First time at Charlie's and we were surprised. The shrimp cocktail was good but the shrimp needed to be chilled. The salad was a bit on the tiny side. My chicken parm was cooked perfectly but needed more sauce which I did ask for. My husband's prime rib was grilled per his request, perfectly. It was very tender. The onion rings were one the best eaten lately. He also ordered 3 shrimp which were beer battered and wonderful! The only disappointment was our waiter-he seemed inexperienced- never offered us coffee and dessert. The place is clean and brings back a bit old time.

I've been coming here with my family for over 30 years and we have always had a great meal with great service in a truly Adirondack staple!

We got there and backed in. We liked the site at first, but decided to drive around the loop next door in search of a more suitable site. One was found that was unoccupied so we went back to the gatehouse to ask for a possible change. "Sure, no problem." He checked it and it was open. Our new site had privacy, good space, was clean and near a water spigot, the bathrooms, and was only a couple of sites from the manager, Steve, his wife Kay, and great dogs Kaya and Trump. Steve and Kay were friendly, informative, and went above and beyond to help us with any needs (like jumping my truck battery that I ran down while setting up camp with the doors open for too long.) Both dogs were very friendly and fun to visit with. Other positives included hikes along the lake, swimming at the Buck Pond beach (one young guy fishing from a kayak caught a 3.5 lb largemouth bass), and much, much more. Overall, Buck Pond Campground was a fine place to stay and enjoy the Adirondacks!

The sites are nicely spaced so that you're not bumping up against an RV rave. As with any campground, some sites are significantly nicer than others. We were in site 84, pretty damn sweet with its own little trail to the lake. Not gonna divulge what we scouted as THE best which you need to reserve 9 months in advance FYI. Schedule that with your French Laundry resies. They also had boat rentals and a map of the many waterways to explore. Highly suggest the rope swing if you come across it on Rainbow Lake. The ranger/campground manager Bob is just generally awesome. He fueled our little firelet into a great big burner. Smoky the Bear, watch out! Bob also has a ski store in Jay, NY and is a part time maple syrup maker should anyone fancy a winter excursion to the Adirondacks.

If you are looking for quiet, calm, and a chance to unplug (but not completely) and take a deep,…read morehealing pause, White Pine Camp is the ideal place. Our family loved the history, the cabin, the incredible scenic views, the Great Room and all the amenities WPC offers. We stayed in the larger Mrs. Coolidge's cabin, the same cabin Grace Coolidge stayed in the summer of 1926 when the camp served as the Summer White House for Calvin Coolidge. We took advantage of the huge living room fireplace and had a beautiful fire everyday for our week stay. The wood is well seasoned and burns nicely. It is charmingly rustic, clean and well appointed. The sofas are comfortable and the cabin had everything we needed. What it didn't have we asked in the office and Voila! they had it on hand. We needed a blender, a different bathtub plug and tape to fix a sled and every time they accommodated our needs. Worth noting: You can sometimes hear the next door neighbors in President's Cabin but it's only from the bedroom and it was nothing that the white noise machine that the camp provided wouldn't take care of. We didn't feel the need to use the machine since it was minimal. The beds were really comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. Complimentary toiletries greeted us in the bathroom and the cabin was always warm and toasty. Our bedroom also had a fireplace and it was quite special to fall asleep with the glow of the flames filling the room each night. The upstairs bedroom has two twin beds underneath ceiling windows that give view to the stars and tall trees above (which my twins LOVED). There is also a queen bed behind a folding screen for which my mother in law said was incredibly comfortable and a double bed behind a set of curtains which my son also slept soundly on. Both the upstairs bathroom and downstairs are full baths and have large, deep claw foot tubs with no lack of hot water for a good, long soak. The views from our cabin and from the grounds are absolutely breathtaking. This is a special spot and you can hear a pin drop almost anyplace you hike, walk or sit. We also spent time at nearby Paul Smiths College making use of the gym (passes provided by WPC allowed free access to the gym, pool, library and grounds) and also at the VIC at Paul Smiths for snowshoeing and hiking (again, free with passes) My kids enjoyed bowling in the antique bowling alley and playing pool while Mom, Dad & Grandma sat by the fire in yet another huge fireplace. They sledding everyday on the grounds behind the Great Room and had a blast. Afterwards, they went inside the Great Room and made themselves a hot cocca on the Kerig machine (overseen by Grandma), provided for guests (we bought the pods by mistake thinking they were pouches from Aldi in Saranac Lake but WPC provides coffee and tea for the Kerig for guests). We sat by yet another huge fireplace in the Great Room while reading and playing chess. Yes, there is internet but often sketchy at times since we were deep in the woods, which for us, was desirable. When my husband needed to catch up on work and needed a dependable internet connection, he just popped down the road to the Paul Smiths Library which he viewed as an adjunct office. The same as President Coolidge did in 1926 as I learned from reading a book by Howard Kirschenbaum from the cute, little gift shop just off the Great Room. This place is just pure magic. I've never been to a place more quiet and Tim, the innkeeper and the entire staff go above and beyond to maintain this sense of peace and quiet throughout the camp. Cars are parked nearby but not in the main camp and you barely can hear anyone else in camp during your stay. There was 2 foot of snow on the ground for our Thanksgiving stay week and it was delightful to be there in a winter like setting. It was cold but not windy at all and totally fine with layers. The air is clean and crisp and a perfect spots for viewing the stars. We have already booked a return stay for April 2019 for the school holiday week in the same cabin and cannot wait to return. Everything was simply perfect here.

If you are looking for a snazzy campground with all the bells and whistles, this isn't for you…read more But if you prefer sites with a bit of woods between them, and really friendly owners/employees it's a great bet. There are some sites that are what I call "RV park" - mostly a field with sites close to each other, but many sites with electric and water are nicely separated and wooded. The owners, Chip and Leia, have owned the place about 5 years and have had a lot of work to do to clean it up and that work continues. But they go above and beyond to make their guests welcome - I saw them dragging out a compressor to fill a guest's tire! We got stranded by a broken down tow vehicle and they found us a site for the week and even pulled the trailer off the site and stored it for us when the repairs ran longer than we thought. We will be back every year. It's the kind of private campground we love.

Bathrooms were decent ( better than NYSDEC camp grounds). Our main reason for our stay here was proximity to the high peak trailheads at ADK Loj. I would not stay here again at a field site, but maybe the wooded sites are better. Check in staff was friendly. $5 firewood, $2 bags of ice were a definite plus.
