We got stumbling distance to one of the best pubs in the country. This place is well-regarded by everyone in the region. I've met people here who give up walking distance to their local to drive here and have a good time. That says something. My first night here I made friends, and each time I've been here since I find myself in good company either with neighbors we've met before, or people who know we're new to the area and want to welcome us. I can't begin to tell you how often a quick pint before dinner turns into a long session at King's Arms. I wouldn't have it any other way. These guys truly embrace the concept of being the center of village activity. No TVs, no WiFi, these things distract from the community. You come here to interact with your friends and neighbors, enjoy a good beer, and enjoy living in the company of others. They regularly have events to bring the village out. The most impressive of which was the dinner they hosted on the night of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. They served the exact 10-course menu served in first class that evening, and requested everyone bust out their tuxedos and dresses to mark the occasion in grand fashion. It was a remarkable evening. One disappointment, since I have to list one to feel as though I am being fair, is the wine list. We love the temperanillo, but really none of the others. But we're not here to drink wine, we're here to be social! It makes me a little sad that we don't have this type of drinking culture in the US. If you're not an alcoholic, you're not likely be on a first-name basis with the bartenders at a local watering hole. That's why I love walking in here; everyone knows everyone else, they're always happy to see you, they know what you drink, they pour a tasty pint, and are genuinely good people. I dig it.

Unfortunately, the worst food and service I have experienced for many years, to the extent that I would imagine anywhere else, and I mean anywhere else would not be as bad as the Kings Arms. Without going into long-winded detail, expect low budget food, cooked poorly. The roast was truly awful, unless you like microwaved chicken, shoe leather beef and a block of fat pork, complemented by reheated potatoes and Yorkshire. All the meals were in the same vein, either reheated or kept warm.. dried out etc. Combine this with terrible service. There seemed to be plenty of staff about, but we were constantly waiting or asking twice for items, at one point we literally had not one drop of drink in anyone's glasses at all during the meal. The cherry on the cake was visiting the disgusting toilet, loo roll on the floor and pubic hair in the sink. I have been in contact with the manager who is aware of the issues and has said that they will be addressed. I cannot imagine this will be in the short term as there is very little that does not need changing. I have politely declined a partial refund, as much more important to me that other people do not suffer the same experience. One to avoid if looking at options. Wish we had.

The front of the building is the original old rooms which have been knocked through to give a more intimate atmosphere, at the back of the pub is more recent and has a large modern conservatory which is nice, but can be noisier. The pub has decent traditional ales, and the wine list is good. It has about a dozen each of whites and reds, a couple of rose wines from around £12 to £37. There are about eight champagnes from around £18 to £100. Most people don't come here to drink, they come to eat, and the menu is varied with more fish dishes available on Friday. Starters range from around £5 to £7, mains £12 to £17, deserts about £5 to £7. We had homemade fish cakes with Salad and Homemade Tartare Sauce for £6.90 which were excellent and Gravadlax with Smoked Salmon Pate, Toast & Cress Salad which was the same price and tasty, but a little too oily for my taste, it would have benefitted from a good-sized wedge of lemon. We followed this by Roast Aylesbury Duck Breast, Confit Leg with Gratin Potato, Plum & Ginger Compote for £14.95 and Roast Local Rare Breed Lamb with Crushed Jerseys Royals, Marsh Samphire & Tomato: both were excellent and very tasty. We were flagging a little now, so we shared a portion of cheese and biscuits at £6.50: it was nice, but I've had better. Overall the wine and food are excellent and the staff and service are both very good. There is a reasonable sized car park, but as the place gets very busy (so best to book a table) and parking can therefore be a challenge. Highly recommended.

Friendly bar staff. Soft drinks for drivers and kids. Well kept real ales. We've got a good local, but if you haven't, or you're looking for a change, it's a great venue. The special events are near continuous, creating a reason to visit almost every day. Sunday - almost all tables reserved from 6pm in the main eating area. Book to avoid disappointment.

I'll explain why and try to be concise. The cuisine is exceptional. There's a good selection of quality drinks. The service is excellent. The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming -- the sort of place where complete strangers tend to strike-up conversation. The location is perfect, overlooking the Village Green, with a big beer garden behind, and a vast playing field behind that. It's a lovely village, nestled in the gently-undulating farming landscape of rural north-east Herts -- no wonder Braughing was recently awarded the prestigious "Village of the Year" accolade. The pub's menu always includes the best of local produce, from locally-reared beef to local pork sausages, alongside popular country pub dishes. (Braughing village is famous for, among other things, the delicious local sausages, and this is a good place to sample them.) Did I mention the pies? Having been there all these years I always know there would be someone I know well there every time I would go down for a drink. I think this is true with a lot of people that go there. Because of this, there's a great sense of community going on there, but new faces are always welcomed here too. I used to gig here in my younger years as mick and jackie had always been into music and promoting the local music scene. Quiz nights are always great fun and the service there is very quick. A really great place to go to and I think it caters for people who don't exactly feel accustom to gastro pub vibe. It's a very honest place with nice friendly people. This inn/pub has been around for more than 200 years and I'm sure has seen a lot. Got to say, thanks for reminding me what true Fish n' Chips should look and taste like. The Atlantic Cod was outstanding and an excellent portion...no cutting corners here. Service was nice too. Keep it up...I will return, but next time, I'll have to include a few pints!
