Slugburger
Gayla R.

Great food, great value, and nice people! What more could you ask for?! We always look for local gems and this one hit the jackpot. Everything sounded so good that we ordered several things and shared. Husband's burger steak was delicious. Son had a chili dog that was delicious too. I had the white beans and a slug burger. I had to try the local flavor, of course. It was good and the beans were wonderful. Will definitely be back! My son loves history so he enjoyed visiting with the gentleman who owns the place about cannonballs and relics. Thanks for a great stop!

"Our emotional relationship to food and drink is like some tenacious desert plant, its wiry, tough roots buried deep in our psyches." My emotional relationship to slugburgers and the White Trolley go back many, many decades. For me it brings back memories of sitting at the counter as a boy with my dad, not so patiently waiting for my slugbuger to arrive. It was always accompanied by a helping of french fries and an ice cold coke-cola. This was back when they dipped the buns in the hot grease for a second... and of course, before we started paying attention to our cardiologist. Don't let the name fool you. The name slugburger comes from the slang term for a nickel. During the Depression years cooks started adding cornmeal, potato flour or other extenders in an effort to make every pound of ground beef count. Today hamburger is mixed with cornmeal grits and a special blend of spices, pressed very thin and deep friend. Traditionally, they're served topped with two slices of dill pickle, a smidgeon of onion and a dollop of mustard. Today the Trolley is showing its age; the counters are worn in places from decades of arms and elbows rubbing the formica. The floor is scuffed from the millions of feet that have shuffled across it. Seating is limited to a handful of people; I've seen it standing room only more times than I can count. Don't be surprised at peak times to find patrons lined up outside the door. Yea, it's that good. It's a local delicacy to be sure and there's no better place to get a slugburger than the White Trolley. They do serve other things, but really it all pales in comparison to the slug. Heck, we even have an entire festival devoted to the slugburger. Next time you're in Corinth, stop by, say hi and give it a try. You'll be glad you did.

If your not local or not guided to it you'll probably drive right by it! As your headed west bound on highway 72 just after you cross over the state line between Alabama and Mississippi it will come up on your right, dont pass it! Its called a cafe but its a diner and I LOVE a goood ole diner. Menu is an old fashioned coke peg board, loaded with fried foods and cased meat and burgers and priced a bit old fashioned too. Staff is super friendly, everything is made to order and delicious!

What I loved: The a la carte style menu on the board. Very old style cafe with a counter. Cute place! Needed: more tables for a group of four or more, but where would they put them? What else I loved: my eggs were cooked perfectly. I had a bite of my mother in laws toast because it looked so yummy and it was. I'll be back when I'm in the area again and maybe I'll try lunch next time.

Yummy SLUGBURGER lunch. Order the waffle fries! #eatinglocal

Fun local food we tried while driving through Corinth, Mississippi. Seasoning on the waffle fries is tasty. Address on Yelp isn't accurate. It's across the street from Jimmy John's & Dirt Cheap.

Dessert, anyone?

We came for the slugburger and enjoyed the cheap a la carte menu, sitting at the bar, the vibe, and the very nice staff

Good slugburgers and best price in town. Counter seating or takeout only. They also have hamburgers and hot dogs.

The Jake Break Cafe - No sign with the name of the place, but it is the Hwy 45 Truck Stop

The Jake Break Cafe

A truck stop diner on a very busy highway. There isn't a sign stating 'The Jake Break Cafe', but it…read moreis at the Hwy 45 Truck Stop. It has an extensive menu and some of the items sound like they would taste delicious. The chuck wagon steak, sounds great, but tastes pretty rough. It comes with too much gravy, and it is a patty that contains a bunch of fillers, resulting in a "soggy" patty, with strange flavors. The hand cut fries are red skin potatoes, which are an oddity in this area. They aren't douple dipped or cooked long enough, and as a result, come to you limp and the insides are crunchy. The pot roast has a good taste, reminiscent of Kelly, Hormel or Dinty Moore brand can stew. The meat appearance and gravy taste make you wonder, if it is from an industrial-size pre-made dish. The food items we chose were edible, but not worth the drive to make another visit. The only food item that was questionable would be the baked beans. They were prepared with an overpowering maple ingredient, and tasted like a pancake syrup. There were bits of real bacon and ground meat, but you couldn't discern that taste from the maple. I ate them, but it was off putting, and I added pot roast meat to dilute it some. There is no ban on smoking here, and you will have to deal with that smell while dining. There is a table to play dominoes. They have karaoke certain nights. There is an on-site deli that sells a half dozen different sandwich meats. They also offer a long list of desserts. The one menu item I do plan to try, is the cornbread salad, to compare to that of Borroum's. The food quality may not have been what we prefer, but if they post an interesting special, I may return to try it. I do look forward to trying the cornbread salad within a couple weeks. I'm not sure about the name, if it is a play on words, or an honest misspelling (Jake Brakes on semi trucks). To Each Their Own.
