My boyfriend picked this place out for the night after traveling from Bath, Rye is an awesome…read moremedieval town with cobblestone roads. George in Rye is just amazing! the staff is very wonderful and very accommodating towards their guests. The restaurant is amazing as well, everything we had for dinner and breakfast was so good! The charm and designs of the hotel are everything i love, it home-y and charming and elegant at the same time. I want to come back to Rye just to stay at the George in Rye! and maybe to see more of the town... If you're going to Rye, book a room at the George in Rye, you will NOT be disappointed!

We were keeping our expectations moderate for The George. We'd heard only that the town of Rye was…read morevery cute, or if not that, quaint. Cute and quaint are all well and good but they call to mind slightly dusty hotel rooms stocked with ceramic angels and starving artist landscapes. Luckily for us, there wasn't a ceramic angel to be seen at The George. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that The George is as well-appointed and modern as any hotel my partner and I have ever stayed at anywhere in the world. Our room was spacious (almost ludicrously so, given the compactness of the town) and smartly decorated. The bathroom sports a beaten tin bathtub large enough to wash up a horse, and the shower is a walk-in with a powerful flow rate. The room has facilities for tea and a cafetiere, and the friendly staff will top up either if you're a prodigious drinker. My only quibble with The George is that the food in the restaurant isn't up to the standard of the hotel itself -- but Rye is so tiny that there's no reason why you can't stay at the George and walk down to the excellent Ship Inn or the local chippie for dinner.

This is a really excellent hotel, I had a very relaxing stay here…read more It's right on the sea front, opposite the pier, so my room at the front of the building had a lovely view of the sea, and all along the promendade. The room itself was very comfortable and the bed was fantastic. The decor is simple and modern and everything was spotlessly clean. The bathroom was well thought out, with nice toiletries and a really deep bath, which made for an excellent relaxing soak after I went for a run. There are also a few other nice touches like herbal tea bags, and bottles of water in the little fridge. The owner/manager was really superb, he told me the best route for my run, and sorted out my meals (vegan and wheat free), with no fuss or hassle at all. For dinner, I had roasted veg in a tomato sauce, and for breakfast I had a fruit platter and some porridge. The breakfast isn't buffet style, so everything is prepared fresh, and the fruit was the best I have had in a hotel for a long time, in fact probably ever. Deliciously fresh melon, apple, pear, grape and pineapple. I would definitely stay here again.

We just arrived this morning and are already in love with this hotel. This place is so dog friendly…read moreeven for a 30kg German shepherd. Dogs are allowed everywhere in the hotel including the restaurant! Everyone is dog mad and our dog was told she was beautiful many, many times. Sitting at the bar enjoying a drink, dog gets a bowl of water, this isn't the welcome you normally get. It would've been nice, though, if we were directed to the nearest places out dog could toilet when we checked in. (Overnight) if you are a light sleeper, do not take one of the rooms facing the seafront in summer. The road is used constantly and with the windows open it makes it difficult to sleep, but the view is worth it for those of us who are willing to make the sacrifice. As an older hotel, the walls are thin and you can hear people stomping in the corridor. The tea/coffee set to is good, includes bottled water. The bathroom small but functional although it did take me awhile to figure out his to turn the shower on. I would still come back here again.

The chicken supreme with sauteed potatoes was actually a chicken cutlet served with gravy and sliced roasted potatoes (looked like the sad leftovers of a Sunday roast, certainly not chicken supreme.) The tortellini was lukewarm and tasteless. But the chicken dish was salty to the point of being completely inedible. When we complained, the young man at the bar said, "Well, what do you expect me to do?" When we asked for a refund (just for the chicken dish, upon reflection we should have asked for the entire miserable experience to be refunded), it was very grudgingly given. Even then he didn't ask for our card details or anything, then finally he admitted that he had made a mistake and that wasn't how you put refunds through. No apology, no explanation, no concept of customer service. Dirty tables, a long wait, and overpriced, cold, inedible food. Spend your money somewhere else.

This is about an hour from Sandwich, where we live, so too far to drive for dinner. The room at The George was comfortable and full of character and the service friendly, prompt and helpful. On one of the two nights, we ate in the hotel restaurant and were VERY pleasantly surprised. Excellent menu, beautifully cooked and presented and a good wine list. A good reason to go to Cranleigh in itself! Judi and I intend to return in the not too distant future - we deserve a treat (and even if we don't we're still going!)
