I'll explain why and try to be concise. The cuisine is exceptional. There's a good selection of quality drinks. The service is excellent. The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming -- the sort of place where complete strangers tend to strike-up conversation. The location is perfect, overlooking the Village Green, with a big beer garden behind, and a vast playing field behind that. It's a lovely village, nestled in the gently-undulating farming landscape of rural north-east Herts -- no wonder Braughing was recently awarded the prestigious "Village of the Year" accolade. The pub's menu always includes the best of local produce, from locally-reared beef to local pork sausages, alongside popular country pub dishes. (Braughing village is famous for, among other things, the delicious local sausages, and this is a good place to sample them.) Did I mention the pies? A different pie every day it seems, and you won't find better pies than these. I don't make a statement like that lightly.

First thing you note is that ALL the character of the place has been removed by replacing original pub sign etc has been replaced with generic, plain white lettering on a maroon backdrop plastic looking signs. Second they seem to have changed it from a pub (translation for my US buddies - bar) to a very ordinary restaurant. The food was DREADFUL. Normally I would have rammed it down the waitresses throat but with family around I swallowed it (my anger not the food). I ordered bangers and mash - Surely no-one can make a dry nasty English banger?! Oh these guys can - and the nasty luke warm gravy crap? And the sausages were basically burnt so much that I thought my teeth would crack when I TRIED to eat one. My uncle barely touched his chicken dish it was so bad - my Dad (the human vacuum) ate his fish and chips but it didn't look good. The girls meals were totally not memorable in any good way. Never again.

They don't do a childrens menu but the portions are so big that normally my son would just share with me. They also have a big disabled bathroom with babychanging. I think from all eaty places in Letchworth this is the one you should visit as it is a truely lovely place. Just make sure to book if you need a babyseat.

There is a reasonable ca park as it gets quite hard to park in the summer. I have visited for lunch and dinner and both were very nicely presented and well cooked. The skate is very tasty and the scampi and Jenga chips are good. The costs can be a little bit higher for lunch but the menu is very similar and therefore for dinner, I thought it was quite reasonable. Peter who used to be at another Billericay restaurant is the restaurant manager and as normal makes sure we get well looked after.

We got stumbling distance to one of the best pubs in the country. This place is well-regarded by everyone in the region. I've met people here who give up walking distance to their local to drive here and have a good time. That says something. My first night here I made friends, and each time I've been here since I find myself in good company either with neighbors we've met before, or people who know we're new to the area and want to welcome us. I can't begin to tell you how often a quick pint before dinner turns into a long session at King's Arms. I wouldn't have it any other way. These guys truly embrace the concept of being the center of village activity. No TVs, no WiFi, these things distract from the community. You come here to interact with your friends and neighbors, enjoy a good beer, and enjoy living in the company of others. They regularly have events to bring the village out. The most impressive of which was the dinner they hosted on the night of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. They served the exact 10-course menu served in first class that evening, and requested everyone bust out their tuxedos and dresses to mark the occasion in grand fashion. It was a remarkable evening. One disappointment, since I have to list one to feel as though I am being fair, is the wine list. We love the temperanillo, but really none of the others. But we're not here to drink wine, we're here to be social! It makes me a little sad that we don't have this type of drinking culture in the US. If you're not an alcoholic, you're not likely be on a first-name basis with the bartenders at a local watering hole. That's why I love walking in here; everyone knows everyone else, they're always happy to see you, they know what you drink, they pour a tasty pint, and are genuinely good people. I dig it.

The pub has been around for over 300 years and it wouldn't have lasted 3 years if every experience was as bad as ours. We both love cider, ordered two different ciders - both pretty tasteless, flat and disappointing - we each left 1/2 of our drinks as we walked out of the pub. The food was awful. My wife ordered the lamb chop special and was very clear that the lamb should be well done or at least medium well - NOT pink. Well the two fatty lamb chops arrived sitting on a pile of mashed potatoes. My wife ate part (the least fatty part) of the first which she said was tasteless and cut into the second from which blood poured out (so much for the well done!). After requesting it to be taken from the check (as usual in the UK you pay in advance) we were refunded the ten pounds. I made the mistake of ordering the lamb madras curry which comprised some tasteless chunks of lamb sitting in a reddish sauce which (to me at least) had little similarity to any Indian meal I have ever experienced before. The rice was OK. I left most of it (together with 1/2 of our ciders - my wife's bloody plate had been removed by then) as we left hungry. Again a historic watering hole in Baldock - hopefully the food is usually better than what we experienced today - but we will not be back.
