Mississippi native here. I haven't been home in over two years, so I was ecstatic when I stumbled across a photo from October 2016 this morning that had Abe's Grill Signature Seasoning in it. For context, I lived in the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia area) for 10 years, and I always looked forward to my roadtrips home to NW Mississippi during that time, which often included stops in Corinth, Mississippi, Huntsville, Alabama, and Chattanooga, Tennessee, along the U.S. Route 72 corridor. That's when I first discovered Abe's Grill. Abe's Grill is an institution in this stretch of the South, known for its history, hearty diner food, colorful decor, stool lunch counter, and mom and pop vibes. I've only eaten at Abe's for breakfast, and I was so impressed with the food and customer service that I bought their signature seasoning mix, which I used pretty frequently when I lived in DC. Considering this review is based on a 10-year old photo, I did do some additional research to ensure the restaurant has survived the test of time. Amongst others things, a few perks that come along with the job is travel. Sometimes it's a big city with a great night life and sometimes it's a small city with great hole in the wall restaurants. Thank God for the hole in the walls...lol Abe's Grill is a stable in Selmer, TN. Known mostly for their breakfast items and their famous biscuits. After eating there two days in a row I can clearly understand why they're famous. The biscuits were fresh, fluffy, and full of flavor. The staff was friendly and ordering was easy. Very cool local place. I don't think has changed one bit since the 1960s. There are a couple tables outside but think those are for waiting because inside is just a counter constantly fill by new customers. Great eggs and healthy potion of country ham. Gravies-sawmill, red eye and chocolate all good. First time having chocolate gravy and really good as well as pretty sweet. Biscuits were good though I think they are more like dinner roll biscuit blend. Coffee was great. Personality of the workers...priceless read more

Wow! I was in town for a few days. Decided to try this place it for breakfast...it will not be my last time. The service was great, the staff (all family) was friendly and the food was fantastic! Prepare to be AGHAST when you first see Abe's Grill. Look closely at the PICTURES in Yelp of the OUTSIDE and INSIDE of the restaurant. Swivel stools at the counter only -- no inside tables! Now imagine if Jed Clampett bought Fred Sanford's junk dealership, and opened a diner in it. Jethro cooks on the grill, Granny cuts potatoes, and Elly Mae waitresses and wipes the counter. Grampa Jed takes to-go orders at the window. However, the diner serves the best biscuit breakfast and burgers in town, and becomes a state landmark. Also, Elvis Presley and Donald Trump walk in. If this experience sounds good, you've stopped at the right place. If it doesn't appeal to you, consider this a two-star review and keep driving. read more

Old fashioned cooking and some of the very best biscuits. The owner will tell you he's been using the same oven for 49 years. The minute we sat down, the cook was asking how we wanted our eggs and what meats we wanted. This was really helpful because we didn't even need to look at a menu. Abe's Grill is an experience. I drove an hour to get there and it was worth every second. Excellent burgers and fries in an atmosphere that will immediately--and authentically--transport you back to at least the 1960s. The couple who own the place have operated it for 40 years, and basically nothing has changed. She's behind the counter, and he's at the takeout window. Food is served on wax paper--no plates--and drinks are served in mason jars. The walls are literally covered with license plates from every state and several foreign countries. I've been driving by abes for years and finally decided to try it out! Glad We did! The husband wife and son crew serve a great lunch! I had the ribeye sandwich and my wife got a burger and we split some fries and talked with the owners for a bit. Greasy spoon with a great sit at the bar experience. Local flare, sit at the bar and get ready to order faassssst. The customer service was legendary and the short order chef's entertainment was worth double what I paid. If you are used to very flavorful gravy, prepare to be disappointed. An institution that should not be missed. The food is fantastic..not fancy just good , everything from the order to the check needs to be recorded as it is a coordinated effort on the part Abe to his wife (who has cooked the biscuits) to his son that does the magic on the griddle. We get together twice a year in Walnut (6 old guys that worked together forever) and make it a mandatory stop. The place is little in space but makes up for it in "atmosphere" and service that has that lost personal touch in so many places...not here. This doesn't look like much from the outside, or even the inside, really. But I have never seen or felt so much love and community in a restaurant as I felt in this one. Lots of collected items adorn every wall and shelf, but every one seems to have a story behind it. The staff is a father, mother and son who are exceptional at what they do. Abe is the first guy you speak to when taking your order, and we immediately felt like family. The mom makes the best buttery biscuits, and the son is a master at the grill. Blast from the past. Great burgers, fries, fresh hot cookies, and corn dogs! Probably one of the best chocolate chip cookies I've had, definitely the best one I've had at a restaurant!!! We called in a to go order and they were to the point during the lunch rush but super friendly. When we arrived I'm assuming Abe himself served us quickly and super friendly through the window. It looked smaller than the pics but there was a cute porch area with tables and an outdoor seating area. Burgers were the old fashioned, flat and greasy kind like I love. Oh my, great little roadside eatery that you don't want to miss. I don't think you can go wrong with any item on the menu, we had the ribeye sandwich and a cheeseburger with French fries. It was all delicious and we watched it all cook right in front of us. Do not pass on the chocolate chip cookie, warm, gooey, and served straight from the pan. I think breakfast would be awesome and can't wait to get back there again to try it. Abe will greet you when you arrive, his wife will bring your order after their son prepares it. Have you ever walked into a place to eat and been greeted by a waitress with an angry glare so harsh, it made you uneasy about the food and you haven't even sat down yet? Have you ever gotten such a sourpuss, crotchety, lazy-ass waitress that wouldn't come back and refill your drink or ask you if you need anything? Have you had to scoot your empty glass to the teetering edge of the table to catch her eye, in hopes of a refill, just to have her walk by with such gusto the wake behind her sucked your napkin off the table? At that point I'm sure you'd be shaking and rattling the ice, louder and louder until you are drawing angry looks from the other patrons and that just throws you into a daydream thought of walking up to her and grabbing her by the throat and squeezing just hard enough to make her left eye pop out and blood come from one ear, wait! What the hell? Where am I? Who am I? What happened? Sorry, I had flashbacks of so many bad dining experiences. Any way, you will NOT get that from any of the three people working here. They all act like it is the first day of school, happy as hell to see you walk in, committed to keeping you happy as soon as you walk in. Rapid fire questions like "sweet tea?" "Hamburger or cheeseburger?" "Fries for both of you or one large order of fries to share?" "You want a fresh and hot chocolate chip cookie?" Your Drink glass stays topped off. You are hard pressed to find people in the food service industry that maintain an upbeat, positive and happy presence about them after just a year or more in the business. These people have been doing this for decades and they act like it is their hobby, not their job. Now keep in mind that it is a 'greasy spoon' with decades of grease to show for it. There are car tags, family pictures, patron family pictures, autographed pictures of local celebrities, political fellows and such. But, my eyes locked onto one very important picture frame, like a heat-seeking missile, as soon as I walked in....the food service document with a big letter A, which told me they passed their food service inspection. The cheeseburger had two very thin patties of meat and the juices started to flow immediately after I lifted it from the paper it was served on.
