The White Sands Buddhist Center is a Vietnamese Buddhist Center in Mims, FL. The grounds here are beautiful w/ ornate statues throughout yet coming here in the dog days of a Floridian Summer truly takes right effort & equanimity to endure the unforgiving hot humid temperatures. It was 105F w/ humidity which is no joke. Still we enjoyed our walk around the grounds. Unfortunately the visitor center was locked so not sure what programs are available here or the timings of the programs. The main statue of the Buddha featured here sitting upright in the posture of meditation was carved in Vietnam from blocks of granite. Had a height of 35 feet & weight of over 200 tons. It has been at the monastery here since March 2013.

One of the most peaceful and lovely environments to get a breath of fresh air and just be in a state of mindfulness. Great sights as there are all the Buddha's statues around the sight. Flowers and gardens as well as a big pond for views. A gift shop and the temple to learn more about the Buddha practices. It's best to visit early before the sunny heat. Also, they offer meditation sessions on Sunday mornings which are a great experience along with Vietnamese lunch!

The location is very humble in a residential neighborhood located off of state road 46 in Sanford. The ground is mostly grass and unpaved with a large field/parking area. Towards the corner of the area is the actual temple with a huge bodhi tree, offering area with incense, and gilded statue likenesses of the Buddha. I've only been here for social events held during Asian new year and different food festivals. The area has minimal shade, but mostly it's very warm so bring sunglasses and sunblock for daytime events. Bring a folding chair if you plan to sit or a beach towel. The events held here are always cash only, so if your find yourself heading here for food or new year festivities, bring cash. If you don't spend all your money on food or beer, you can usually pick up some nice Lao/Thai cooking instruments or food items to go. Also the temple is always happy to accept donations for the local Monks of cash or food offerings. Be warned, there are only two bathrooms located near the temple area and the lines are long during popular festivals. Enjoy coming here for special events and it's a nice reprieve from the hectic Central Florida lifestyle. Things seem to move slower here and it's a nice place for self reflection...and the occasional serving of papaya salad.

There are interspersed gardens of palms and citrus trees with a small structure toward the east end of the property. Festivities are infrequent but seem to bring devout Thai, Lao, Cambodian practitioners from miles around. We were welcomed to cite our prays inside the temple which was beautifully adorned with offerings and Buddha statues. Buddhist temples are a sacred place for prayer and reflection. All are welcome to practice and pray within. Would like to be here when there is a festival. Please post if anyone knows a date of a celebration.

Most of the booths are food related items such as fried bananas, Fried shrimp fritters, Soups (broth) and boat noodles, also steamed rice cakes. I did not see noodle dishes such as pad thai, pad see ew - The Thai Food Truck was the only one serving full Thailand Menu and it looked quite interesting but I skipped the truck. I will def try it next time since they are the only ones selling full menu. There is a booth selling spices, seasonings for the cooks. I saw a lotus cookie that looked interesting - It reminded me of a fortune cookie batter. They had 1-3 booths selling clothing from Thailand, Souvenirs etc. I did buy the only earrings from Thailand. I was tempted to buy the all brass incense holder but I figure I can get that next time. This is a must go monthly if they open on Sundays. Its free entrance and free parking.
