What a beautiful mountain! As an adult first learning to ski, I found Whiteface fairly intimidating. Just the drive in with its sweeping views of the east slope landscape is awe-inspiring. As an Olympic mountain with the greatest continuous vertical drop in the eastern US, this ski mountain has so much to offer for all levels of outdoor enthusiast. The Bear's Den area is the perfect launching point for little ones, new skiers, or those who prefer to warm up with an easy slope. If you're ready to jump in, there's a series of greens, blues, blacks, and more that can be accessed from their main lodge area by a gondola and several chairlifts to the mid and upper mountain. Even on busy days there's so many miles of trails that it keeps the crowds spread out to a degree. Can the lift lines get excessive? Sure. But if you're not picky, you can ski around (or stick to the upper mountain) and you can get a decent amount of runs in. Great mountain to level up on. In the past year I've graduated to some of their blues and finally made it to their highest lift (at 4,386 feet!) to soak in the amazing views of the surrounding Adirondacks. I've hiked many a mountain in summer this height but it was rewarding to catch a ride to the top and make my way down on skis. I appreciated the trail matrix available this year to gain a better understanding of which blues are easier and which start to verge on black so that I don't find myself in an overly uncomfortable situation before I'm mentally ready to do so. While all skiing is generally expensive, I feel you get a pretty good bang for your buck. Great facilities with a mid-mountain lodge. Fun events to watch if you catch them on a day you're already on-mountain. I caught both giant slalom and slalom this last trip. I'm clearly no expert but, I'm a fan of this location and am grateful to have the opportunity to ski here a couple times a year when in the area. I have been trying to ski Whiteface for a while, usually one thing or another prevented me. Luckily this time I got a full day of skiing. Getting to Whiteface from my hotel in Lake George was easy; parking ended up being easy since I choose to park at the Bear Den Lodge area so I ended up almost to the lodge. I picked up my lift ticket RFID ticket from the electronic dispenser with no problem; by buying online in advance I got a discount price. The lodge was nice and even had racks available for free bag storage. I do appreciate that getting to the lodge and from the lodge to the lifts without having to climb steps. Overall the logistics were great for getting onto the mountain at the Bear Den area. The biggest downside I encountered was that the lifts were delayed almost 1 hour so that the groomers could redo the mountain since there was an ice storm overnight. I do have to call out the lift operator who kept us informed and entertained during the wait; it was much appreciated. Once the lifts were running there is one lift that gets you from the Bear Den area which is the beginner's area to mid-mountain and access to the rest of the mountain. Once I got skiing, Whiteface lived up to its Iceface nickname both early in the morning and then later in the afternoon. I was glad that they had regroomed the slopes so the skiing was good for most of the day. 3mmit and Lookout Mountain. I got to ski all 3 areas and really enjoyed myself. Little Whiteface was a bit limited since they had closed a whole face and one lift for race training. The Summit of course puts you up high and provides the choice to ski quite a few different trails and you can go to mid-mountain or the full 3000+ vertical to the base area. Lookout Mountain was opened later than the other areas and then was closed again for a while for regrooming; I was a bit disappointed by this since I found the Willmington Trail to be some of the best skiing on the mountain. A great long intermediate trail with fun twists and turns and variations in the slope, I would have taken a couple more runs on this trail if I had the chance. I really enjoyed skiing Whiteface, it is the largest vertical for any Eastern ski area. The lift system works well and navigating the mountain is not too hard. Having hosted the winter Olympics there is plenty of challenge and variety. Prices are reasonable, especially if you buy your tickets online and in advance. Because Lake Placid is a bit remote the lift lines were short. As long as the weather cooperates Whiteface is a great place to ski or ride. read more

We rode the ski gondola up to the top of the mountain top look at the fall colors. It's definitely a fun, very low key activity. They were very efficient at the lodge, abs there was cider and hot chocolate to purchase. The ride was maybe 10-15 minutes, and you can walk around up top. read more

Not very crowded and well run overall but obvious issue is lack of a green run from the top and generally their runs are on the harder side of their designation. One simple improvement would be to better support beginners with the step up from the Falcon Flyer runs. The only other accessible green run from the beginner area, Boreen, is a hard step up already because it is on the steeper side of a green. Then you add too many people deciding they have had enough of harder skiing uphill and want to finish up their run back to the gondola by bombing it past beginner skiers on a green and you have a problem. There are plenty of alternative routes for those skiers to get back to base, it is just a matter of better emphasizing speed limits on Boreen to encourage the advanced skiers to take the alternative routes. read more

I am vacationing in the area with my local friends because I grew up in Ballston Spa. We always wanted to make the trip so we did yesterday. It was nice. We got up to Whiteface. We paid to take the little bus up to the castle and that small fee took care of everything getting up to the .. our bus driver Dave was phenomenal. Five star He needs a raise. He was extremely informative and very funny! We took the tunnel and got on the elevator and that was great. Went up to the summit, but unfortunately it was totally clouded. So we couldn't see anything but then we went into the café and we had lunch and it was very casual, but it was good. I wanted to buy a pretzel for the bus driver, but I didn't want to carry it around. They didn't have a bag to offer me which is fine so she said go to the gift shop. I did she didn't have a bag to offer me so I ended up ditching the pretzel because we had to wait like another hour and a half to get the bus. The gift shop was a joke down on the ground level and up in the castle.. So we wandered outside & the clouds were lifting and we got some phenomenal shots. I would do it again for sure but be prepared with these few little things I told you..the café it was delicious, Thai chicken lettuce wraps, yummy but it's limited so if you really want a phenomenal lunch, plan on going to one of the cute little restaurants I saw on the way in. all in all, it was a good day! I've been here a few times starting in the late 90s. The mountain is more on the challenging side. The top of the mt doesn't really have novice trails. So this may not necessarily be the greatest mountain to learn. Recently we have only come here in March during midweek. And during midweek it's great. No lines on the gondola. Easy in and out. Conditions this year for all east coast mountains have been challenging. Before we were to arrive, it said icy to loose granular. But lucky for us, it snowed overnight and we had packed powder conditions! Prices March midweek can't be beat. Overall we had a great time and will be back next year. Cloudspin Bar and Grill is also a great spot to get a drink and lunch. I actually think it makes more $ sense to eat at this sit down restaurant than at the cafeteria. Overall it's a nice spot to spend the day. read more

Tale of two visits - on the first day we took the Gondola ride up to "Mini Whiteface". The ride was enjoyable even with all the clouds and fog that was floating around as it rained earlier in the day. The gondola car does get warm, so I would recommend opening the window vents (if not already opened) to keep yourself comfortable. At the top of "Mini Whiteface", we were able to enjoy views of the mountains as the clouds passed us by. On the second day, we drove up the Memorial Highway to attempt going to the very top of Whiteface. The car ride will take some time, about 15-20 minutes as you wind your way up the road. The views are great as you travel up the mountain. Once we reached the end of the road, we took the elevator to the observation deck. We enjoyed spectacular views of the surrounding Adirondacks. We need up walking down the path and with my vertigo I spent more time looking down to keep myself steady. I did stop and look up a few times and the views were great. Definitely recommend trying to visit both spots. Word of warning the Gondola was $25/per person. The car ride up the mountain is a few for your car and then a per additional passenger charge. read more

We came to ski towards the end of the season and were not disappointed. This was my first time here and I enjoyed being able to come to an actual mountain and stay in NYS due to current travel restrictions. Due to covid we needed to pre buy our tickets to ensure our entrance due to capacity restrictions. If you wanted to ski on a weekend you needed to buy a multi day ticket. Once you arrived you needed a print out or screenshot of your QR code and a machine would dispense your lift pass. All lifts were gated which made it easy and fast to get through the lines and onto the lift. Attendants were all wearing masks and enforced all riders to do the same. I appreciated that the employees in charge of this were larger men who watched to make sure all riders followed directions before walking away. The conditions were amazing the days we were there. It was slightly warmer the days we were there so it wasn't freezing or icy. The trails were well groomed and there were a large variety of trail difficulties for all all riders. The gondola and most of the lifts were running without issues. It wasn't very busy but as with all resorts this year you needed to ride with people in your group. So the lines moved a little more slowly than usual. The gondola ride was gorgeous by itself. The views were fantastic and it was beautiful scenery. The top of the mountain had fantastic views and great areas to take pictures. There were many lodges to stop and eat or use the facilities. Overall everything was clean but the service was slow. My DH and I had planned on attending the inauguration, but alas with Covid and other BS going on, we decided to do something that didn't involve quarantining or flak jackets. Covid precautions: like all ski places now..lockers aren't useable right now, get ready in your car. Warm up at the lodge requested for ppl to warm up at a table for 20 minutes, restrooms clean and supplies full. Mask up everywhere. Stayed Tuesday night through Thursday morning. We stayed at the Quality Inn..cheap on the edge of town and alittle older..but staff was friendly, clean rooms and a jacuzzi for after skiing. Whiteface was NOT busy. Fresh snow and skiing on nicely groomed trails were a treat. A year into skiing and my DH and I had never skied on real snow. It was a beautiful ride from the hotel to the mountain with the pines heavy with fresh fluffy snow. My DH is an intermediate and I'm a beginner..a master of the bunny hill and purveyor of the lodges. He enjoyed the greens and I did as well. Everything was clean, working and AMAZING. He had a lesson with "Bill" the science teacher. He was able to explain technique and my husband who also had been a AP at a few colleges and Bill were able to connect and my DH got a lot out of the lesson. Shout out to Brendon/Brendan on the bunny hill as well - who is also an adult lesson provider as well. But he was so engaging and attentive with the people young and old heading up the magic carpet. But really everyone we came across was pleasant and helpful. The lodges seemed new or kept up very well. Had lunch at the Little Bear Den bar area. The C.A.B - chicken, avacado and bacon sandwich on a brioche bun was so good I had it both days. Tip: parking at the main lodge was on the road. Park at the learning center and ski across the mountain to the main lodge not busy. You can always take the shuttle back over to the parking area of the learning center. read more

We visited Whiteface Mountain in June with our granddaughter. The lodge at top of mountain is very well maintained and all staff are very friendly . However, we have to give a very special recognition to the retail manager, Sarah Braid. We contacted Sarah after our visit as my granddaughter remembered a doll she wanted in the gift shop and very much wanted it for her birthday. Sarah returned my call, sent me pictures and arranged for me to purchase the doll and have it mailed to me. That is incredible customer service. Thank you, Sarah. Ahhh, Lake Placid, site of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. A very historical place to cross off my skiing bucket list. Whiteface Mountain was the venue for the alpine skiing events and has a lot of challenging terrain. Being in the Adirondack Mountains, it's a little more of a truck at about 6 hrs from NYC, but is worth the trip. We found a large house on AirBnB in nearby Wilmington and was only a 7-10 minute drive to the mountain. The town of Lake Placid itself is actually 20-25 minutes further down the road and is a quaint ski town. The trails at Whiteface are more challenging than what you would see at lower state mountains like Windham, Belleayre and Hunter. Trail breakdowns: 20% green (beginner), 46% blue (intermediate) and 38% black (advanced). My son is a beginner with a couple of years skiing, who is still snow plowing, had some trouble with a slight steep section on Easy Way coming off the front Face Lift detachable quad chairlift. After we moved over to the real beginner bunny hill area by Bear Den Lodge, he enjoyed all the groomed green trails over there and really built up his confidence. After he was comfortable with that and some lunch, I tried out some of the blues and blacks on the upper mountain. Some of the intermediate trails would qualify for blacks in the hills of Poconos. The Wilmington trail is the longest here at 2.2 miles and in some sections is narrow and almost a half pipe overlooking a steep drop off. I'll stick to cruising the wide open blues, thank you. My knees and thighs are thankful also. I guess this wouldn't be a Yelp review without some food in it. There are sit-down pub style restaurants in the bottom lodge and typical ski lodge cafeteria style food can be had at all the lodges. When you've been hammering the snow all morning, any kind of food is welcome. My typical ski lunch meal is a hot dog and clam chowder. My son's chicken fingers looked good from where I was sitting and I was able to steal some of his french fries. I was too tired to take any food pictures though. read more

I do not recommend skiing/snowboarding here. It's always icy and my older brother unfortunately got into an accident here, and did not recover from his fatal and serious injuries. I wish I could do something to sue this mountain that took my older brothers life and has my entire family in agony. It SHOULD BE their responsibility making their conditions BETTER by doing better maintenance to make it safer for skiers/riders to have good experience on, but I'm blaming this mountain for taking my older brothers life here. read more

This place was a blast. We took the gondola to the top - 4865 feet. It was a smooth but steep ride, which was quite thrilling. At the top, we were allowed to disembark. There was a beautiful deck at the summit with sweeping views of Lake Placid and the surrounding area. A large illustration showed what we were seeing and was labeled with mountain name, etc. There were also some 25 cent binocular machines for close up viewing. The gondola cars were very easy get on and off. The staff was helpful. It was a highlight of our brief time in the Adirondacks. There other things going in, but we did not take advantage. Hiking Review As a person who has never hiked a mountain before Whiteface was an experience. I'd say at least moderate fitness is recommended for doing the trail itself. Lots of rocks to go over, especially toward the end where one almost has to scale them. From the trail start the elevation goes up about 3,000 feet and I'd say most of that is in the first 2/3rds of the hike. It definitely requires hiking boots, a backpack full of water, and possibly poles. The views from the trail itself are rather minimal until you reach the crossing for Mount Esther. The ski lift area is a great pause point to look out before heading on to the summit when the tree line finally thins. It took me about four hours to reach the summit as a person who only hikes a few times a year. The great thing about Whiteface is there is a road which goes to the top. I took the road on the way down, which was maybe 6 miles back to the trail head, and completed the walk in roughly 2.5 hours. There is no shoulder on the road so walk it at your own risk if the road is open to traffic. Drivers have to pay a toll to use it but it is recently paved with a LOT of great view points! The road is also open to cyclists who want a long, slow climb. In the parking area one has the option of taking the elevator or doing the stairs-ish/handrail. The stairs are a bit of a workout and have a handrail to help over the rocks. Admittedly the handrail area is what triggered my full on fear of heights and a near full blown panic attack, thus me not being able to say I am a fan per say and just give it an A-Ok. The elevator is a much better option if you just want to see the view from the top. Whiteface has a lovely little gift shop and cafe...though both are up a set of stairs....which is a rather horrible sight if you have just been hiking uphill for a few hours. Still, the gift shop is well stocked and mercifully temperature controlled. You can definitely Treat Yo Self in the cafe! The views are a beautiful 360 degrees all around, pleasantly enjoyed from an observation deck. read more

Oh man, what a beautiful mountain and place. I was here during the spring for some hiking before Whiteface mountain road opened up so we did a bit of hiking. Absolutely awesome trails throughout! I tried the Staghorn Falls trail just past the lodge and it was super awesome although the elevation and steepness of the trail was breathtaking (literally). The waterfalls were so beautiful though that it was worth every rest break and painful step up further on the trail. I'd love to try skiing here someday but I'm not a local so it will probably be a special trip for me. Amazing mountain, views, and area just absolutely stunning! read more

It's hard to rate this, because it offers one of the most spectacular views I've ever seen in NYS however man has stepped in and turned it into an expensive tourist attraction. It blows my mind that you are actually charged such an expensive fee to DRIVE up the mountain. It cost $15 per car and also $8 per passenger over age 12. I guess one of the reasons they charge is for the upkeep of the elevator which was out of order that day anyway. Not like I would have used the elevator, I already felt guilty enough driving up the mountain instead of hiking it. But I've been to many other "state parks" that do not charge crazy fees and are up kept way better! There is a cafe and gift shop at the top which is nice. I didn't eat at the cafe but the menu seemed to consist of typical $8 sandwiches. Would be nice to eat with such a great view. The "hike" is probably about a half mile and has a 200ft elevation change from the parking lot. Not difficult by any means but there is an elevator (usually) if you prefer! Some of the rocks are very slippery due to such heavy traffic so I recommend sneakers read more

Mountain is too expensive for what it is. But my issue is that there is a lot of theft going on there. My daughter's new skies got stolen during her lunch break. The mountain did give her rentals, and I know thefts happen, but it sucks. Then I found out my son left his mittens on his boot bag when getting lunch. The mittens were stolen. Whiteface is one of the few ski resorts that every eastern skier must visit. It boasts the biggest vertical drop east of the Rockies, and what is, in my opinion the greatest ski town in the east (sorry Stowe). Nice little restaurants, gorgeous mountain views, a beautiful glacial cut lake, quaint shopping, and even (this is critical) a microbrew pub. The caveat is that you need to hit Whiteface right, meaning of course, when they have solid snow conditions. The pejorative moniker "Iceface", is not completely without merit, the conditions here can be, well, crappy if the area has gone a while without a storm. High winds can scour the mountain, reducing it to veritable sheets of ice. But with nice snow, you are in for a treat at Whiteface, great moguls runs, PLENTY of steepness, solid trail variety, and the only "western-like" on-map, chute-style skiing in the east (aka The Slides). And if all that wasn't enough, how many ski resorts can boast that they've hosted an Olympic downhill. FYI, it you want to pretend you're in the Olympics, the exact Men's downhill course can be "replicated" by taking: Cloudspin to Niagara to Victoria to Broadway to Lower Valley. Ladies? The Women's Olympic downhill can be replicated by taking: Skyward to Easy Street then Upper Boreen to Ladies Bridge to Lower Valley. Have fun, and dont forget to wave to your adoring pretend crowd when you win the gold. ** Hiking review only! ** Whiteface's most popular hiking trail starts in Wilmington just off route 86 and runs 10.4 miles roundtrip. It took us about 5 hours. The big plus with this trail is that you can take the road down, saving you tons of time if you're mentally done by the time you get to the top. The fifth highest high peak, if you hike this you'll feel a great sense of satisfaction as you watch people driving up in their cars or preparing for a gondola ride. Invest in this hike and it will reward you greatly! Moderate most of the way and moderate-hard in other places, you have to be in good shape to take on this hike and I wouldn't recommend the full thing for kids under 13. I think the distance of it requires stamina and also an attention span that even I struggled with during the hike. There are still plenty of straightaways to catch your breath as you slowly ascend, and it's magical to feel the air turn from warm to cool as the evergreens grow taller and taller. The views are unparalleled and the rock climb at the end will have your heart racing. On a clear day it's completely astounding and spiritual. A good high peak to tackle in one day. read more

Whiteface is where I learned to ski, so it was kind of cool to return here recently for a day of pre-season skiing. Only a handful of trails were open, but it was still possible to carve up the blue trails from Little Whiteface Summit. That gondola is very comfortable and offers the perfect rest of ~10 minutes on the way up. Lines were very reasonable as it was early in the season. It's a respectable mountain for Northeast skiing, with plenty of terrain for expert skiers, and a decent amount of trails for beginners. Blue trails are not exactly in short supply, but I would not count it among the best "intermediate" mountains. The lodge, bar, and amenities were all fine. Prices are very steep, but you can get some deals if you look around (I got the online-only ticket for about half off). read more

The view at the top of the mountain is amazing!!I love snowboarding and this is an excellent mountain in comparison to the west coast mountains. Trails are long and wide. One issue is that the 1 day adult is $89. That is steep for a lift ticket. Unfortunately, this was the place of the Olympics so I guess you can expect those kind of prices. Another thing they don't advertise are half day tickets. You have to ask them or get it from Orda store. The pricing is the same at both locations so I highly recommend buying your ticket from Orda because the lines at the mountain are long. This place is skier's heaven so I think boarders are definitely the minority. Just be careful!! In addition to natural snow accumulation, this place also makes manmade snow. The trails were nicely groomed and I personally recommend trying to get as many runs in at the beginning of the day before noon because after that, the snow starts to melt and freeze over. Towards the end of the day, there were many more patches of ice. There are also tons of other things to do in and around Lake Placid. Only issue is they charge quite a bit for those activities (eg bobsled). I will definitely be coming back here again. My next stop will be to try the Vermont mountains to compare. read more

Hard to rate this one without taking the weather and conditions into consideration so let's remove them from the rating, as much as I can at least. First I have to say i went on a Saturday. Bus from parking came very quick. There was a tiny ticket line so I was helped in under 2 mins. Ticket was $79.00 all day for an adult till about 4:00. The Gondola line was less then 5 mins long, shorter then anywhere I have ever been on a Saturday. Conditions were icy, i read it has been the 4th warmest winter on record in NY so far so I don't blame them too much. Some runs were better than others. Base is mostly man made. read more

Whiteface is awesome! Great long slopes and great long runs. The snow wasn't great when we went (on Christmas weekend), but there were so many snowblowers that the snow was pretty good. The lifts are fast and the people working there are quite friendly. Equipment rental is slow though; they need more people working there. There's also a lot of places to sit to rest and eat, which is nice. Definitely recommend coming here for good snow! read more

Rentals - -Kind of expensive, but the board people were nice and friendly. The helmet and boots people were space cadets and very awkward. -The half day ski pass only starts at around noon...so not really worth it. -Returning the board and boots was a breeze..literally just gave it to them and walked away. Mountain - -The runs are really varied, you can blue square all the way from the top to the bottom, or green circle all day on the bunny slopes. If you have limited blue square experience in the east coast...just don't do it. Blue square on the east coast DOES NOT equal blue squares on the west coast....where the snow is soft and the mountains are warm, and no one says things like "vertical drop". -Definitely make it a priority to go to the very top in the gondola and take pictures! And if your mountain man is as understanding as mine, you can take the gondola back down as well in a nice warm bubble and not end your life tumbling down the mountain side. Lodge - -Pretty standard lodge, they have free hot chocolate which I hit up all day while my mountain man skiied and I people watched and updated my snap story. -The upstairs has a huge food court and a nicer restaurant. read more

I took a private lesson with Bob and it was wonderful! I was nervous to join a group lesson as I didn't want to be the oldest person in the class, so my private with Bob was perfect! He was so helpful and attentive and really noticed where I was struggling and made a point to let me know when I was doing something correctly. I only went down blue and green trails, but all the ones I boarded on were beautiful and clean. The lines for the lifts were never more than 5-10 min (and I went over a 3 day holiday weekend.) The lodge areas were beautiful as well, and while it was crowded I could always find a spot to sit down and relax for a few minutes before the next run! read more

This mtn is definitely worth taking a trip to! Plenty of challenges and a good amount of easy skiing too. It was great for our kids, 9 & 7. They enjoyed adventure club group lessons the first day. First, the mountain. This is a big mountain with very serious steeps that leaves your thighs burning, and burning bad, after a trip down. The main attribute is long steep runs with awesome big elevation and wild country views. The terrain does not have a lot of drops or interesting and fun features and the conditions are often very bad. Second, mountain operations. The state of New York and everyone else involved needs to manage the mountain better. Too many people die or suffer life-changing injuries because of icy surfaces. Operations should either improve the conditions with more grooming or pay way more attention to making the call to close runs when conditions become too hazardous. The number of deaths and injuries is unacceptable and unforgivable. (You would think Andrew Cuomo was personally running the place.) Third, the lodge. There was a renovation that turned the bar and lounge from classic adirondack styling to New-Jersey-trying-to-be-California and it is a downgrade like I have never seen anywhere else. The whole lodge now sucks. New York is applying the same incompetence it applies everywhere to this particularly magnificent (and historic) gem of a mountain and just like so many of New York's assets it is not seeing enough of the appropriate types of attention! Spent a week here with a group of 10. Our group ranged with 2 beginner to people who have skied/snowboarded for years at a variety of resorts. Everyone had an amazing time. The mountain is huge, our goal was to hit every trail they had, we didnt because some of the trails were closed but it gives us a reason to come back. If you can sign up for what i remeber as first tracks. We did that on the last day of our trip and it was worth every second of it. The conditions are awesome but the trails arnt for the faint of heart. Black diamonds are really black diamonds. During our stay an inexperianced skier died on one of them because he went into a tree(not from our group). Its sad but know your limits. If you can definatly check out the summit. Amazing view on a clear day, although i would recomend something covering your normally exposed skin. Its was so cold one day that they weren't allowing anyone on the summit lift they had any part of there face exposed. Probably because the hairs in your nose froze as you breathed in up the lift. read more

We hoped to spend a day sking on Whiteface when we were visiting. Unfortunately, our airline canceled our flight less than 24 hours before our departure and two days before our ski day. We called to cancel hoping for a refund for our gear rental and lift tickets. I mean the gear wasnt even going to come off the racks and the lift tickets not even printed, right? Why charge the customers for something they did not use? Nope, Whiteface Guest Services said suck it, and we're out $350. Thanks Whiteface Guest Services. read more
