The old town of Rye is charming and picturesque. And right in the middle, on the High Street, is The George Hotel. It's a beautifully renovated town house. There is a restaurant, that serves good, locally sourced food, and a pub, with a large open fire and massive selection of ales and beers and wines. There is also a ballroom/banqueting hall for wedding receptions and New Years Eve's parties.
The basic double rooms are quaint and cosy, with good size beds and exposed beams and painted paneling. There are several signature suites, some with four poster beds and roll top baths. All rooms come with lavender filler, knitted hearts on the pillows (which can be purchased) and wooded chests, filled with a selection of fine teas.
Breakfast is served in a slightly sterile restaurant, which is a bit too much like a canteen. The pub is a much better location for a meal, and the restaurant allowed us to order, and then be seated in the pub at a huge wooden table by the open fire.
The worst thing about The George is that some of the staff are rather young and inexperienced. There was a slight mix up with our room requests, and what was a simple error was treated like a major oversight and took way too long to remedy. But they are are all lovely people, and everything was sorted out in the end. read more
