A beautiful day for a drive so I picked The Fried Tater Café for a visit. Housed in the old…read moreVersailles/Rockvale Store (built in 1884) and had been empty for the past 40 years, they did a great job renovating. Sat down and Megan brought me a menu while sharing some of the "must haves" here. I ordered the Philly Sirloin steak sandwich (this is not a Philly cheesesteak for all you purists out there) and the Tater Tornado as an appetizer. The Tater Tornado gives you the best of both worlds...potato chips and french fries and they are really good. I sprinkled a little salt on em, dipped in ranch dressing, they are addicting!!! This steak sandwich is solid! The steak had some nice grill char, great flavor, and is very tender. The veggies caramelized while the smoked gouda cheese is a really nice touch. Even the "side" of cole slaw was very good, fresh, and crunchy. While I was eating Megan brought some fried pies to a table and they smelled incredible. So I ordered a blueberry one to go and suffered in my SUV the whole way home smelling it. These pies alone are worth the drive out here...absolutely delicious! Without a doubt the best homemade blueberry fried pie I've ever enjoyed. Really great food, nice serene country setting, and friendly service. Well worth the drive out to Rockvale!!!

Their fries (big surprise) and fried chicken are probably my favorite bites that I've tried so far, and portion sizes were generous! For a little place, they've got a menu with a good range of options, and their staff have been very warm, friendly and helpful! If you're in the area and have a hankering for some country cooking or a juicy burger, head on down!

What a great experience…read more The restaurant was spotless, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the food was absolutely delicious. Everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and prepared with care. What impressed me the most was the service. I have years of restaurant management experience, so I tend to notice how a restaurant operates behind the scenes. During our visit, there were only three people running the entire restaurant: a chef, a server who was also acting as the host, and a manager who seemed to be doing everything from food running to bussing tables and helping wherever needed. Despite being short staffed, the quality of service never dropped for a second. Everyone worked together seamlessly, and the entire operation ran surprisingly smoothly. I had a chance to speak with the manager, and I was genuinely impressed by his professionalism, leadership, and positive attitude. Restaurants are lucky to have managers who are willing to lead by example and jump in wherever they're needed. The location is great, the customer service is outstanding, and the food exceeded expectations. It's not easy to maintain this level of quality with such a small team, and they deserve a lot of credit for it. Highly recommended. We'll definitely be back.

When you walk in, you place your order at the counter, grab your number, and find a seat. There's counter seating, several tables inside, or you can head outside where they have a few covered tables. Once seated, they bring your drinks out to you. After we got our drinks, it did take a little while for the food to come out, longer than I expected. Luckily, we had plenty of business to talk about, so the time passed quickly. Then the food arrived, and it was worth the wait! I ordered the Easy Nasty... because that's how I roll! The biscuit was a buttermilk layered-style biscuit, lighter than a traditional Southern biscuit, and it was fantastic. The chicken fingers were lightly battered and cooked perfectly, then topped with cheddar cheese sausage gravy. I added an over-easy egg on top, and breaking that yolk took this dish to a whole new level. Absolutely amazing! We also ordered the Southern Benny, which came with shaved country ham, eggs, and sausage gravy on a biscuit and they loved it. We added a side of cheese grits as well, which were very good. Suggestions, Besides the wait for the food, they were not very attentive to filling your drinks. Also, If you had water they had a self serve station, but it was a disaster. While we were there we watched one kid drop his whole cup of water on the floor, and several adults not turning off the nozzle and let it run. It would be better to have one person stroll the restaurant with a water pitcher. Overall, the food was excellent. If you're in a hurry, this may not be the place to stop, but if you're south of Franklin and looking for a great breakfast spot, this is definitely worth checking out.

After my experience, I think the statements are a bit exaggerated, although I do give it high marks. The name Grindstone cowboy is a nice play on words. First, they are a coffeeshop with a bar and deli type items, so grindstone fits well with the title. Grindstone Cowboy is a nice play on Rhinestone Cowboy, the song by Glen Campbell in the 1970s. The western feel of the restaurant complements the name. There is also a vintage store attached to the restaurant/bar for those who happen to like a little shopping with their meal. I had the BLT and she had the chicken salad sandwich. I will say I am not a huge fan of chicken salad, but I could eat this one (would not be tops on my list, but I could do it). The BLT was very nice. I added avocado and don't regret that decision. I thought the bread and bacon choice was on point. A heirloom tomato would have popped this up another notch. Overall, enjoyed it. I do feel the pricing is a bit high for a small town diner. Perhaps it is as popular as the social media post suggested? I did pay in cash to avoid the 4% credit card fee. Would I return? I would not go out of my way to get back here, but if I was passing through, I would certainly consider another go if I was in the mood for a sandwich.
