. He roasts here daily. They only take cash to keep prices down. $20 gets you two (2) full lbs 16oz of coffee with change back. These other places in town that only give you 12oz coffee beans for $15 are way overpriced and not near as fresh as Whitings offerings. He is a world whole seller. No barista onsite. I also like some of the unique hard to find condiments and chocolate from around he world that Whiting offers in store. They also offer whole leaf teas from around the word equally as fresh for a fair price. Don't waste your time going anywhere else for your coffee supply. I moved to Albuquerque in ​1995, from the Bay Area. I couldn't find any good coffee at that time. Albuquerque seemed to be a coffee wasteland -- except for Whiting. Not long after I started going there, I had a conversation with the owner. I recall he told me that he used to roast for Peets, which was at that time, a remarkable coffee company. Whitting's coffee has been consistently excellent through the years. He will even sell you raw beans if you want to roast them yourself. He sold me 40 pounds once, at a great price.The shop is cool, too. read more

I have been buying fresh roasted coffee from Whiting for many years. Some of the best coffee in town and cheapest prices. They just recently changed ownership as the longtime roaster and founder Norm Whiting retired as of April 2021. However, his son Jon is still master roasting and has been the primary roaster for many years. As long as Jon remains the primary roaster it will remain top shelf quality. If this changes or if the new owners decide to cut things this could change my rating here. I also hope some of the unique European condiments/chocolates remain as this was one of the things that made Whiting unique. Although the prices have increased a little it still remains a great value. Best and freshest coffee beans in town in my opinion and has been for many years. I like their variety and the freshness. I like both Sumatra and French Roast so I usually ask which was most recently roasted, and in most cases both have been roasted within 24 hours. I usually buy just 1/2 pound (whole beans) which I drink within a week, which seems to be the normal length of time for beans to taste fresh. As Bir D. mentions, they sell a large variety of dark chocolate and I always buy the 90% Cocoa variety which supposedly is good for you...... Yes the staff is slightly impersonal but over time I have really come to like them. I again like Bir D's comment: "you feel like part of a secret bittersweet family". I tried the fresh roasted beans. We ground them ourselves at home with our burr grinder and brewed the coffee at 200 degree water and at 1.25 minute bloom time. It was the Costa Rican. We found the roast over powering. I do enjoy a strong roasted coffee but I did not find this to be to my liking especially with all the five star reviews I wanted to be blown away. I am willing to give them another chance and will at some point go in and try something else. As a coffee snob I am very picky and found there roast to be a disappointment as it tasted burned. read more
