White Pine Camp

If you are looking for quiet, calm, and a chance to unplug (but not completely) and take a deep,…read morehealing pause, White Pine Camp is the ideal place. Our family loved the history, the cabin, the incredible scenic views, the Great Room and all the amenities WPC offers. We stayed in the larger Mrs. Coolidge's cabin, the same cabin Grace Coolidge stayed in the summer of 1926 when the camp served as the Summer White House for Calvin Coolidge. We took advantage of the huge living room fireplace and had a beautiful fire everyday for our week stay. The wood is well seasoned and burns nicely. It is charmingly rustic, clean and well appointed. The sofas are comfortable and the cabin had everything we needed. What it didn't have we asked in the office and Voila! they had it on hand. We needed a blender, a different bathtub plug and tape to fix a sled and every time they accommodated our needs. Worth noting: You can sometimes hear the next door neighbors in President's Cabin but it's only from the bedroom and it was nothing that the white noise machine that the camp provided wouldn't take care of. We didn't feel the need to use the machine since it was minimal. The beds were really comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. Complimentary toiletries greeted us in the bathroom and the cabin was always warm and toasty. Our bedroom also had a fireplace and it was quite special to fall asleep with the glow of the flames filling the room each night. The upstairs bedroom has two twin beds underneath ceiling windows that give view to the stars and tall trees above (which my twins LOVED). There is also a queen bed behind a folding screen for which my mother in law said was incredibly comfortable and a double bed behind a set of curtains which my son also slept soundly on. Both the upstairs bathroom and downstairs are full baths and have large, deep claw foot tubs with no lack of hot water for a good, long soak. The views from our cabin and from the grounds are absolutely breathtaking. This is a special spot and you can hear a pin drop almost anyplace you hike, walk or sit. We also spent time at nearby Paul Smiths College making use of the gym (passes provided by WPC allowed free access to the gym, pool, library and grounds) and also at the VIC at Paul Smiths for snowshoeing and hiking (again, free with passes) My kids enjoyed bowling in the antique bowling alley and playing pool while Mom, Dad & Grandma sat by the fire in yet another huge fireplace. They sledding everyday on the grounds behind the Great Room and had a blast. Afterwards, they went inside the Great Room and made themselves a hot cocca on the Kerig machine (overseen by Grandma), provided for guests (we bought the pods by mistake thinking they were pouches from Aldi in Saranac Lake but WPC provides coffee and tea for the Kerig for guests). We sat by yet another huge fireplace in the Great Room while reading and playing chess. Yes, there is internet but often sketchy at times since we were deep in the woods, which for us, was desirable. When my husband needed to catch up on work and needed a dependable internet connection, he just popped down the road to the Paul Smiths Library which he viewed as an adjunct office. The same as President Coolidge did in 1926 as I learned from reading a book by Howard Kirschenbaum from the cute, little gift shop just off the Great Room. This place is just pure magic. I've never been to a place more quiet and Tim, the innkeeper and the entire staff go above and beyond to maintain this sense of peace and quiet throughout the camp. Cars are parked nearby but not in the main camp and you barely can hear anyone else in camp during your stay. There was 2 foot of snow on the ground for our Thanksgiving stay week and it was delightful to be there in a winter like setting. It was cold but not windy at all and totally fine with layers. The air is clean and crisp and a perfect spots for viewing the stars. We have already booked a return stay for April 2019 for the school holiday week in the same cabin and cannot wait to return. Everything was simply perfect here.

Let us preface this review by stating that we do not understand nor agree with some negative…read morecomments we have read on a couple of web sites about this magnificent place. This is a 5+ on a scale of 1 to 5 or a 10+ on a scale of 1 to 10 Campground. We are full-timers traveling in a Class-A motorhome and have stayed at a number of campgrounds, resorts, state parks, and other locations over the last few years. We have seen it all. Champlain Adult Campground is the best campground where we have had the pleasure to stay. The campground makes you feel as though you are in the middle of a garden, rather than your standard (or even "luxury") campground. We came to Champlain Lake following the recommendation of our son who was enjoying the summer in Burlington with some friends; while looking for a place where we could stay for over two weeks, we found this gem. It was easy to make a reservation over the phone, and we were fortunate that someone had cancelled, leaving the site we were assigned available for booking. JC (Jean Claude) asked for my name and to send him a $200 deposit and we were all set for our arrival on July 18th with an August 3rd departure. When we arrived, we went straight to the office. I met JC who came from elsewhere in the compound to greet us. When JC was in the process of verifying our reservation he found out that his record showed we would be arriving on August 19th (a day after our scheduled arrival in my itinerary). We were worried about the misunderstanding, but JC offered us a site next to the one we were initially assigned, emphasizing we could move the next day. JC had promised me it was the best site and he was right! Funnily, after few days of walking around the campground with our dog, we realized every site was the best site; all were well kept, private, and with great views of the lake. There are a good number of seasonal campers and--contrary to many other places we have stayed--they don't treat you like an outsider because you are not "one of them". On the contrary, the seasonal campers are friendly, respectful of everyone's privacy, and more than willing to give you tips and advice regarding the surrounding area, including interesting stops across the US-Canadian border on your way to Montreal. There are many options for campers once they are settled. You could visit Canada, drive around the little local towns and beaches, bike, swim, or kayak at the lake. Other perks include nice walks, hikes, and trips to Burlington. The campground could not be in a better location when it comes to exploring and a variety of attractions. Sunsets are something most campers--ourselves included--enjoy at the campground's beachfront. Just about everyone comes at the end of the day and enjoys the view, including JC, his wife Emma, and their children. This place is a paradise, which we told the owners several times. They maintain an immaculate space and everything is simple--as it should be. One morning, I saw few campers leaving and within minutes JC was watering their sites and soon the sites looked like no one had even camped there. JC and Emma work tirelessly, all day long, and their children help them keep the campground in shipshape condition. Seeing them work (really work) the grounds makes it obvious that there is no time left in the day to update their web site or promote this great find. Their priorities are clear: keep existing customers happy with clean, scenic, facilities that operate well. Just a couple of tips for other campers: * Bring your own internet if you need it. The same goes for satellite antennas. We had little time to plug into either since we found ourselves spending so much time outside enjoying the campground, but it is just a suggestion. * The campground has clean bathrooms with showers and coin operated laundry if you need them. Water is clean and pressure is great. We had a 50 amp site but could have been on a 30 amp. The weather, even on hot summer days, felt good given the breeze coming from the lake and the inexistent dust on the grounds. * We didn't feel the need to lock anything when we left the campsite for the day because it felt so safe, and nothing bad every came of it. The owners are friendly; they made us laugh and we had multiple stimulating conversations during our stay. I cannot recall one campsite place with better value or aesthetics (both natural and built-in) than Champlain Adult Campground. If anything, I would suggest JC and Emma to change the name, this place is just superb. Something like ¨Garden¨, ¨Peaceful¨, ¨Tranquility¨ would make justice to this place. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and cannot wait to visit again (probably for an even longer period!). We left two days ago and already miss it.

Where do I begin, the name says it all. It is child free which means it is super quiet and so…read morerelaxed. We spent about 11 days in absolute paradise at this campground. All of the sites are charming in their own right and the access to the lake is wonderful, providing a truly stunning view and wonderful place to cool off. The owners take great pride in the property that they have curated, and it is evident in every inch of the campsite. The facilities are cleaned daily, firewood is available, and the owners are a wealth of local knowledge and insight. this is by far the best campsite we have ever stayed at, the tone set by the owners really does attract a certain level of campers that are respectful and pleasant, there was no loud music, late nights or bright lights blazing through the night. This is an absolutely perfect place to decompress and enjoy the scenery. We cannot wait to come back!
