We were on the back patio area which was fine, nice ambiance, you order at the bar. Nice selection of local ales and beers, and some wines. We ordered the mozzarella salad with fresh tomatoes, Chicken salad and fish. Everyone was very pleased with their selections. The mozzarella was tasty as were the ripe tomatoes with balsamic, the fish was fresh caught, and the chicken salad with cashew was wonderful. Im really glad this historic venue was such a good experience and didn't just rely on its history and not its food.

What a jovial character he was, even carried our cases. A gem. Shown to our 4 poster bedded room was an experience on its own. The woodwork in this building was outstanding as was the bric-a-brac all around. Wonderful room once you got used to the fact that the floors are not level. Standing up, initially, was difficult and that was without a drink. Which led us to going back down to the bar for a snifter. Here I discovered a new vodka to me, Mermaid Salt Vodka. Thought I'd try it and it was 'unusual' as it left a very slight salt water taste on the tongue after a while. Before dinner I decided to have another. The dining room was a sight to behold. Wonderful white linen and a beautiful plate as a setting. Obviously a pre-empt to a wonderful meal following. And it was. Starters of scorched local mackerel and cod brandade fishcakes. Thank goodness there wasn't a rush as they were delicious. Main meal of shared rack of blackface lamb, wonderfully pink and not over cooked. Couldn't finish the whole rack but we did give it a go. All helped down with a bottle of Lychgate Bacchus from the Bolney Estate. I finished with a selection of British cheeses and a port. Now ready for a good night sleep if the ghosts of this establishment allowed it. Yes, it is haunted. My partner was sure she saw someone while in the bar and heard footsteps during the night. Breakfast was, as dinner, superb. All local produce which, to me, is important. Service throughout our stay was second to none. A wonderful overnight stay and a thank you to all staff.

George in Rye is just amazing! the staff is very wonderful and very accommodating towards their guests. The restaurant is amazing as well, everything we had for dinner and breakfast was so good! The charm and designs of the hotel are everything i love, it home-y and charming and elegant at the same time. I want to come back to Rye just to stay at the George in Rye! and maybe to see more of the town... If you're going to Rye, book a room at the George in Rye, you will NOT be disappointed!

Cute and quaint are all well and good but they call to mind slightly dusty hotel rooms stocked with ceramic angels and starving artist landscapes. Luckily for us, there wasn't a ceramic angel to be seen at The George. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that The George is as well-appointed and modern as any hotel my partner and I have ever stayed at anywhere in the world. Our room was spacious (almost ludicrously so, given the compactness of the town) and smartly decorated. The bathroom sports a beaten tin bathtub large enough to wash up a horse, and the shower is a walk-in with a powerful flow rate. The room has facilities for tea and a cafetiere, and the friendly staff will top up either if you're a prodigious drinker. My only quibble with The George is that the food in the restaurant isn't up to the standard of the hotel itself -- but Rye is so tiny that there's no reason why you can't stay at the George and walk down to the excellent Ship Inn or the local chippie for dinner.

I want a cool, dark and quiet room in which to sleep; I want cool, crisp sheets and large heated towels after my shower. In short, when I am on the road, I want to feel like I am (almost) at home. Very very few hotels and B and B's have even come close to that distinction. Jeakes I am pleased to report, beats them all This guest house is just about perfect. The location is simply stunning - look up Mermaid Street, Rye. Steep cobbled street. The welcome is simple and sincere. Jeakes consists of 3 adjoining houses run together. Our room , "The Apothecary" was very quiet, and the drapes blocked out all daylight (gets light at 0330 right now!) The shower was strong and the bathroom well appointed. The English breakfast was simply outstanding. Jenny and Richard make you feel so welcome. The "honesty" bar/library is a welcome place to stop by on your way to bed. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Great sleep, great breakfast, great overall feeling. And what a location! Simply stunning.
